MEDITERRANEAN SPECIALITIES, COFFEE AND ICE CREAM-FILLED FRUIT — KIOSK SARDELLE RECOMMENDED BY JOHANNA DUMET

MEDITERRANEAN SPECIALITIES, COFFEE AND ICE CREAM-FILLED FRUIT — KIOSK SARDELLE RECOMMENDED BY JOHANNA DUMET

It’s already won the hearts of many Weddingers: Kiosk Sardelle, the little yellow and gray Kiez shop on Kiautschoustrasse that sells a well-chosen assortment of groceries and gifts. On top of that, it’s also a cafe serving coffee, cold drinks and even ice cream served in fruit shells! Owners Miriam and Lioba opened the space in February 2022 and offer around 120 products, most sourced from Southern Europe but also closer to home. Some actually come from Wedding, including the Kawa coffee, handmade sketchbooks from Sara Bellinghausen (Hand & Wort) and Caracciolo wine from a maker who lives just around the corner. My top five products? The Espinaler vermouth, the anchovies and olives from Spain, the mandarin chocolate from Italy, the Torres truffle chips from Spain and the Sola Fuet Espetec salami.

The abundance of Spanish products is down to the fact that Lioba and Miriam both lived in Barcelona, where I met Lioba in 2010. I remember our wild nights drinking homemade vermouth on the Rambla de Raval and meeting for breakfast bocadillos before heading to the beach. The duo’s shop sells bocadillos made with fresh bread from neighboring bakery Hansis Brot and offers wine and vermouth tasting. You can also pick up a picnic hamper filled with drinks and snacks and take it to the canal or to Plotzensee (a 15 minute walk away). I can only recommend you to go and check out the shop – don’t forget to say hi to Miriam and Lioba from me!

ICE CREAM SHOP FOR SCOOPS, SWIRLS AND INDULGENT TOPPINGS — KORO CHUNKS RECOMMENDED BY SABINE SCHEIDEMANN

ICE CREAM SHOP FOR SCOOPS, SWIRLS AND INDULGENT TOPPINGS — KORO CHUNKS RECOMMENDED BY SABINE SCHEIDEMANN

Good news: Koro Chunks, the ice cream with oh-so-indulgent toppings, has arrived in Wedding. You can find the shop just around the corner from the AI Campus where sunny benches await you outside. You can enjoy up to ten delicious ice cream flavors made from either Vly plant milk or regional organic milk. Flavors include Salty Caramel Cake, Cinnamon Pecan Bun, Ruby Strawberry Froyo and Peanut Pretzel Munchies. And then there’s “Vegan Mystery”, which I can only advise you to taste. Despite the purist, natural décor of the shop, ice cream remains at the forefront: a gelato counter, cones, cups and wooden spoons complete the look. In winter, owner Jonas plans to expand the range with cakes and Koro organic products, with coffee already available. So what are you waiting for? If it’s the calories you’re worried about, you can just burn them off with a run at Nordpark afterwards…

FISH KLUB SUMMER RESIDENCY: POP-UP RESTAURANT FOR FRESHLY CAUGHT FISH AND SEAFOOD — RECOMMENDED BY INES SPICKER

FISH KLUB SUMMER RESIDENCY: POP-UP RESTAURANT FOR FRESHLY CAUGHT FISH AND SEAFOOD — RECOMMENDED BY INES SPICKER

We say “Fish” – you say “Klub”! Time to head to Manitiusstraße 23 in Neukölln, where you’ll find the Fish Klub Summer Residency, a temporary restaurant serving seafood dishes with names that instantly evoke the French good life: “Fine de Claire”, “Claire de Jade”, “Odette”. Fish Klub managers Margaux Friocourt and Yves Marie Origlia place special emphasis on sustainable fish imports, buying only products caught using techniques that respect the marine environment like fishing with traps or by hand. This dedication to their products is palpable as soon as you enter the pop-up restaurant. The interior is not kitschy or overdone, but informal and honest: neon lights light up large wooden tables with iron frames. This layout means you can easily make friends with your tablemates should you want to, while the atmosphere has something of the riviera about it. After a glass or two of Cremant (or a bottle of white) good vibes are all but guaranteed and strangers will become seaside soulmates.

