COMEDY LOVERS LISTEN UP: THE BERLIN FRINGE FESTIVAL AT THE COMEDY CAFÉ IS BACK

COMEDY LOVERS LISTEN UP: THE BERLIN FRINGE FESTIVAL AT THE COMEDY CAFÉ IS BACK

Calling all comedy lovers! The Berlin Fringe, a theater and comedy festival at Comedy Café Berlin, has returned after a few-year hiatus and is full of more laughs than ever! Beginning today (27.07.23) and running through Sunday (30.07.2023), the Fringe will play host to eleven shows by award-winning comedians. Whether you’re looking for stand-up, improv, physical comedy – or even something a little more experimental – there’s something for every funny bone. Lisa Frischemeier — you may know her as the host of the feminist stand-up showcase Witch Hunt or have seen a copy of her new book I See Vulvas Everywhere — has put together a diverse lineup, with standup and storytelling, acts drawing from both international and local talent. Why not kick off the weekend at Matilde Keizer’s work in progress The Seven Women one Woman Show, which incorporates clown and improv? Chase that with The Town Cryer, Brooke Finegold’s blended poetry and storytelling act, or the improvised musical performance by Band Practice. Josh Glanc, hailing from Australia and traveling from the UK, is a well-known talent whose unique performances have sold out shows at London’s Soho Theatre and the Edinburgh Fringe. And there’s only one way to find out what Berlin New Stand Up Award 2023 winner Theo Mason Wood’s Blood Sweat and Gluten is all about.

Comedy Café Berlin, also known affectionately as CCB, has been proudly planted on Neukölln’s Weserstraße since 2015 as Berlin’s first international, alternative comedy venue. Their regular programming features long-form improv, sketch, and stand-up comedy in both English and German – and more! Not to mention a full bar with local craft beer from BRLO and Berliner Berg, friendly staff, and an unpretentious, welcoming community. If you’re hungry for even more comedy after this weekend, CCB has shows going on every Thursday through Saturday, as well as open improv “jams” on Sundays and an excellent training school with a range of courses and workshops. And keep a lookout: in September they’re holding another international festival, Das Improv Festival.

FRENCH-MEDITERRANEAN LUXURY AT BISTRO PRICES — Á LA CARTE AT RICHARD BISTRO

FRENCH-MEDITERRANEAN LUXURY AT BISTRO PRICES — Á LA CARTE AT RICHARD BISTRO

The antique leaded glass windows are open, a breeze wafts through the room, the daylight shades of cool blue, intermingled with touches of pastel glass under the richly decorated ceiling that feels a thousand feet high: for years, Richard has been undisputedly one of the city’s most tasteful restaurants. In the hall-like space on Köpenicker Strasse, Hans Richard has been serving up Michelin-starred cuisine that could probably best be described as classic French with a constant international dialogue and eclectic vegetables. The walls have been covered with works by many artists, from Rose Wylie, Bernhard Martin and Araki to their current display of Klossowski, Kiesewetter, Alec Soth and Nikolaus List. The selection of works is full of taste, dialogue and eclecticism, as can also be seen throughout the interior. But wait a minute. Let’s start again from the beginning: The historic leaded glass windows are open, a breeze blows through the room – and it’s Monday? And where are the white tablecloths? Everything is looser. More open. Permeable. For two weeks now, Richard has also been one of the most beautiful bistros in the city from Sunday to Wednesday. What does that mean? Food à la carte. French bistro classics (oysters, tartare, fries) with Mediterranean touches (anchovies, taboulé, baba ganoush).

This is clear, for example, in the sweet bell pepper roasted with Spanish pimentón de la vera, dipped in Italian bagna cauda and served with Levantine labneh. Many dishes are small and cold, which is great because you can try them all (or share them, of course). Warm main dishes, which come to the tables in steaming copper pots, are specifically designed for sharing. There’s a bouillabaisse  (which is so good you could manage it on your own), and a whole braised shoulder of lamb from Müritz. Enough for four to six people, it comes with dried apricots, onions and almonds. The perfect Sunday roast (they’re open on Sunday from noon on). Afterwards, you have to have a Meringue Suisse. The pavlova-like concoction tastes like a cloud on which plump little angels float. The historic leaded glass windows are open, a breeze wafts through the room, and you’re lazy, happy, slightly tipsy, and full. The warm-hearted hostess Bernadette brings the bill with a chuckling laugh – and in the end it’s not that high. Oh Richard, how good that you now also have a bistro. We really needed it.

