MIT VERGNÜGEN BOOK — A COLLECTION OF CITY TIPS FOR EVERY OCCASION

MIT VERGNÜGEN BOOK — A COLLECTION OF CITY TIPS FOR EVERY OCCASION

Appropriately bright yellow, the first book from our friends at Mit Vergnügen is subtitled “Berlin für alle Lebenslagen” (Berlin for all situations) and certainly delivers on its promise. After nine years sharing their favorite insider tips and new discoveries with us, the Mit Vergnügen team have now distilled their Berlin knowhow into five chapters – Food, Style, Adventure, Going Out and Going Away – all handily organized by occasion. The book is being released by The Gentle Temper, publisher of lake guide “Take me to the Lakes.” Even if it’s raining and you’re broke, this 332–page city guide has got it covered. The book’s launch this Saturday 30.03.2019 gives you the chance to experience the tips in person with a neighborhood tour from the Mit Vergnügen team that ends at the launch party in Kreuzberg’s Paloma Bar. THE DESIGNER’S GUIDE TO YOUR NEXT VACATION: TRAVEL COLOURS

THE DESIGNER’S GUIDE TO YOUR NEXT VACATION: TRAVEL COLOURS

We met Stefanie Friese at the Berlin Travel Festival 2019 and instantly fell in love with her minimalist travel books. Since 2017, she’s published four on-the-ground guides to chic hideaways in Cape Town, Reykjavík, Palma de Mallorca, and Berlin under the moniker Travel Colours. As self-proclaimed “city guides for design lovers,” the books offer ideal spots to sleep, eat, drink, shop and explore far from the tourist tracks. Find the best farm to table restaurant in Reykjavík and tastiest tapas bar in Palma de Mallorca. Stefanie recounts working with South African photographer and chef Claire Gunn to produce the beautiful Cape Town edition: “she always knew what would happen next in the kitchen and could capture the perfect shot as they did so.” It’s this type of local insight and expertise that is imbued in every guide they produce. Order a copy online or find them around the city at shops like Do You Read Me?! and Paper & Tea. (Text: Michael Rice / Photos: Travel Colours)

MARMOR FÜR ALLE — A COMPENDIUM OF PUBLIC ART IN BERLIN

MARMOR FÜR ALLE — A COMPENDIUM OF PUBLIC ART IN BERLIN

Roaming the streets of Berlin on the lookout for art in public spaces, former gallery owner Jörg Johnen has just released “Marmor für alle” (Marble for Everyone). The title of this new compendium to the city is inspired by an obelisk erected by Braco Dimitrijević in 1979 at the Charlottenburg Palace Gardens. Sculptures that blend into the cityscape are complemented across 280 pages by new, surprising discoveries: sometimes the interventions are subtle, as is the case of Renata Lucas’s floor piece installed at the entrance gate of the KW Institute for Contemporary Art; sometimes they are monumental such as Per Kirkeby’s milestone brick construction, combining history, critical analysis and theoretical discourse. The fresh perspective on the city is so inspiring, it will make you want to instantly interrupt hibernation just to pick up one of those little gingko-shaped leaflets, which Pipilotti Rist lets flutter into the entrance hall of the Swiss Embassy every 12 minutes. Marmor für alle: Zur Kunst im öffentlichen Raum in Berlin, edited by Jörg Johnen, with texts by Jörg Johnen, Jeanette Kunsmann and Clara Blasius

THE BOOK OF THE MOMENT: YOU KNOW YOU WANT THIS — TWELVE STORIES BY KRISTEN ROUPENIAN

THE BOOK OF THE MOMENT: YOU KNOW YOU WANT THIS — TWELVE STORIES BY KRISTEN ROUPENIAN

If there’s one book that everyone’s talking about these days, it’s “You Know You Want This: Cat Person and Other Stories.” In a debut collection of 11 stories over 288 pages, Kristen Roupenian writes the complex lives of contemporary urbanites exploring their friends, their family and, occasionally, their sexual desires. Roupenian, whose titular short story had become a viral internet sensation, really knows how to suck her reader in, even when the encounters described are sometimes unpleasant. If you think these stories aren’t fun to read, you’d be wrong. Luckily for our German readers, Berlin publisher Blumenbar has put out an excellent translation by Nella Beljan – esteemed colleague and former Cee Cee employee – and literary expert Friederike Schilbach. Crack open a copy and enjoy. (Text: Nina Trippel / Photos: Mina Aichhorn & Elisa Roupenian Toha)

The English version is called “You Know You Want This: Cat Person and Other Stories” and published by Gallery/Scout Press. The German translation, titled “Cat Person,” is published by Blumenbar.

RE-NT: COMBAT CLOTHING WASTE WITH AN ON-DEMAND WARDROBE

RE-NT: COMBAT CLOTHING WASTE WITH AN ON-DEMAND WARDROBE

You know the feeling of having nothing to wear, despite a wardrobe full of impulse buys and clothing you haven’t worn in months? Here to put an end to the paradox is Re-nt, a bright new light in Berlin’s sharing economy. Founded in October 2018 with the mission of transforming the fashion industry into one of zero waste (an aim as important as it is ambitious) this outfit rental service offers members curated pre-loved clothing on demand for four, eight or thirty days, lovingly sent in reusable packaging by RePack. With style and fit consultations, pop-up events and a new subscription model launching in March, you’ll be able to rent an ever-changing selection of items via a pay-as-you-go system. We’re feeling optimistic about this initiative’s potential to revolutionize our relationship with what we wear while allowing us to take a stand against the terrible labour conditions, environmental harm and waste generated by the fast fashion industry – all in (sustainable) style. (Text: Anna Dorothea Ker / Photos: Re-nt)
