CEE CEE LESSONS #3: WOOD — BEHIND THE SCENES

CEE CEE LESSONS #3: WOOD — BEHIND THE SCENES

Last Saturday (9.4.2016), for our wood workshop and third edition of our Cee Cee Lessons, we took over the studio of Rainer Spehl in Berlin-Mitte to manufacture custom-made wooden chopping boards. After a little introduction to the materials we’d be using, we got started: the Cee Cee team, the guys from Bulleit Whiskey and the 10 invited guests all spent the next five hours sawing, glueing, planing and filing – true to our motto of “hands on”. At the end of the day, we all went home proud, happy and carrying our own handmade chopping board.  You can find out more about Rainer, his work and our workshops here, and you can find the video of our experience online here. (Photo: Andreas Bohlender)

SCHLUCK — A MAGAZINE DEDICATED TO WINE (IN GERMAN)

SCHLUCK — A MAGAZINE DEDICATED TO WINE (IN GERMAN)

At the beginning of September 2015, a new wine magazine appeared on the scene. “Schluck“, which is German for “sip”, is published independently, twice per year, on a relatively small scale. Their first edition was a huge hit, but publishers Julia Klüber, Paul Truszkowski and Christian Schärmer paused only to uncork a few celebratory bottles of wine before going straight back to work on the next issue, devoted to the topic of natural wines. Natural wine had always been a trend that I had never quite understood, yet after reading the article by Christoph Raffelt, I can finally tell you the difference between conventionally produced wines, organic wines, biodynamic wines and natural wines! The other topics which feature in this latest March edition range from a round-up of the most beautiful typography and design found on wine labels, to a look at the craft beer process – brewing is an art too, after all. The magazine is informative, well designed, entertaining and is as equally devoted to the people behind the wine industry as the wine itself. Read it curled up on the sofa (accompanied by a glass of wine, of course), and you’ll never be lost for words at a wine list again. (Text: Helen von der Höden / Photo: Daniel Farò)

ESHK BERLIN — LONDON HAIR SALON LANDS IN NEUKÖLLN

ESHK BERLIN — LONDON HAIR SALON LANDS IN NEUKÖLLN

Ten years ago, the first ESHK Hair salon was established in Goswell Road in East London, and there are now two more spread across this city. Here in Berlin, owner Miguel had been working in hairdressing for 15 years when founders Meg and Fernando approached him to ask if he would like take on the running of their new German salon. Miguel accepted, and so in December 2015, close to Körnerpark, the first ESHK Berlin opened its doors. The original concept has been expanded to include a record store alongside the salon, with a well-curated selection of vinyls to browse and play. The salon’s interior bears little resemblance to the former sex cinema that it used to be, with huge wide windows, stripped wood flooring and wallpaper free walls. Only the neon sign hanging above the counter which asks “is legal sex anal?” is a cheeky reminder of the old days. As for the haircut, I was completely satisfied; they used Kevin Murphy organic products, and I left with my hair soft and velvety. It’s a successful overall concept, and I am now their newest regular customer. (Text: Helen von der Höden / Photo: Iveta Ryšavá)

CEE CEE LESSON 2: TEA – BEHIND THE SCENES

CEE CEE LESSON 2: TEA – BEHIND THE SCENES

Together with ten friends and two wonderful winners Liv and Yves, we hosted our second Cee Cee Lesson at the Manuteefaktur and in-house tea salon last Sunday (21.2.2016). Instructed by Manuteefaktur’s owner Manu, we learned how to make our own Kombucha, created a unique individual chai blend, and last but not least, made a limited edition punch. The concoction was based on Rooibos tea which we bottled, labeled and saved some for later. We did however try it during the lesson; our punch mixed with Bulleit Whiskey on the rocks with a sprig of rosemary certainly did not disappoint. The recipe will be posted on Instagram soon and we highly recommend you to try it at home. But for now, check out our lessons page for more images and watch the video of our afternoon workshop. The Cee Cee lessons series will continue in April; the next topic on the curriculum is going to be all about wood. Stay tuned! (Text: Nina Trippel / Photo: Andreas Bohlender)
