ANOHA: THE CHILDREN’S SPACE AT THE JEWISH MUSEUM — RECOMMENDED BY MARIANNA HILLMER

ANOHA: THE CHILDREN’S SPACE AT THE JEWISH MUSEUM — RECOMMENDED BY MARIANNA HILLMER

Anoha is probably the coolest children’s exhibition in Berlin and dispels any old-fashioned notions you might have about museums. Serving as the youngster’s wing of the Jewish Museum, the space opened in summer 2021 and is a great place for kindergarten and elementary school children to explore, play, run and discover. The focus of the exhibition is the biblical story of Noah’s ark, the huge boat used by Noah to save all the animals from the great flood. The space is home to animals big and small – polar bears, camels, a giraffe whose neck is a slide – as well as rain effects and of course the ark itself. Children are invited to accompany the animal passengers and look after them during the journey before everyone disembarks the vessel together. Through play, children are encouraged to respect the coexistence of humans, animals and nature. The presence of extinct and endangered species like the giant sloth and orangutan draws attention to environmental problems and our role in causing and overcoming them. This playful place is the result of an innovative collaboration: the US firm Olson Kundig was responsible for conceiving the museum, with a special children’s council involved in its future development.

FROM SEOUL, NAGOYA AND TAIPEI TO BERLIN: ASIAN ART BOOKS AT GALLERY AND BOOKSHOP EINBUCH HAUS — RECOMMENDED BY NAYEON KIM

FROM SEOUL, NAGOYA AND TAIPEI TO BERLIN: ASIAN ART BOOKS AT GALLERY AND BOOKSHOP EINBUCH HAUS — RECOMMENDED BY NAYEON KIM

Whenever I visit gallery and bookshop EinBuch Haus I always fall in love with the handcrafted shelves highlighting all the art books and the carefully curated exhibitions. This August, I am particularly looking forward to visiting because of their new exhibition Assemble and mini art book fair Asian Artbook House (both until 28.08.2021). While the usual motto of the space is to present one book at a time, this month director Frau Kim decided to welcome a number of books by artists from four creative platforms in Asia. In the exhibition these books appear like art objects in a group show, while on the other side of the space you find art books waiting to be opened and read by visitors. This is where you will find the “Asian Artbook House”, with 24 rare art books and prints from different locations in Asia. After browsing Frau Kim’s social media channel to view the selections that are making their debut in Berlin, I pre-ordered the books for delivery at home. That said, it is also nice to visit and see the sample books in person and listen to stories about them, which Kim happily provides. Both the gallery and bookshop are friendly and inspiring spaces for art book lovers, collectors, graphic designers and those searching for something different and unique. Whatever your reason for going, you can expect to spend some time at the Pankow venue this August…

HAU REOPENS WITH ERSAN MONDTAG’S JOY OF LIFE — RECOMMENDED BY HARMONY LEVEQUE

HAU REOPENS WITH ERSAN MONDTAG’S JOY OF LIFE — RECOMMENDED BY HARMONY LEVEQUE

Joy of Life – that’s the name of the dance work that is reopening Hebbel am Ufer’s main stage this week, and it’s the perfect message to celebrate the relaunch of Berlin’s performing arts scene. As you approach the doors of HAU 1 on the banks of the Landwehrkanal you can already hear lively music coming from the stage. On show is a dance work from director Ersan Mondtag, who is known for his experimental and interdisciplinary works and has gathered professional dancers, actors and young talents from Berlin’s Kinder Ballett Kompanie for their first choreographic piece together. It is a committed performance which touches on topics such as migration, climate change and how new generations are fighting for their future. The narrative draws on testimonies of Fridays for Future supporters and the tales of young people who have made torturous journeys from Africa to Europe across the Mediterranean.

The dance is in constant evolution with the narrative arc, going from simple, exercise-like, movements to harmonious choreography. The fascinating scenery with a turning stage, video projections, floating background and colorful props transport you to the same limbo as felt by the dancers, leaving you thinking and reflecting on your own beliefs. You don’t have to be a dance lover to feel the emotions conveyed in the performance; it encourages you to ask yourself what brings you joy – and one of the first answers must surely be the theater.

KÖNIGLICHE GARTENAKADEMIE: GARDEN INSPIRATION AND PLANTS TO TAKE HOME — RECOMMENDED BY ANNA THIELE

KÖNIGLICHE GARTENAKADEMIE: GARDEN INSPIRATION AND PLANTS TO TAKE HOME — RECOMMENDED BY ANNA THIELE

When you enter the Königliche Gartenakademie (Royal Garden Academy) in Dahlem, you are immediately whisked away from the city into a wonderful world of plants, flowers and vegetables. From ornamental maples to the most diverse grasses, the displays remind me of the beautiful gardens of England, where casual, natural arrangements are curated with artistic flair. In 1903 the Königliche Gärtnerlehranstalt (Royal Gardeners’ Training School) was established at the site, which since 2008 has been home to garden designers Gabriella Pape and Isabelle Van Groeningen, who inspire with their traditional gardening approach.

During my visit, I immediately felt new ideas for my balcony herb garden begin to blossom, such is the inspiration offered by the Academie and its staff, who elevate the experience with their passion and expertise. Have you heard of heartleaf lettuce, for instance? It’s not just visually striking, but delicious too. Or perhaps the wild vine tomato, whose mini fruits amaze with their intense aromas. And if you don’t want to buy the species, the place is wonderful for the senses and the soul. A must for me: a slice of Black Forest gateau from the onsite café enjoyed in the shade of ancient trees.

POMERANZE: REGIONAL-SEASONAL DELICACIES AND GARDENING SUPPLIES FOR YOUR BALCONY — RECOMMENDED BY JANINA HACKMANN

POMERANZE: REGIONAL-SEASONAL DELICACIES AND GARDENING SUPPLIES FOR YOUR BALCONY — RECOMMENDED BY JANINA HACKMANN

Regional vegetarian dishes, cooked with local and seasonal ingredients driven by the goal of zero waste: that is what Neukölln cafe Pomeranze is all about. Five minutes’ walk from Tempelhofer Feld you will find a coffee bar that is full of delicious treats to go, like sandwiches and daily plates made with vegetables from the PlantAge cooperative and fruit from Berlin allotment gardeners. The accompanying espressos come courtesy of Tempelhof roasters Andraschko. Owners Katharina Herrlich and Marlene Modick also serve up sweeter options too, like the juicy lemon yogurt tart and the vegan apple crumble that have been the talk of the neighborhood for some time. Meanwhile, if you are looking to grow some treats yourself, Pomeranze also offers a range of boutique garden supplies for bringing your balcony and home to life, including special seed varieties and chic ceramic pots and vases by local designers. My tip: order your items online in the web shop for pick up in the cafe. And whilst you are there: grab a grilled cheese sandwich with homemade chutney and a salty chocolate cookie and head down to the Feld for an impromptu picnic!
