PARS RESTAURANT — ARTISAN CHOCOLATIER BREAKS THE MOLD WITH FINE DINING VENUE

PARS RESTAURANT — ARTISAN CHOCOLATIER BREAKS THE MOLD WITH FINE DINING VENUE

Chocolatier Kristiane Kegelmann came to Berlin in 2016 to conquer the capital’s culinary scene. Since then, her handmade chocolates have been teasing our taste buds with their unique quality and craftsmanship. These one-of-a-kind chocolates are not just regular pralines: every single ingredient has been put together with love and precision. Visually, they are reminiscent of gemstones, with straight lines and hints of pink and gold. It’s a look Kristiane describes as “pure, reduced and to the point”. This style has now been used to create something a bit bigger: a restaurant. Architects DMtk and Some Place Studio were commissioned to transform Café Savigny in Charlottenburg into a bold, straightforward dining room called Pars, opening November 2022. It’s not just a place for chocolates, but a whole new dining destination out west.

Alina Jakobsmeier, Kristiane’s head pastry chef and chef de cuisine, gave us a first (and promising) glimpse into Pars’ fine dining concept at a preview sitting on Saturday (12.11.2022). We were treated to a seven-course menu including paired wines from sommelier Christoph Geyler. Our highlight was the homemade ravioli filled with herb mushrooms in a full-bodied shallot reduction and dill flowers, followed by amaranth, pickled Brussels sprouts and bacon. Alina’s culinary direction is clear and direct: high-quality regional ingredients in dishes that are light, honest and elegant. The restaurant features a large asymmetrical “chef’s table”, which fellow restaurateurs will recognize from their professional cutting boards. The kitchen is open, letting you watch Alina and her team as they work calmly and professionally. With Pars restaurant, Savignyplatz and West Berlin are heading in a very tasty direction indeed.

FRAGRANCES AND FRIENDS — SCENT STUDIO POP-UP FROM ATELIER OBLIQUE

FRAGRANCES AND FRIENDS — SCENT STUDIO POP-UP FROM ATELIER OBLIQUE

Mario Lombardo and Vanessa Obrecht, founders of Berlin perfume house Atelier Oblique, have made quite a name for themselves in the fragrance world. Drawing inspiration from their lives and the city they’ve lived in for many years, the duo’s perfumes are full of memories. Part Berlin, part Grasse, part Paris, their collections are handmade in Germany. We’ve long been fans of their elegant Mitte boutique and of course the products themselves: handmade candles that reflect Lombardo’s timeless design taste and perfumes that remind you of Berlin club nights and spring days in April. As Atelier Oblique has grown, so has the network behind it. You can meet this fragrance family yourself starting today (17.11.2022) at the launch of “Scent Studio”, a pre-Christmas pop-up which will see Lombardo and Obrecht bring together exciting boutique labels and fragrance creators from all over Europe.

Until 23.12, fragrance houses from Amsterdam, Bologna, Vienna and Barcelona are setting up shop at Atelier Oblique’s space, including Norwegian Dag Laska, who combines the olfactory landscapes of Scandinavia with clean Nordic design with his brand Son Venïn. He’ll be at the launch to personally present his latest creations, as will Nico Mannino from Swiss label Pernoire. If you fancy meeting these scent experts – or just want to hear from Mario how his Argentinian childhood influenced his perfumes – stop by the Mitte shop from tonight for a chat and a glass of wine

KIMCHI BOWLS, BBQ BURGERS, NYC COOKIES & BIODYNAMIC WINES — FEMALE FOOD DAYS AT POTSDAMER PLATZ

KIMCHI BOWLS, BBQ BURGERS, NYC COOKIES & BIODYNAMIC WINES — FEMALE FOOD DAYS AT POTSDAMER PLATZ

Today marks the start of Female Food Days (17–19.11.2022), a three-day feast at The Playce at Potsdamer Platz featuring street food stands from all over the world. Local newcomers and established gastro players – all run by women – will be setting up shop and we’re here to give you the highlights. At Afropot you can try West African cuisine inspired by Ghanaian home cooking, while over at Love Bites you can grab doughy NYC-style cookies. One must-try is the Korean bibimbap bowl from Fräulein Kimchi, or there’s the smoked pulled pork BBQ burgers from duo Anna and Tom at Big Stuff Smoked BBQ (you might know them from Markthalle Neun). If it’s Italian comfort food you’re after, be sure to pay Gnoccheria Berlin a visit.

