BINU: KOREA MEETS BERLIN IN THE FORM OF LUXURIOUS FACIAL SOAP

BINU: KOREA MEETS BERLIN IN THE FORM OF LUXURIOUS FACIAL SOAP

There’s something to be said for a simple bar of soap – especially an organic, handmade one. While its liquid counterpart comes in plastic containers that will go on to pollute our oceans in the form of micro particles, the 100% biodegradable facial soaps made by Berlin cosmetics brand Binu come beautifully wrapped in tissue paper, have no synthetic additives and are never tested on animals. Besides doing their part to improve the planet, these vegan soaps actually work. Made from scratch in Korea and inspired by a long tradition of bathing, the cleaning slabs labeled “bamboo”, “calendula” and “charcoal” cleanse, protect and nourish the skin, leaving it feeling refreshed rather than tight. Binu offers a simple online skin test (tested, works!) for those who aren’t sure which soap to best suits their skin. A mini set with three samples also doubles as a travel size kit. Don’t forget to order the face brush too! (Text: Nina Trippel / Photos: Binu)

ZEITREISE IN EIN JAHRZEHNT DER DEKADENZ: GRILL ROYAL

ZEITREISE IN EIN JAHRZEHNT DER DEKADENZ: GRILL ROYAL

Love it or hate it, the cult status of Grill Royal in Berlin’s culinary and celebrity circuits is undeniable. For the ritzy steak house’s 10th birthday, Distanz has published a new coffee table book in German and English which pays tribute to its legacy. The publication features candid photo series showing guests at various stages of their meals (and after) taken by the likes of Maxime Ballesteros and Robert Rieger. Interwoven is a feature on the establishment’s history, a conversation about wine with sommelière Andrea Kauk and co-owner Moritz Estermann, a highly technical tribute to meat and many more juicy tidbits. If you haven’t yet stepped foot inside, we can guarantee that by the time you’re through with this book, your fingers will be itching to dial the reservation line — that’s +49 30 2887 9288. LIGHT & FLAVORFUL GOURMET SNACKING WITH KNALLE POPCORN

LIGHT & FLAVORFUL GOURMET SNACKING WITH KNALLE POPCORN

For your next movie night, desk snack drawer, stocking filler — or any point at which you need a delicious pick-me-up, note the name Knalle, a gourmet “Popkornditorei.” Founded by culinary mavericks Lucie Krautien and André Göbel — who are also behind the café Zuckerstück — Knalle’s popcorn is handmade in Berlin. With flavors ranging from Malabar pepper and sea salt to Thai curry roasted peanut, butter caramel-tahiti-vanilla or even the vegan tonka bean-coconut, it’s hard to settle on just one type. Good thing, then, that a taster pack of all seven varieties is available. Pop by their Friedrichshain store or order online. P.S. We’re offering a €5 discount on all orders over €30 with the code KNUSPERCEECEE at checkout. Happy crunching! (Text: Anna Dorothea Ker / Photos: Knalle)

A NEW GUIDE TO BERLIN’S INDEPENDENT LITERARY HOTSPOTS

A NEW GUIDE TO BERLIN’S INDEPENDENT LITERARY HOTSPOTS

As Germany’s cultural capital, Berlin would be incomplete without its jungle of charming independent bookshops. In October 2018, Argobooks, a local art book publisher, completed a two year long endeavor of cataloguing the top stores in Berlin – 173 of them in total. The Berlin Bookshop Map invites you to re-discover your neighborhood’s haunts. Stop by your local bookstore to pick up a copy of the map, slide into an alcove, and lose yourself in your new favorite novel. There’s Ägyptischer Kulturladen Papyri for Middle Eastern literature, Books People Places for a focus on architecture and urbanism, and Anagramm for a large children’s selection. If you’re seeking further literary discourse, many of Berlin’s shops host lectures, discussions, and classes – think Zabriskie’s “Between Us and Nature” reading club or Pro Qm’s book release readings. The Berlin Bookshop Map makes a delightful addition to any books you gift this holiday season. (Text: Michael Rice / Photos: Martina della Valle, Pro Qm, Pamina Aichhorn)

SUBIN KIM: DELICATE PAINTING ON UPCYCLED VINTAGE SILK SHIRTS

SUBIN KIM: DELICATE PAINTING ON UPCYCLED VINTAGE SILK SHIRTS

Sometimes we come across an artist whose modest presentation of their work belies its great beauty. Such is the case with Subin Kim. The designs she creates in her Kreuzberg apartment are not only a sustainable answer to fast fashion; they’re also really cool. The career that took Kim from her native South Korea to Paris via China could have culminated in her creating an own fashion label. Instead, it was her artistic passion that prevailed. Inspired by antique Asian paintings, her favored medium to embellish with her light brush strokes are loose silk shirts, found while rummaging through flea markets stalls. Her abstract figures in motion — which she perfected in life drawing classes — look just as good on denim. See for yourself at Grus Grus in Wedding or Dandy Horse Berlin, which sells Kim’s blouses, bomber jackets and jeans. The artist also accepts commissions — drop her a line before you consider saying goodbye to your old silk tops. (Text: Jasmin Tomschi / Photos: Subin Kim & Raphael Ganahl)