The menu is inspired from cuisines stretching from Japan to France and Mexico. An absolute highlight is “36h§“, a slow-cooked hamachi from Japan that melts in your mouth, with roasted flavors that have to be tasted to be believed. If you’re unsure what to pick, the welcoming waiters will gladly make a personalized menu for you including wine selections. In addition to importing for the restaurant trade, Fish Klub also sells fish and seafood for cooking at home, with a regularly changing selection according to season and the catch. Drop by their stand at Markthalle Neun for fish, seafood, oysters and a bottle to go with it. For the full sensory experience, however, a visit to the restaurant on Manitiusstraße is a must – it’s open Wednesday to Saturday until 16.07.2022, with the Saturday lunch a particular highlight.

CAR PARK PARTIES, HOLD MUSIC AND ALBUMS ON CASSETTE: BEATBUDE IN NEUKÖLLN — RECOMMENDED BY CAINELLIKLASKA

CAR PARK PARTIES, HOLD MUSIC AND ALBUMS ON CASSETTE: BEATBUDE IN NEUKÖLLN — RECOMMENDED BY CAINELLIKLASKA

“Hello and welcome to hold music vol. 2” says the female voice at the end of the telephone line. What follows is electronic music – more specifically the latest release from Beatbude: “Hold Music Vol. 2. – music on hold available on 12″ and tape”. If you want to hear it, dial 030 577 13 001 (listen to the whole thing and you can leave a message). This fun idea comes from the middle of Neukölln, where Beatbude is located on the first floor of a building on Weserstraße. Based out of their home there, Charlotte Kehl and Juri Bader spend their days putting out new releases, working on their own projects and running the labels Tax Free and AVA. Records. When the pair are not doing that they’re shipping vinyl, CDs, tapes, magazines and mousepads around the world. The boxes are stored in the basement, the singles under the bed, the trolleys to shift it all outside. Delivery drivers who expect loading ramps, forklifts and pallets to assist their large deliveries are in for a shock when they turn their articulated trucks into the duo’s bike-friendly street.

Beatbude is many things: label, distributor, shop, organizer, studio and rehearsal room. The 90 sqm space is home to a sewing machine in the studio and drums in the bedroom. Customers picking up their orders in person are treated to a coffee and the chance to buy products that are officially sold out. Some of the cassette releases are made in such small numbers that you have to pick them up from car boot sales or from the shop directly. It’s worth checking out Beatbude’s Bandcamp, their meticulously-kept archive (est 2007) and their Instagram, where you’ll find announcements for upcoming events, often at short notice.

Cainelliklaska is the moniker of architects Philipp Burst and Paul Schleith. The pair transform existing buildings, design furniture objects and produce artworks.

Beatbude – you can arrange a visit by appointment.

On Saturday, 25.06.22 there will be a car boot sale at Dieselstr.37 in Neukölln from 17h followed by a concert and music on Ziegrastr.11 from 20h. More info here. On 16.09.2022 Garagen Uwe’s debut album “Low Lights” will be released by Beatbude on vinyl and cassette.

ICE CREAM THAT WON’T MELT: COOLING CHOCOLATE TREATS FROM HOKEY POKEY — RECOMMENDED BY MARCUS STEINBERG

ICE CREAM THAT WON’T MELT: COOLING CHOCOLATE TREATS FROM HOKEY POKEY — RECOMMENDED BY MARCUS STEINBERG

Vegan chocolate ice cream has been making waves: in the past few years almost every ice cream maker has added it to their lineup. When done right, it really can be fantastic, and it’s the ingredients that make the difference between so-so and truly tasty versions. Many producers mix together water, sugar and cocoa powder, which is easy and vegan but not necessarily mind blowing. Niko Robert at Hokey Pokey does things a bit differently: he doesn’t add cocoa powder, but instead uses chocolate from Valrhona, Domori and Holger In’t Veld – brands typically used in high-end restaurants. The vegan treat that results is an explosion of flavor: just like great espresso, you can taste the cocoa beans in the ice cream. The fat that normally comes from cream comes from the natural fat content of the chocolate in this recipe. The ice cream has even more chocolate content (one-third) than the traditional, non-vegan variety. This give it a unique quality: it doesn’t melt, turning instead into a delicious chocolate mousse.
