LITERARY ENCOUNTERS AT BRECHT’S BRANDENBURG SUMMER HOUSE — RECOMMENDED BY DANIELA PENSOLD

LITERARY ENCOUNTERS AT BRECHT’S BRANDENBURG SUMMER HOUSE — RECOMMENDED BY DANIELA PENSOLD

What better place to discover cultural history than Brandenburg’s picturesque Märkische Schweiz – the backdrop to the Brecht-Weigel-Haus, a museum and memorial dedicated to its former residents, playwright Bertolt Brecht and actor Helene Weigel. The house sits in Buckow, a refuge for Berlin individualists and artists since the 1920s and which for Brecht was the ideal place to live and work. The heritage-listed studio and house was nicknamed the “Iron Villa” because of its striking lattice windows, and sits directly on the shore of the turquoise-blue waters of the Schermützelsee. It was here that Brecht wrote the Buckow Elegies, his last great collection of poems published in 1953, and now visitors can view the sun-filled drawing rooms complete with original furnishings, stroll through the large garden and marvel at famous theater props stored in the garden house, including the cart used in the Berliner Ensemble production of “Mother Courage”. Every third Sunday of the month there is a guided walk where you can learn the complete history of the couple’s summer house. (Text & Photos: Daniela Pensold)

TWO TRICK PONY: HIGH–END BRUNCH IN BERGMANNKIEZ — RECOMMENDED BY KIM BENJAMIN

TWO TRICK PONY: HIGH–END BRUNCH IN BERGMANNKIEZ — RECOMMENDED BY KIM BENJAMIN

Finding an innovative brunch place in Bergmannkiez can be a challenge, so it’s lucky that Two Trick Pony has come to fill this void exceptionally well. Located near Sudstern, this brunch/lunch cafe offers table service, a well-spaced terrace and a menu focused on local products, with bread from AlbatrossWeide Ei eggs, Alte Milch cheese, and coffee from Vote. After moving to Berlin two years ago, owners Jason Starmer and Gary Young founded the cafe in February 2020 and with it have created a space with a comfortable, friendly atmosphere. Menu highlights include the tomato tonnato salad, their full English breakfast, and the three-cheese toasted sandwich (vegan options also available). For smaller bites, there’s lemon drizzle cake and – my favorite – the toasted coconut bread. Those craving something alcoholic can find numerous variations on Aperol Spritz (try the grapefruit prosecco) as well as natural wines from Vinalupa & Vinicultur, which can be enjoyed for weekend afternoon apero. Two Trick Pony has quickly become my new favorite – maybe it will become yours too! (Text: Kim Benjamin / Photos: Comfort Studio for Two Trick Pony)

Kim Benjamin is originally from San Fransico and New York and a born food lover. Now she’s living in Bergmannkiez, a project manager and has a small blog with a friend called Life in A Berlin Minute.

PIQUE–NIQUE FOR GOURMET PICNIC EVENTS — RECOMMENDED BY PHUONG ANH NGUYEN LE

PIQUE–NIQUE FOR GOURMET PICNIC EVENTS — RECOMMENDED BY PHUONG ANH NGUYEN LE

A delicious picnic enjoyed with friends out in the park is surely one of the highlights of summer. Since May 2020, chefs and friends Chelsea Turowsky (from Omiomi) and Mélanie Wehrli have developed a new event series called Pique–nique  that brings a perfectly prepared alfresco meal to a different location every time. Guests can expect a ready-made spread served in the middle of green nature, be it a Berlin park or a Brandenburg garden. The lovingly-arranged menus are newly designed for each picnic, which feature sweet finishing touches like bamboo blankets and floral decorations. At the Hasenheide event I joined we ate freshly-smoked fish, potatoes with vegan tahini mayonnaise, buckwheat urfa pita and baked cauliflower, with refreshing kombucha alongside. If you fancy alcohol, you can also opt for natural wines before enjoying the view over tasty desserts. All this is served on fabulous vintage plates personally collected by Chelsea and Melanie. An open-air feast! (Text: Phuong Anh Nguyen Le / Photos: Gabrielė Mišeikytė)

Phuong Anh Nguyen Le studies Fashion & Business Management and lives in Friedrichshain. She spends her free time capturing moments everywhere with her camera.

Pique–nique: the next alfresco event will be held in September – check out Instagram for the latest announcements. You can also arrange a private picnic for your colleagues or friends.

BRILLENSCHATZ FOR VINTAGE SUNGLASSES — RECOMMENDED BY CEM SARI

BRILLENSCHATZ FOR VINTAGE SUNGLASSES — RECOMMENDED BY CEM SARI

As you enter the industrial courtyard on Potsdamer Straße it’s easy to miss Brillenschatz at first glance. But when you do locate this sunglasses shop, you will discover a treasure trove of shades. The shop is the passion project of Abdullah Demir, who’s been collecting vintage glasses for years. After running a stand on Sundays at the Mauerpark market, Abdullah decided to find a permanent location and opened his place in 2015. Among his collection of eyeglasses, you’ll find extravagant mens and womens frames including custom-made creations and unique pieces from the best fashion designers. Brands including Porsche, Christian Dior, Versace, Casanova, Chanel and Ray-Ban are all represented with exclusive vintage pieces. In 2017 Brillenschatz was named by The New York Times as one of Berlin’s “Five Places to go” though the shop is still very much an insider tip – not least because there is only one place in town with such a collection. Cem Sari, who came to Berlin from Istanbul at a young age, works as a sound engineer and is the owner of Sariton Records.

YUMMY VINTAGE FOR SECOND-HAND FINDS — RECOMMENDED BY ELENA ZURBUCH

YUMMY VINTAGE FOR SECOND-HAND FINDS — RECOMMENDED BY ELENA ZURBUCH

My motto in life is quality over quantity, but when it comes to clothes even second-hand garments are often beyond my student budget. Luckily the founders of  Yummy Vintage Carolina and Aron have heard my call. They opened their Graefekiez second-hand shop in March 2020 and with it provide an oasis of good taste, made even more tranquil by the weekly yoga classes they hold in the store. Carolina selects each garment individually for its style when she sources the clothes and gives absolute priority to material quality. From designer labels to simple well-finished pieces, you can find everything here – even beautiful jewelry! Carolina often adjusts and alters the garments, making them truly unique buys, which best of all are well within even a student’s budget. (Text: Elena Zurbuch / Photos: Savannah van der Niet)

German-Italian Elena Zurbuch grew up in Berlin. She studies film production and wishes the world looked like an Antonioni film.
