HAPPY EASTER WITH HAPPY HENS — REGIONAL EGGS AND CHICKEN SPONSORSHIPS FROM BRANDENBURG’S WEIDE EI

HAPPY EASTER WITH HAPPY HENS — REGIONAL EGGS AND CHICKEN SPONSORSHIPS FROM BRANDENBURG’S WEIDE EI

The eggs from Weide Ei (which translates to “pasture egg”) are not just free-range: on farmer Habel’s land in Falkenhagen, Brandenburg, you will find some of the happiest hens around. The reason is Habel’s self-developed mobile coop, which allows him to move his birds regularly so they have constant access to new grass. The farm’s motto is “For the love of the chicken” and means that the farming methods used go way beyond those used on typical free range, organic farms. In the industry male chicks are considered surplus to requirements and typically slaughtered, but at Falkenhagen they are raised to become adults. As for the hens, they are retained for another 3-4 years after their 12-month laying period so they too get a fuller life. If these are the kind of principles you want to support, you can become part of the Weide Ei community by sponsoring your own chicken. The scheme gives you the right to 144 eggs over 12 months as well as your very own hen which you can name and even visit on a guided tour of the farm.

If 144 eggs is a bit too much for you, you can of course start small by picking a half-dozen at one of several Berlin markets (see below) or at Blomeyer’s Käsem|a Feinekost and online from Archipel. Farmer Habel likes to experiment with the feed his brood is given, with the likes of black cumin added for a particularly intense flavor. With all this care and attention, you can eat (and hunt) your eggs this spring season with a perfectly clear conscience. On that note: have a very Happy Easter if you celebrate it and a wonderful long weekend if you don’t!

ROHN HAIRDRESSERS — TAKING TIME OUT WITH PERSONALIZED AND FRIENDLY SALON SERVICES

ROHN HAIRDRESSERS — TAKING TIME OUT WITH PERSONALIZED AND FRIENDLY SALON SERVICES

If you’re like me and it’s been an embarrassingly long time since you last had your hair cut, do yourself a favor and book an appointment at Rohn hair salon. Located in the heart of Charlottenburg, this luxurious space offers a range of treatments for your hair, from cuts and color to natural and neutral highlights. When you enter the stylish interior, you automatically feel at home and comfortable. What makes Rohn different from other hairdressers is how personal it is: each appointment starts with a sit-down consultation where your stylist really listens to your wants and needs, shares hair do’s and don’ts and suggests the perfect shampoos and conditioners for your hair type.

The salon was founded in 2019 by Sascha Rohn, a trained Sassoon stylist who has created looks for the likes of Rodarte in New York and gives his own master classes. Besides haircare, Rohn also has a private room where you can also have make-up done (Covid-rules permitting), allowing you to go straight from the salon out into the world. My tip: be sure to make time at the end to check out Rohn’s little shop, which stocks AER perfumes, beauty products from Authentic Beauty Concept and ceramics inspired by traditional Japanese design. I know I definitely won’t be waiting so long before my next cut…

BAITO: WEEKLY JOBS NEWSLETTER WITH HANDPICKED OPPORTUNITIES IN NGOS, TECH AND THE CREATIVE SECTOR

BAITO: WEEKLY JOBS NEWSLETTER WITH HANDPICKED OPPORTUNITIES IN NGOS, TECH AND THE CREATIVE SECTOR

They say if you choose a job you love, you’ll never have to work a day in your life. The jury is still out on that, but if you are looking for a career that offers a little more meaning, the job newsletters from Baito might be a good place to start. Unlike most job services where you find yourself trawling through dozens of pages of ads, these Berlin-made weekly emails organize the jobs according to six understandable themes, such as “develop”, “create” nd “communicate”. The listings are handpicked and cover all sorts of employers and roles, although jobs in tech, NGOs, social organizations and startups are particularly well represented. When you subscribe you can check the categories that interest you so the listings that land in your inbox are more relevant.

Baito (a Japanese word for “work”) was launched at the beginning of 2021 by Berlin-based brothers, artist Max Ernst Stockburger and software developer Lukas, who set out to share the kind of jobs we should probably all be doing: high on social value, satisfying, and fairly paid. The pair pick out around 20 jobs a day, scrolling manually through online advertisements and prioritizing smaller, local employers for their picks. Besides jobs, the thoughtfully-designed emails also feature articles from online lifestyle magazine Draussen, which Max also runs. Can’t wait a whole week for your dream career to land? You can also sign up for the team’s daily job alerts via Telegram. Done like this, looking for a job is – dare we say – fun!

FLUXMUSIC — 40 BERLIN-CURATED STREAMS FOR GENRE-BASED HOME OFFICE LISTENING

Comfy chair? Check. Good coffee? Check. But what about the music? When it comes to working from home, you want a soundtrack that will keep you upbeat and on the ball until you clock off. Enter FluxMusic, the streaming app from local indie radio station FluxFM that offers a welcome break from your usual workday playlists. The service has 40 themed channels streaming 24/7 music that is curated not by cloud-based algorithms but Berlin-based humans. For the ideal accompaniment to your weekday there are stations for every genre from reggae right through to techno, and once you are done working you can tune into themed streams like “Yoga Sounds” for your time on the mat and house party tunes from “Clubsandwich”. And the good news is you won’t have to reach for your wallet to get this ad-free music since the app is totally free to download. You might never want to leave your home office again…

MAMA MUUN: FOOD DELIVERY SERVICE WITH WELL-BALANCED MEALS FOR NEW MOTHERS AND CONSCIOUS EATERS

MAMA MUUN: FOOD DELIVERY SERVICE WITH WELL-BALANCED MEALS FOR NEW MOTHERS AND CONSCIOUS EATERS

Our bodies are in a constant stage of change, and they need our attention now more than ever. This is what led Mama Muun founders Shanay and Tabea to develop their range of homemade, balanced meals that are hand-delivered to your door. The menus are specifically formulated for new mothers’ needs, but you don’t need to be a mummy to try them – they are perfect for anyone who wants a healthier diet without spending half the day in the kitchen. And that’s the best bit: the plant-based dishes come ready to eat within ten minutes.

The pair take inspiration from traditional Chinese medicine to create the menus, which come in different varieties with specific energy-boosting benefits. You can buy the meals as a package or mix-and-match your favorites with options for breakfast, lunch and dinner plus snacks in between. Highlights include the talbina barley porridge with cardamom and pistachio to start the day and the “super mama” goji energy treat which is packed full of nutty flavors plus fiber, iron and vitamins. If it’s lunch or dinner you are after, the lemon chickpea wild rice and sweet potato lentil shepherd’s pie are as satisfying as they are nutritious. Whether you’re a new mummy or simply want a healthy alternative to the daily stress of home cooking, the meals offer the perfect body boost. The pair are launching their spring menu in April – we can’t wait to taste it!
