EASIP — ALCOHOL-FREE BOTANICAL DISTILLATES MADE IN BERLIN FOR FINE COCKTAILS

EASIP — ALCOHOL-FREE BOTANICAL DISTILLATES MADE IN BERLIN FOR FINE COCKTAILS

In many circles it is becoming more and more common to drink little or no alcohol – something we gladly welcome. But alcohol-free alternatives are often too sweet or carbonated, missing the sharp, refreshing taste of spirits. The alcohol-free distillates from Easip Drinks are a new option made from natural essences without any artificial flavors or added sugar. The team behind the Berlin-based brand – Milan Eßer, Alexander Meister and Nicolas van de Sandt – are all passionate about zero percent drinks, and have carefully developed their two varieties, Woods and Fields, which have all the complex notes you get with spirits. Woods reminds you of a grounding walk in the forest, with earthy-sweet notes of beetroot and roasted malt combined with cinnamon and oak – perfect for autumn and winter. Fields meanwhile is the ideal companion for spring and summer, combining thyme, ginger, coriander and cucumber for a herbal, spicy, fresh flavor ideal for a Fields Tonic. Whichever you pick, expect an aromatic journey perfect for your next cozy evening at home.

DADDY MAGAZINE: BERLIN ZINE FOR UNTOLD STORIES AND CRITICAL PERSPECTIVES

DADDY MAGAZINE: BERLIN ZINE FOR UNTOLD STORIES AND CRITICAL PERSPECTIVES

How can writers use the isolation of lockdown to make something new? For Berlin-based online publication Daddy, the answer was to go all out with their first ever print magazine issue, Together. Behind the zine are co-founders Kemi Fatoba(also of Vogue Germany) and Joe von Hutch, who since 2016 have been elevating underrepresented voices both in Berlin and beyond with topical stories on culture, identity and race. Now you can read this journalism in print with 130 thoughtfully-designed matte pages of interviews, fictional works, photo spreads and poetry putting the perspectives of people of color and queer persons front and center. Story-wise, this zine has it all: a profile on fierce local ballroom collective House of Saint Laurent, a reflective article on being Black and British in Berlin, and an exposé on the racist nature of facial recognition technology to name just a few of the articles. Despite the breadth of topics covered, the magazine is still cohesive, with ideas of community, solidarity and intimacy coming up again and again. And while the tone is always critical, the stories leave you with a sense of optimism for the future – something we could all do with right now.

BERLINER ZAUBERKRAUT — SUSTAINABLE PLANT-BASED PRODUCTS FOR GREEN HOME CLEANING

BERLINER ZAUBERKRAUT — SUSTAINABLE PLANT-BASED PRODUCTS FOR GREEN HOME CLEANING

While cleaning might not be one of your favorite chores, having the right soaps and detergents can really help get things spick and span – something more important now than ever. For keeping things both clean and green, the products from Berliner Zauberkraft are just the answer. Founder Julia Hammond has made it her mission to offer natural, nice-smelling and – crucially – powerful alternatives to conventional cleaning products. A trained designer, Julia is the founder of the Daheim Manufaktur kitchen and event space, and it was there that she began experimenting with vinegar for cleaning. Impressed with her self-fermented vinegar made from organic Brandenburg apples and fruit peel, Julia used it to create her multi-use cleaner, which also contains essential oils and extracts from local “witches” herbs like yarrow, nettle and lime blossom.

Their addition is inspired by medicinal plants which for centuries are thought to have magical powers. In addition to vinegar cleaner, the range also includes plant-derived dish soap and powder, while all the packaging is plastic-free, refillable and an eye-catching addition to any kitchen or bathroom shelf. Getting your home gleaming without the harsh chemicals – all it takes is a little witchcraft. (Text: Nicole Meckel / Photos: Berliner Zauberkraut & Savannah van der Niet)

Berliner Zauberkraut products can be purchased online, via Up and Coming and (Corona-permitting) at pop-up shop Hexenküche.

CHRISTMAS CHARITIES — FOUR BERLIN CAUSES TO SUPPORT THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

CHRISTMAS CHARITIES — FOUR BERLIN CAUSES TO SUPPORT THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

If you want to help a Berlin charity this Christmas but don’t know where to start, allow us to suggest some worthwhile local causes. Each One Teach One (EOTO) is a community-based education and empowerment project for black, African and Afro-diasporic people based in Wedding. You can support EOTO’S work, which includes running a library of African-diasporic literature, by making an online donation. Next up is the LGBT+ refugee accommodation run by Schwulenberatung Berlin, who offer a safe home to gay and trans refugees who face attacks and abuse in shared accommodation. To support these highly vulnerable people you can make an online donation. Although there are numerous services helping Berlin’s homeless community, getting the right help to rough sleepers quickly is still a challenge. Berliner Kältehilfe is a service that coordinates all this support, from emergency accommodation to soup kitchens. The charity even has an app where you can get nearby assistance if you see someone who needs it. The service welcomes donations in the form of clothing or cash. Meanwhile, Berlin-based Amadeu Antonio Stiftung works all over Germany to eliminate racism and hate crime. Named after Amadeu António Kiowa, a young black migrant worker murdered in a racist attack in Eberswalde in 1990, the foundation supports victims of hate crime and funds initiatives to steer young people away from extremism. With your online donation you can choose to support the whole organization or a specific project. Happy donating! (Text: Benji Haughton / Photo: Alex Motoc)
