ESTELLE DINING: MEDITERRANEAN SMALL PLATES AND PIZZA FOR MIX-AND-MATCH DINNERS

ESTELLE DINING: MEDITERRANEAN SMALL PLATES AND PIZZA FOR MIX-AND-MATCH DINNERS

Named after co-founder Jared Bassoff’s grandma, restaurant Estelle Dining opened in early 2020 with the former The Store chef teaming up with his wife Rebecca. Walk in and you are greeted by ceiling-high shelves holding an interesting selection of biodynamic wines, below which stand terrazzo tables and peach-colored cushions which complement the wood, concrete and brass of the interior design. The menu is as well thought out as the surroundings, with dishes like the whipped ricotta served with focaccia, prawns, anchovies and Caesar salad with raw vegetables served in white bean purée. The plates tend to be smaller, making them perfect for group sharing sessions, though if you want a dish for yourself, the pizzas – authentically baked in the 450 degree oven – are a solid choice, creatively topped with the likes of charred onions and roasted garlic cream with lovage. The desserts don’t disappoint either, with a milk ice cream with Dulce de Leche, pretzel and peanut as well as the Bounty-like coconut sorbet. Jared, your grandma would be proud! TUPAC: A CREATIVE TAKE ON LATIN AMERICAN CUISINE IN THE BERGMANNKIEZ

TUPAC: A CREATIVE TAKE ON LATIN AMERICAN CUISINE IN THE BERGMANNKIEZ

Want to see what Latin American cuisine offers beyond classic tacos and ceviche? Then Tupac is the right place for you. Founders, friends David Pollack-Destiny and Ariel Peralta, show how courage and creativity can be used to create something original from seemingly simple ingredients. Chef Ariel reinterprets the classics by going beyond convention, but this restaurant isn’t just about creative freedom in cooking; much emphasis is placed on the sourcing, quality and seasonality of ingredients. This care and creativity is fully realized in dishes like the spicy pimiento peppers with aromatic shiitake mushroom filling and the fresh asparagus coated in delicate melted manchego cheese and homemade guava marmalade. Spectacular cocktails are the perfect pairing for the dishes, and dessert is no less memorable: a homemade sweet potato doughnut with peanut praline and chipotle chili for a tasty interplay of sweet and spicy flavors. This is Latin American food like you’ve never had it. (Text: Lisa Staub / Photos: Savannah van der Niet)

KINK BAR & RESTAURANT: WORLDLY FLAVORS SERVED WITH EASYGOING ELEGANCE

KINK BAR & RESTAURANT: WORLDLY FLAVORS SERVED WITH EASYGOING ELEGANCE

Most restaurants have now reopened just in time for summer, but few will beat the experience at Kink Bar & Restaurant, a culinary joy that opened in June 2020 in the peaceful, tree-lined grounds of Pfefferberg, a former brewery in Prenzlauer Berg. Sat there it’s hard to believe you are in the middle of the city, but when the menus arrive and you get your first taste of Kink’s surprising blend of worldly spices and ingredients – with a beautiful glass of wine on the side – you know you’re in Berlin. Chef Ivano Pirolo has Michelin star experience, and it shows in his dishes: elegantly arranged Beelitzer asparagus with miso, guinea fowl with a rosemary jus, and a wild garlic risotto – all served in tapas size and price. While the outdoor seating area enchants, the two-level interior created by owners Oliver Mansaray and Daniel Scheppan is a moody, cozy place to dine and drink, with upcycled materials and contemporary artworks revealing the pair’s great attention to detail. Inside or out, dinner at Kink is a sensory and cultural delight. (Text: Rei Matsuoka / Photos: Lee Edward für Kink Bar & Restaurant)

NEUE REPUBLIK REGER: TASTY PLANT-BASED BURGERS WITH PRINCIPLES TO MATCH

NEUE REPUBLIK REGER: TASTY PLANT-BASED BURGERS WITH PRINCIPLES TO MATCH

A republic should be committed to the common good, and vegan eatery Neue Republik Reger wants to fuel those making it happen. They believe that anyone who wants to change the world needs a clear head and a full stomach. Friends Lena, Pit and Tatze opened the Alt-Treptow space in August 2018 as a cafe and bar, and a few months later were ready to fry. Now, the menu boasts burgers such as Pulled Seitan with coleslaw and BBQ chipotle sauce and Tempting Tempeh with corn chips for those who like crunch. Try their vegan version of poutine, or “classic” Berlin Curryvurst paired with a beer, long drinks, wine or housemade lemonade. While the summer sun’s still out you can also pick up some (vegan) soft serve ice cream: Oreo, vanilla – whatever your flavor. Building the world they want to live in, Neue Republik Reger’s system is simple: Plant-based, harm-free and open to all. This is a restaurant with a philosophy that’s to everyone’s taste. LA CÔTE FOR FRENCH-MED CLASSICS AND INSPIRED COCKTAILS IN SCHILLERKIEZ

LA CÔTE FOR FRENCH-MED CLASSICS AND INSPIRED COCKTAILS IN SCHILLERKIEZ

It can take a while to fine-tune the feel of a neighbourhood restaurant, so it comes as a surprise that La Côte was only opened in February 2020 by Swedish exports Rebecca Gulam and Felix Bergman. Behind the terrazzo-topped bar, Christian Cordes shakes his signature cocktails, whose eclectic components (gin, aquavit, raspberry fudge, lemon and Greek yoghurt) pair well with mediterranean snacks – oysters, katsuobushi tuna-flecked Padrón peppers – for a satisfying aperitif. The kitchen team, led by Basil Gieldon, ex-Industry Standard and Wild Things, equally have their flavor pairings down to an art: silky burrata is tempered with firm peach, basil and crisped hazelnut, succulent snails melt into beurre à la bourguignonne, and pillowy gnocchi sits atop tender broccolini, tempered with wild garlic and parmesan. More modest appetites are accommodated, while drinks come courtesy of Felix’s expansive European-focused wine list. Whether or not you’re a Schillerkiez local, your first visit to La Côte is unlikely to be your last. (Text: Anna Dorothea Ker / Photos: Daniel Faró)
