SMART URBAN RIDES THAT TAKE THE STRAIN OUT OF CYCLING — E-BIKES FROM COWBOY

SMART URBAN RIDES THAT TAKE THE STRAIN OUT OF CYCLING — E-BIKES FROM COWBOY

Want to explore this week’s art action by bike but lack the stamina for all that urban criss-crossing? Luckily help is at hand from the folks at Cowboy, who make connected e-bikes for urban riders. Their goal: improve metropolitan mobility by getting city dwellers from A to B sustainably, comfortably and efficiently. Since 2017 the company has been pushing e-bike boundaries with their smart, sleek-looking electric wheels that are all about safety, comfort, intuitive handling and peace of mind. The bike certainly has some cutting-edge software features: it alerts you if your bike is stolen, notifies emergency contacts in the event of a fall and plans routes using air quality data so you can always move through the cleanest parts of the city.

If you fancy a test ride and want to learn more, head to the Cowboy flagship store in Mitte which is decorated with Berlin’s renowned cobblestones. The two-hour rides are ideal for doing a bit of gallery hopping during Art Week: start out at Galerie Thomas Fischer before taking a quick coffee break at Sofi and cycling over to Sprüth Magers, where exhibitions by John Baldessari, Kaari Upson and other artists await. You can book a test ride online

Fashion Week may be behind us, but style, interiors and art are still very much on our radar. You can check out all three at the Autumn Edition hosted at and by Nella Beljan Gallery (fka Zora Auguste) this weekend and next. Beljan is a cultural journalist, digital strategist and friend of the Cee Cee cosmos who curates and collaborates with various artists, brands and designers to create her stylish collections. This time you’ll find jewelry made from recycled silver by Azulmalin Jewellery, organic ceramic sculptures by Elena S. V. Palomo, ready-to-wear garments by Saint from Australia, silk lingerie by Zodiaque Studios and much more. The showroom and gallery is billed as a place for inspiration, coming together and conscious consumption. With its airy concrete ceilings and large glass frontage, the Leipziger Straße premises offers the ideal setting for stylish weekend browsing.

MEDITERRANEAN SPECIALITIES, COFFEE AND ICE CREAM-FILLED FRUIT — KIOSK SARDELLE RECOMMENDED BY JOHANNA DUMET

MEDITERRANEAN SPECIALITIES, COFFEE AND ICE CREAM-FILLED FRUIT — KIOSK SARDELLE RECOMMENDED BY JOHANNA DUMET

It’s already won the hearts of many Weddingers: Kiosk Sardelle, the little yellow and gray Kiez shop on Kiautschoustrasse that sells a well-chosen assortment of groceries and gifts. On top of that, it’s also a cafe serving coffee, cold drinks and even ice cream served in fruit shells! Owners Miriam and Lioba opened the space in February 2022 and offer around 120 products, most sourced from Southern Europe but also closer to home. Some actually come from Wedding, including the Kawa coffee, handmade sketchbooks from Sara Bellinghausen (Hand & Wort) and Caracciolo wine from a maker who lives just around the corner. My top five products? The Espinaler vermouth, the anchovies and olives from Spain, the mandarin chocolate from Italy, the Torres truffle chips from Spain and the Sola Fuet Espetec salami.

The abundance of Spanish products is down to the fact that Lioba and Miriam both lived in Barcelona, where I met Lioba in 2010. I remember our wild nights drinking homemade vermouth on the Rambla de Raval and meeting for breakfast bocadillos before heading to the beach. The duo’s shop sells bocadillos made with fresh bread from neighboring bakery Hansis Brot and offers wine and vermouth tasting. You can also pick up a picnic hamper filled with drinks and snacks and take it to the canal or to Plotzensee (a 15 minute walk away). I can only recommend you to go and check out the shop – don’t forget to say hi to Miriam and Lioba from me!

THE BEST OF THE OLD AND THE NEWEST OF THE NEW — ANDREAS MURKUDIS CELEBRATES 20 YEARS

THE BEST OF THE OLD AND THE NEWEST OF THE NEW — ANDREAS MURKUDIS CELEBRATES 20 YEARS

It’s Andreas Murkudis’s birthday – or rather that of his universe. Murkudis opened his first shop, back then still in Mitte, 20 years ago (yes, it really has been two decades!). For almost as long, he has been at the forefront of Berlin’s fashion and art scene and his name has become synonymous with quality and international flair – something hard to find in the city even today. There are three shops on Potsdamer Straße, each named after its house number: 77, 81 and 98. The most famous – Store 81 – is located in the backyard of the Mercator Höfe, surrounded by galleries in the rooms of the former Tagesspiegel print press. This space and two other premises in the immediate vicinity are to host various events over the next few days to mark the anniversary of a name known for design, fashion and art.

Saturday (20.08.2022) sees a presentation of the world’s largest Helmut Lang vintage collection courtesy of Endyma, a fashion archive founded by collector Michael Kardamakis. The fit is perfect, and not just because of the late 90s aesthetic: like Murkudis, Lang’s work has always crossed boundaries as with his acclaimed collaboration with artist Jenny Holzer who, among other things, designed Lang’s stores. Incidentally: the exhibits aren’t just for looking at – they’re also for sale. Saturday is also the launch of the latest cooperation between Raf Simons and Kvadrat in the Store 77 furniture shop, as well as a new edition of the exhibition Das Haus with objects from designer duo e15. Events continue during Berlin Art Week (14–18.09), World Coastal Cleanup Day together with the Feuerle CollectionValerie Objects and others.

CARTOONS, MYSTERY COMICS, ANIME RARITIES AND GRAPHIC NOVEL PICKS — INSTORE AND ONLINE AT MODERN GRAPHICS

CARTOONS, MYSTERY COMICS, ANIME RARITIES AND GRAPHIC NOVEL PICKS — INSTORE AND ONLINE AT MODERN GRAPHICS

Superhero stories, Japanese manga and limited edition action figures stacked as high as the ceiling. In Michael Wießler’s bookshop Modern Graphics on Kreuzberg’s Oranienstraße, you’ll find no shortage of gems from the world of Marvel, DC, Tintin, Asterix and the like. It’s a beautiful chaos that has existed since 1991. If you can’t find the comic you’re looking for or want to browse at home before you buy, Modern Graphics also runs an online shop on eBay. It comes courtesy of eBay Kleine Shops, where you can shop locally online and discover diverse traders from the comfort of your sofa 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Whether you’re looking for that precious Pokémon or Yu-Gi-Oh! card you’ve been missing or have a nephew’s or cousin’s birthday coming up, you’ll find what you need here.

The physical shop has graphic novels in German and English plus merch from Japan’s Studio Ghibli. And then there’s the comics, which you could easily spend hours reading. There’s appeal for everyone, not just for collectors. In addition to his regular shop in the heart of Kreuzberg, owner Michael has opened two more branches in Berlin: one manga-filled shop at Europa Center on Ku’damm and another in 2016 in Prenzlauer Berg which is focused on French comics, graphic novels and children’s comics. And if you shop online with eBay, you can order special comics from the USA and see the entire range of the three Berlin shops at a glance. Let the deep dive begin!
