THI PHAM RECOMMENDS: JUWEL

THI PHAM RECOMMENDS: JUWEL

On my trips to Berlin I have noticed many shops selling clothes and handbags which are fashion-forward yet lacking in quality. This trend finally seems to be going in the opposite direction, with conscious consumption catching on. That’s why I’m thrilled to have found the bag label Lamari Berlin, which stands for quality materials and fair manufacturing conditions. The bags are sold at the colorful shop Juwel, owned by Berlin designer Marijana Jähnke. Its name speaks for itself: a hidden gem in the heart of Prenzlauer Berg, tucked in beside the water tower. In addition to her leather bags, Marijana sells select jewelry and lifestyle accessories by other designers. The space – a blend of studio and concept store – is lovingly furnished with self-made tables and shelves. The workshop in the back is where the skilled designer imagines and creates each bag from fine Italian leather. During my last visit, I bought a couple of handbags and two wallets — one for myself, the other as a gift. (Text: Thi Pham / Photos: Juwel, Lamari Berlin)

OPTIMISTIC PRALINES: CANDIDE SCHOKOLADEN

OPTIMISTIC PRALINES: CANDIDE SCHOKOLADEN

At Candide, you can watch as pastry chef Daniel Budde works his confectionery magic with flavor and texture constantly on his mind. Having trained in Michelin starred restaurants, Daniel knows a thing or two about his art. With a two-week flavor turnaround, Candide takes a unique stand, so you’re always guaranteed something new and fresh (truffle hazelnut and blackcurrant cassis pralines being among the selection). From the creation of the pralines to boxing and packaging, Daniel is in control every step of the way, with each chocolate box showcasing the work of Berlin-based artists. Taking its name from Voltaire’s great satirical novella, Candide is the eternal optimist, giving Berliners a glimpse of love and dedication in chocolate form. Order online or visit Arminius-Markthalle and take home a chocolate box your friends and family will inevitably swoon over. (Text & Photos: Emilie Wade)

SWEDISH STYLE MEETS BERLIN COOL AT WEEKDAY’S NEW STORE

The thrill of a new season wardrobe stock-up is all the more exciting when experienced in a brand new, custom-fitted location — and the chance to see your next new item being created right in front of your eyes. Just yesterday (31.11.18), Swedish fashion brand Weekday opened the doors to its third Berlin store, which features its very own print studio where the latest designs will be printed on a weekly basis. Located in the just-opened East Side Mall near Warschauer Str., the 700m², split-level shop combines industrial flair with an urban chic feeling, creating a spacious, inspiring atmosphere in which to browse and try on favorite pieces. This weekend (2.-4.11.2018) presents the perfect opportunity to explore it all, with extended opening hours on Friday and Sunday, plus, on Saturday (3.11.2018), an opening celebration with DJs, drinks and discounts at all three Weekday Berlin stores — as well as the chance to win one of 25 pairs of jeans at each one. Shopping lists at the ready — you won’t be leaving empty-handed! (Text: Anna Dorothea Ker / Photos: Weekday)

CULT EYEWEAR LABEL OLIVER PEOPLES OPENS ON KU’DAMM

CULT EYEWEAR LABEL OLIVER PEOPLES OPENS ON KU’DAMM

Bauhaus permeates countless elements of this city’s style, and now you can also incorporate it into your own. In early October 2018, Californian luxury eyewear brand Oliver Peoples opened its first boutique in Germany on Ku’Damm. In keeping with the brand’s shop designs throughout the world, the interior takes heed from Californian Mid-Century Modernism, combining it with the movement’s Bauhaus origins — the classic “Bauhaus blue” sets the mood, complemented by rich walnut wood and chrome elements and finished with lamps from the ’20s and ’30s. All this provides a chic backdrop for the range of handcrafted frames for women and men, available as sunglasses or prescription glasses in the iconic styles, the Resort 2019 collection and a duo of frames created together with fashion brand The Row. A pair of limited-edition “Berlin” frames with blue-tinted lenses are exclusively available in this store — get into the mood with a campaign shot by Denise Bodden featuring Stella von Senger in iconic Modernist locations around town, like Mies van der Rohe’s Landhaus Lemke and Corbusierhaus Berlin.
