MAGIC JOHN’S: A SLICE OF NEW YORK PIZZA IN MITTE

MAGIC JOHN’S: A SLICE OF NEW YORK PIZZA IN MITTE

Magic John’s has made New York-style pizza its speciality. Walk in and you are greeted by two scaffold-style displays where you can watch chefs lock and load the pizzas before you make your choice, either mixing and matching slices or going for the full pie. Israeli-born owner Jonathan Margulies moved to New York at the age of thirteen, where among other things (art school, delivering pizza, eating pizza) he opened restaurants with his brother Shaul Margulies (now co-owner of House of Small Wonder). After moving to Berlin in 2004, it’s not the big smoke he misses, but the pizza, and on the menu you’ll find classic Margherita, Truffle (white sauce, portobello, truffled ricotta and parsley) and Butternut (vegan option with squash, sesame sauce and caramelised onion) plus an olive-packed pizza that was a daily fixture in Margulies’ childhood diet (a pepperoni-decked option is on the way). Chase your cheesy slice with local Kombucha by Roy or beer by Motel. There are a couple of seats, but Magic John’s is intended to be eaten on-the-go, in a New York minute. SOYDIVISION WEEKLY CUISINE AND CULTURE — FROM KREUZBERG TO KUPANG, BERLIN TO BORNEO

SOYDIVISION WEEKLY CUISINE AND CULTURE — FROM KREUZBERG TO KUPANG, BERLIN TO BORNEO

Ready for a taste-based journey across the Indonesian archipelago? Let art and culinary collective Soydivision take you there. We have previously featured their Soy&Synth series of pop-up dinner-concerts, and since the lockdown the team – assembled by Bandung-born Ariel William Orah – have taken their food-art mashup online, with a weekly takeaway dinner series, web mag Soy&Zine and an online edition of Soy&Synth streaming this Saturday (30.05.2020) from 19h. Food wise, each week explores a different region of Indonesia, with a menu featuring two Nasi Campur options (white rice with a selection of side dishes) including a vegan choice. From tempeh in Manado spices (bruised lemongrass, lemon basil) to steamed tofu, smoked jackfruit and Karadok (West Java vegetable salad with peanut sauce), this is takeaway food with a lot of surprises. If you just want to sample the Indonesian basics, you can also order à la carte classics including beef rendang and homemade Sambal with stinky beans. For sounds and visuals to match the flavors, check out Soydivision’s YouTube channel, and for the latest menu and upcoming events see Instagram. This is a long-haul voyage we can get into. G WIE GOULASCH: FEEL GOOD FOOD TO GO — RECOMMENDED BY LILLI LANGENHEIM

G WIE GOULASCH: FEEL GOOD FOOD TO GO — RECOMMENDED BY LILLI LANGENHEIM

Serving food that tastes better warmed up was André Schmermbeck’s idea when he opened G wie Goulasch with a friend in 2009. The main dish served here is clear from the name, and while André has always had jars of goulash to go, at present this is the only way to enjoy it (their full reopening is still tba). There are several options to take home, including Szegediner (pork goulash), beef goulash and for vegans ratatouille. Crucially, every dish is fried: according to André “without frying it’s not goulash”. The jars are available in three sizes and can be kept in the refrigerator for up to three months. You can pair up your chosen dish with bread dumplings or pasta plus seasonal extras like rocket pesto, soups and chutneys. For a liquid accompaniment there is a solid wine selection from Köpenicker Weinladen as well as Belgian Trappist beers and apricot liqueur. The restaurant itself exudes rustic charm and is a lovely place to spend time. But for now, you can still pick up a jar of comfort food that tastes just as good – or better – at home. Lilli Langenheim lives in her birthplace of Kreuzberg. She works as a freelance art & creative director. Lukas Heibges is a freelance photographer living in Neukölln.

CREATIVITY & COOKING — WORKSHOPS AND FOOD BOXES FROM C/O BERLIN AND BARKIN’KITCHEN

CREATIVITY & COOKING — WORKSHOPS AND FOOD BOXES FROM C/O BERLIN AND BARKIN’KITCHEN

As we know, culture is a mainly online affair at the moment, and the web offerings from C/O Berlin are showing just how varied it can be. Normally, Amerika Haus at Bahnhof Zoo is home to exhibits from the upper echelons of contemporary photography, but things have switched up and now the artists are curating the show. For the C/O Berlin Hosts series, every week a different photographer is taking over the house’s Instagram account. Following Stefanie Moshammer, Joel Meyerowitz, Lina Scheynius and Adam Broomberg, Anna-Lena Krause is now set to take over with an exploration of the theme “Longing and Belonging”. From Thursday 14.05.2020 on you can get active yourself with photo and video artist Anja Hitzenberger, who with her workshop Stretch You Creative Muscles! is offering five weeks of input and guidance for your own photo practice. Also coming to your home are some culinary delights: given the gallery cafe’s current closure, food partners Barkin’Kitchenhave designed DIY meal boxes for cooking at home, featuring new seasonal recipes from founders Antonio Rilling and Frederik Jagla. They served us up a lunch package with a fresh cutlet, potato gratin and stuffed peppers, and so with our culinary needs now taken care of, we’re ready for some cultural nourishment. STOCK UP WITH STELLA — COMBAT COOKING STRESS WITH FOOD PACKAGES FOR ALL TASTES

STOCK UP WITH STELLA — COMBAT COOKING STRESS WITH FOOD PACKAGES FOR ALL TASTES

Spending our days at home means lots of cooking, which while fun can feel unrelenting with all the shopping lists, meal planning and fridge management needed. And with homeschooling duties often on top, many of us want an escape from the prepping. Enter Neukölln-based Stella restaurant, a long-time Cee Cee favorite. Owner Suzy, who also runs catering company Fortuna’s Table & Co, is now offering her classic dishes to go, plus a range of stock-up food packages all delivered to your door. We tried the Home Office package which includes several hot and cold options including NY-style sesame noodles, an uber-tasty lemon aioli potato salad, crunchy regional slaw and a coconut curry. Full of aroma and goodness, this is truly satisfying comfort food. The package itself is fun to explore, and one delivery can keep you going for up to four days, depending on how big your household is. Suzy’s offering is all about stocking up, and almost all dishes will stay fresh in the fridge for a couple of days. Our fave – one guaranteed to put a smile on everyone’s face – is the lemon poppy seed cake. Simply pick a package – Home Office, Lazy Days or Feed the Family – and dig in.