Decorated with colorful fabrics, lanterns and hanging plants, the stalls include locally brewed beer from Berliner Berg and lemonades and biodynamic wine from Treat Berlin, who are also doing wine tastings. There will also be an exciting workshop with Piaplants, plus a cozy hangout area with live music and DJs including Lockereasy. To finish up is something sweet: handmade mochi from Daifuku Mochi or (and?) elegant vegan cakes from Mansfield Park. The perfect lunch or after-work meal? We think so.

INSIDE OUT — GALLERY MOLITOR OPENS WITH AN EXHIBITION STRETCHING OUT ONTO THE STREET

INSIDE OUT — GALLERY MOLITOR OPENS WITH AN EXHIBITION STRETCHING OUT ONTO THE STREET

Georgian-American artist Ketuta Alexi-Meskhishvili’s exhibition begins on the street: her printed, transparent curtains cover the window front of Galerie Molitor – which opened in autumn 2022 – like a bluish veil. The winter sky combines with Alexi-Meskhishvili’s airy compositions in a blend of inside and outside, reality and image. The interplay lures you into the space – an ensemble of glass buildings designed by architects Johanna Meyer-Grohbrügge and Sam Chermayeff. Born in Tbilisi in 1979 and raised in the USA, Alexi-Meskhishvili spent her childhood in theaters, where her father worked as a set and costume designer. This work – with its raised floors and layered backdrops – still interests her today. Alexi-Meskhishvili’s delicate photographs draw on permeability both in the image and the medium: sometimes you recognize a flower-filled street or the silhouette of a woman, other times you see only abstraction. The photographer deliberately scratches and overexposes her images when she scans them, and manipulates the surface of the negative film itself. These imperfections give the works a pulsating, beguiling beauty.

In addition to photographs, Alexi-Meskhishvili is also showing her first film,”Flush”, which lends the exhibition its name. In it, she mixes iPhone footage with 16mm film in which you see the hands of a sculptor next to a pregnant woman and a girl’s hair bleached by vitiligo. These images summon silence: an exploration of the gaps in between. For gallery owner Marie-Christine Molitor, it’s a strong opening. The exhibition sets the tone for what is to come – and Molitor has lots planned. After ten years at Galerie Neu, she opened her gallery in Autumn 2022. “The program of the gallery has a strong focus on collectivity, collaboration, diversity, sustainability, openness and working ethically and digitally,” Molitor says. How serious she is about these promises is made clear with her collaboration with New York-based artist Dora Budor – and her next group exhibition. Opening 09.12.2022, it will give participating artists a share of the show’s profits, in a kind of employee partnership. It’s an important step towards better working conditions in an industry that makes millions but where fair pay is far from the norm.

SAINT CHARLES COMPLEMENTS: SELFCARE, NATURAL COSMETICS & PLANT-BASED WELLBEING IN WILMERSDORF

SAINT CHARLES COMPLEMENTS: SELFCARE, NATURAL COSMETICS & PLANT-BASED WELLBEING IN WILMERSDORF

Natural, sustainable, vegan, organic. These are words on any conscious beauty buyer’s lips, as demand for medicinal plants and natural ingredients keeps growing. Many opt for traditional herbal medicine for holistic well-being and beauty, both inside and out. It’s a philosophy shared by pharmacist Sabine Oeverhaus-Zeeck, who opened natural cosmetics shop Saint Charles Complements in Wilmersdorf in autumn 2019. It’s an offshoot of her Saint Charles pharmacy, located in the shop next door. Inside is a place dedicated to nourishing natural cosmetics for use both at home and in the day spa located behind the shop. With oak parquet flooring and essential oils filling the air, this is a mecca for sustainable, natural care. In addition to own brand Saint Charles (founded in 1886 in Vienna) you’ll find high-end care products by Pharmos Natur from Bavaria, The Organic Pharmacy from London, natural hair care from Innersense Organic Beauty, vegan nail polish from NailberryMalin+Goetz from New York and local organic cosmetics from Berlin’s Und Gretel.

There are also tea blends, scented candles, jewelry, handmade cosmetic bags from Offenbach leather manufacturer F. Hammann and aromatic essences at the scent bar. The holistic approach extends to the bottles: Saint Charles’ own-brand packaging is made of glass or recycled materials. If you are looking to tick some items off the gift list – and treat yourself while you’re at it – this is the place to head for.
