GLIMPSING THE GLOBAL FUTURE: KICKING OFF THE 69TH BERLINALE AND OUR TOP THREE PICKS

GLIMPSING THE GLOBAL FUTURE: KICKING OFF THE 69TH BERLINALE AND OUR TOP THREE PICKS

Globalization, remote locations, and family histories – the 69th Berlinale has much more to offer than just the hype. So you don’t miss out on anything between 07.02 and 17.02.2019, here are some of our highlights: In his documentary “2040,” Australian director Damon Gameau searches for answers to an impending climate catastrophe and finds inspiring solutions in unexpected places. The episodic drama “Hellhole” by Bas Devos links individuals with captivating visions of the future: Brussels, the center of a crumbling EU, is the lonely setting for the fates of Italian translator Alba, Flemish doctor Wannes and Moroccan refugee Mehdi. In the long-awaited documentary “Berlin Bouncer,” David Dietl paints a portrait of the capital city’s unique club culture and the global fascination with the three men who shaped it – bouncers Frank Künster, Smiley Baldwin and Sven Marquardt. The Berlinale 2019 gives us an exciting glimpse into the future – grab your tickets now and take a look. This evening’s Q&A will focus on the work of three innovative names in the Berlin food space who have consistently been crossing cultures, setting trends, and defying expectations. First, we’ll be hearing from Hermann’s co-founder, Laura Jasper, on how her restaurant uses sustainable ingredients in unexpectedly satisfying ways. Then, My Linh Phan, mastermind behind Southeast Asian brunch haunt YaMe NumNums, will speak on how her Laotian mother inspired her creative cooking. Last, we’ll hear from Thanos Petalotis and Kolja Orzeszko of Brot ist Gold on the challenges of locally and sustainably creating their delectable sourdough breads. The night won’t be one to miss! 100 YEARS BAUHAUS: EXPERIMENTAL FESTIVAL KICKS OFF AT ADK

100 YEARS BAUHAUS: EXPERIMENTAL FESTIVAL KICKS OFF AT ADK

2019 will be marked by functional design and modern architecture: the famous Bauhaus was founded precisely 100 years ago and seems to be more present than ever, not only in Germany but all over the world. Under the motto “Rethink the World,” the Bauhaus Association 2019 is honoring the centenary with a year’s worth of cultural events, kicking it all off with the opening festival at the Akademie der Künste from 16.01 to 24.01. Apart from its focus on architecture, it also offers a rich experimental program on the thresholds between art, film, dance, and music. The virtual reality installation “Das Totale Tanz Theater 360°” blurs the lines between body and space, questioning the relationship between man and machine in true Bauhaus manier. Exclusively for the concert series “Signalraum: Unikate,” artists developed their own musical instruments. Annette Krebs creates electro-acoustic assemblages, while the performance by director Horst Konietzny and experimental musician Marek Choloniewski transforms brain waves into soundscapes. In the final presentation of the workshop “Bauhaus and Me” on 21.01, dance artist and choreographer Jo Parkes with students from Bertolt-Brecht-Oberschule explore the impact that the Bauhaus might have on the lives of young Berliners today. The Bauhaus continues to be a source of inspiration and now you can join in on the celebrations. Check the festival website for the complete program and ticket information.
