HULA HOOP ONLINE COURSES WITH MAMA ULITA FOR MINDFULNESS, CORE FITNESS AND FEMALE EMPOWERMENT — RECOMMENDED BY SHARON WELZEL

HULA HOOP ONLINE COURSES WITH MAMA ULITA FOR MINDFULNESS, CORE FITNESS AND FEMALE EMPOWERMENT — RECOMMENDED BY SHARON WELZEL

With more of us spending our days at home, it’s a great time to experiment with new forms of exercise. Enter the humble hula hoop. Usually considered an outdoor activity, hula-hooping is now flourishing in living rooms all over. Offering a taste of this trend are the hula hoop online courses run by Ulrike Biller aka Mama Ulita. Usually the Leipzig-based artist teaches hula hoop techniques at events and small training sessions, but with the pandemic she has shifted everything to Zoom – and it’s an amazingly fun place to practice! It is clear that Mama Ulita usually tours internationally as a burlesque dancer from her sensational energy: she is a great entertainer, extremely authentic and takes care of her students, giving plenty of devotion.

All you need to take part is three square meters of space around you, good lighting and a solid internet connection. Ulrike’s aim in her courses is not just to teach technique, but to work the body’s core and encourage mindfulness in a way that empowers women. The online hula hoop sessions are for all – from beginners to pros – and there is no pressure or expectations. I have already completed one course and am already looking forward to what’s next. At the start I could barely hold the ring up, but now I can already do a few little tricks and, most importantly, I’ve learned something new. Tip: It’s best to get a ring before the course and practice holding it up. Your hips will thank you!

DUMPLINGS UND NUDELN TO GO: HAN WESTS POP–UP IN KREUZBERG — EMPFOHLEN VON CLAUDIA KATZMARSKI

DUMPLINGS UND NUDELN TO GO: HAN WESTS POP–UP IN KREUZBERG — EMPFOHLEN VON CLAUDIA KATZMARSKI

Let us help you through the cold gray weather with a steaming portion of Sichuan noodles. An offshoot of Neukölln’s Han West – aka “the home of dumplings” – a new noodle pop-up on Görlitzer Straße is now bringing handmade noodles and yummie dumpling creations to the streets of Kreuzberg. Creative fillings and toppings like Thai chicken & herbs and Sichuan garlic aubergine will delight any lover of Asian cuisine, and there are many vegan options, too. The sister Imbiss in Schillerkiez, which opened in 2019, is well known for its modern take on Chinese street food and is a must stop on the way to Tempfelhofer Feld. Founders Valentin and Rui once spent the summer serving their delicious dumplings at nearby festivals, and while these gatherings seem like a distant memory, you can still enjoy their creations in the outdoors: grab a beanie and gloves and take a seat on a bench opposite Görlitzer Park. All dishes from the Han West pop-up are served in biodegradable packaging so you can enjoy them sustainably. (Text: Claudia Katzmarski / Photos: Han West & Max Power)

A lover of travel, vegan cakes and swing dance, Claudia Katzmarski calls Neukölln her home.

HACKER UND PRESTING: BOOKSHOP WHERE MONTMARTRE MEETS CHARLOTTENBURG — RECOMMENDED BY KIKI ALBRECHT

HACKER UND PRESTING: BOOKSHOP WHERE MONTMARTRE MEETS CHARLOTTENBURG — RECOMMENDED BY KIKI ALBRECHT

I always feel a bit like I’m in Paris when I turn into Leonhardtstrasse, with its street-side cafés and old trees. It’s also home to Hacker und Presting, my favorite bookshop. Amidst the store’s stuccoed ceilings and striking coral-red shelves is where the West Berlin bohemian scene meets, as shop owner Julia Hacker’s stories reveal. Like how the small pane of blue glass in the shop window is actually a souvenir from a 1965 Rolling Stones concert. Or how the iconic greyhound in the store’s logo came into being. Besides taking the time to advise you, Julia’s staff have a knack for beautiful things: I often leave the shop not only with some recommended reads, but with some fragrant soap or a handmade ceramic bowl too. Be it fiction, non-fiction, children’s books or English-language literature, there are reading selections for all, and any book you can’t find can be ordered on the web shop or Instagram for easy pickup or delivery – ideal in the current climate. For literature lovers, this is a truly beautiful address out west. (Text: Kiki Albrecht / Photos: Hacker und Presting)

OONA GALLERY CELEBRATES 20 YEARS OF JEWELLERY — RECOMMENDED BY MILENA KALOJANOV

OONA GALLERY CELEBRATES 20 YEARS OF JEWELLERY — RECOMMENDED BY MILENA KALOJANOV

Editor’s note: please check Oona’s Instagram for the latest updates relating to Covid-19.

If you take a stroll through Auguststraße you can’t miss Oona: the jewellery gallery’s windows are amongst the most beautiful in Berlin. For 20 years now, this “Jewellery Universe” has been home to both timeless and contemporary designs, including rings, necklaces and brooches as well as more unorthodox wearable works from German and international artists. Owner Anna Schetelich is focused not on the beautiful or pretty, but rather creative power and craftsmanship. With the motto “It’s not only gold that shines”, Anna and her artists specialize in unusual materials: borosilicate glass gives Christian Metzner’s surreal bubble necklaces an almost cuddly appearance; Benedikt Fischer’s toothed shell shapes turn found objects into art; and Karin Johansson’s acrylic bracelets remind you of the seaside with every jangle. That’s not to forget the earrings and hoops from Marc Monzó, which are so delicate as to “melt” on the skin. This year marks Oona’s twentieth anniversary – the perfect time to get acquainted with these design wonders. (Text: Milena Kalojanov / Photos: Oona Gallery & 한동령 DR Han)

JULES GEISBERG: SPECIALITY COFFEE AND CAKE SERVED IN A HISTORIC POST OFFICE — RECOMMENDED BY LUCIE EON

JULES GEISBERG: SPECIALITY COFFEE AND CAKE SERVED IN A HISTORIC POST OFFICE — RECOMMENDED BY LUCIE EON

After the success of their cafe at Gleisdreieck, Jules opened a new spot – Jules Geisberg – near Schöneberg’s Viktoria-Luise-Platz in September 2020 and what a beautiful space it is to sit in! The building is the former neighborhood post office, above which hangs a life-size statue who seems to wonder where all the postmen have gone. The interior design is minimalist with elegant marble details – a perfect complement to the warmth and friendliness of the team. Funny story: the cafe’s barista crew were actually friends before they started to work there together. They were attracted by a gastro business that cares about its people and the ethics behind the products they offer, including the coffee which comes from the likes of North Star and Vote. If you’re strolling around the area, do yourself a favor and take a moment to savor a piece of their fluffy banana bread, cheesecake – or both – along with one of their gorgeous drip coffees in my fave seat: the cozy corner bench.