PEAT, WATER LILIES AND EDIBLE BERRIES — A MOORLAND WALK ALONG THE BRIESE RIVER

PEAT, WATER LILIES AND EDIBLE BERRIES — A MOORLAND WALK ALONG THE BRIESE RIVER

People sometimes think of moorlands as unfriendly, gloomy places that hold nothing good. However, the opposite is true: their peat bogs are fundamental for ecosystems and must be protected. Most moorlands were formed after the last ice age when the lack of oxygen in meltwater prevented plants from decomposing. This led to the formation of peat, which is used as fuel. Today, peatlands are home to large numbers of protected plants and animals and help mitigate global warming by serving as reservoirs for greenhouse gases. With this in mind, a trip to the Briese, a small tributary of the Havel river in Brandenburg, is all the more enjoyable. The starting point is Birkenwerder, which can be reached in half an hour on the S1 from Gesundbrunnen.

As you make your way out of Birkenwerder and its well-kept front gardens, you are greeted by an unspoilt landscape of green that runs alongside the river. There’s a lot to see, including water lilies, beaver dams, alder groves, swans and an endless number of dragonflies in blue and green. There is no need for detailed directions: just follow the river before crossing the bridge to the other side where you can see the whole spectacle from another perspective. Don’t forget to bring mosquito spray and make sure you stop and for a snack of blueberries plucked from the surrounding bushes. The whole walk is about 10 km, but you can make it longer by continuing on to one of the bridges further down.

TRAVEL AND STAY IN STYLE — THE LOCKE APARTHOTEL AT THE EAST SIDE GALLERY

TRAVEL AND STAY IN STYLE — THE LOCKE APARTHOTEL AT THE EAST SIDE GALLERY

Whether it’s a weekend trip to London, a business trip to Munich or a visit to a friend in Berlin – it’s clear that no matter what city or what occasion, you’ll often face the same dilemma: wanting to be in the middle of it all, but also looking to to escape the hustle and bustle of the city for a while. Good news for anyone who has the same feeling: Locke has got you covered! Locke hotels are all in the heart of the city, but at the same time offer the perfect place to relax and unwind. They have studio apartments where you don’t have to downgrade your lifestyle during your vacation or business trip. Need your own kitchen for a midnight snack? Check. A washing machine in case you want to wear your favorite outfit more often? Check. A couch for a quick breather between sightseeing and dinner? Check. And the best part of it all: a freshly made bed after a long day? Locke doesn’t feel like a destination, more like arriving home – only with more space and luxuries. Tomorrow (21.07.2023) the Berlin hotel is opening by the East Side Gallery. As in every other Locke, the concept is the same: in addition to your own apartment, there are other rooms that other guests can use: co-working spaces, a gym and a cocktail bar and restaurant – all designed mindfully.

From September 2023, the centerpiece of the new hotel will be Anima, an audiophile bar which doubles as a restaurant and will play music around the clock. You can meet up with friends and new acquaintances for a coffee, a glass of wine or dinner and drop by on weekends for listening sessions with DJs. If you don’t want to compromise on comfort and lifestyle – even during your stay in another city – book your next room in one of their 14 aparthotels. Even far away from home, these places feel like your own living room – just a little more sophisticated, perhaps.

TEAM-BUILDING SESSIONS MODELED ON TV GAME SHOWS — YOUR SHOWDOWN

TEAM-BUILDING SESSIONS MODELED ON TV GAME SHOWS — YOUR SHOWDOWN

Fingers on buzzers for the starter question! What do you get when you mix 90s-era game shows with contemporary corporate team-building events? No idea? Well, alright: we’ll forgive you if Your Showdown wasn’t the first thing that entered your head. After all, this Berlin startup only began hosting its challenge-filled company days a few weeks ago (it launched in June 2023). Run by game-mad Maximilian Muhle and co-owner Philipp Dieckmann out of an airy industrial building in Tempelhof, this offsite concept puts a proverbial spin on the corporate event, pitting employees against each other for a series of challenges that put brains, bravery and strategy to the test. An all-powerful game master leads the sessions, which last 2.5 hours and can be booked for up to 100 people divided into teams of four. The idea: participants gain new skills vying for top place while polishing those all-important teamworking and leadership abilities. The precise nature of the games will be revealed on the day: the game master will pick activities depending on the group playing (more than 100 games are offered). You will collaborate to put together the pieces before ousting the weakest link and taking your chances on the wheel of fortune. If you’re a team leader and want to give your colleagues a challenge, this mini retreat might be just the thing to take them outside of the box. Or perhaps into it? (On top of it?!) The game master will reveal all…
