EVERY DOOR IS A POP: THE ADVENT CALENDAR FROM KNALLE POPCORN WITH 25 SURPRISES FOR YOUNG & OLD

EVERY DOOR IS A POP: THE ADVENT CALENDAR FROM KNALLE POPCORN WITH 25 SURPRISES FOR YOUNG & OLD

A little bit of pop every day? This could be your life in December if you opt for the Advent calendar from Berlin popcorn manufacturer Knalle. Aptly named “Adventsknallender“, it is a welcome alternative to the familiar disposable chocolate varieties. The included fabric hanger for 2023 is bursting with goodies – and can then be refilled as you wish next year. There are a total of nine delicious popcorn varieties to discover – two of which are exclusive to this set – including popcorn granola and candied salt pretzels. Look forward to “Almond Orange” and “Dark Chocolate Roasted Almond Cinnamon” – a vegan version from the popcorn manufacturer. For all fans: the all-time favorites “Butter Caramel Tahitian Vanilla” and the classic “Candied Walnut Maple Syrup” are of course also included. So from sweet to salty, from simple to crunchy – everyone will find their favorite here. And nibbling together is of course the motto of the Advent season anyway. Whether at movie screenings on the sofa at home, games evenings or in the office as a small snack to combat the afternoon slump – there’s always someone who wants to have a bite. And one thing is guaranteed: eating popcorn boosts the mood of young and old alike in no time at all. So, if you fancy 25 (yes, 25!) opportunities for feel-good moments – without GMOs, of course, but with popcorn popped with love from Berlin.

THE CAFE’S COFFEE — ROASTED AT COMMUNAL COFFEE IN NEUKÖLLN

THE CAFE’S COFFEE — ROASTED AT COMMUNAL COFFEE IN NEUKÖLLN

Populus on Neukölln’s Maybachufer, Jules in Gleisdreieck or August 63‘s stall at the weekly market on Hohenzollernplatz in Wilmersdorf – these cafés have one thing in common: their individual coffee roasts. This is made possible by the largest co-roastery in Germany: Communal Coffee. Not only do some of your favorite cafés develop their creations here, small and medium-sized specialty coffee brands such as Vote or Tryst also use the shared space and facilities to refine their imported raw beans into the finest espressos and filter coffees. The shared production concept ultimately benefits everyone: the high capacity utilization of the roasting machines and jointly organized logistics, for example, reduce the ecological footprint of all members. In any case, the Berlin coffee scene can no longer be imagined without Communal Coffee. An entire community is emerging around the roastery, which not only focuses on flavors but also on topics such as ethics and sustainability in coffee production.

Professional roasters and coffee enthusiasts regularly come together for talks or tastings – known as cuppings. The project was launched by Philipp Reichel, Sari and Henrik Haavisto and Janusch Munkwitz, who offer a range of services from coffee consulting to contract production in addition to storage, roasting and quality control at their location on Naumburger Straße, just behind the S-Bahn station in Neukölln. If you’ve always wanted to take a look at the scene and train your palate, mark 17.11.2023 in your calendar and be there when Communal Coffee launches its own cupping club “Not so secret society“. It starts at 17h, you don’t need any prior knowledge. Have fun sipping!

NOVEMBER DAYS AT HELLSEE — A LEISURELY LOOP HIKE IN BARNIM

NOVEMBER DAYS AT HELLSEE — A LEISURELY LOOP HIKE IN BARNIM

The days are getting shorter and it’s time to adapt your hiking route planning to the few hours of sunshine. In other words: it’s time to set off earlier and seek out Brandenburg’s hiking highlights close to the city. Hellsee is one such highlight. In my opinion, it gets far too little attention, which is probably because its neighboring lake, Liebnitzsee, with its deep blue and clear water, is an “all-time favorite” among Berliners. But in the fall, we don’t want to go swimming, we want to get away from the urban hustle and bustle. So it’s off to Gesundbrunnen station, from where it’s just a 30-minute ride north-east to Rüdnitz, a sleepy little village in Barnim. After a short distance, you’ll end up in an idyllic beech forest. Most of the leaves have now fallen from the trees in late fall and the reddish-brown foliage crunches under the soles of your hiking boots. But Hellsee has more to offer than just beech forests. To get from Rüdnitz to the lake, you walk past the lush green “Uppstallfliess”, the dead trees rise from the green still water, the untouched nature reserve is diligently shaped by beavers and if you are observant, you can discover one or two of their wooden dwellings at the water’s edge.

At Hellsee, a sunny path leads along the shore. Toppled trees jut into the water and balancing on their trunks and looking down to the bottom of the clear and calm lake is a pretty good little activity. But what we want on fall hikes is coziness and some warmth to regulate our cold hands and noses back to body temperature. It’s a good idea to make a little detour to the restaurant Bellevue halfway along the trail. The charm of the Hungarian restaurant is most welcome. Hot chocolate, apple strudel and pancakes with apricot and mango jam or curd cheese strudel help to warm you up, but you shouldn’t get too cozy (before the sun sets). Autumn is perhaps my favorite hiking season, but Hellsee is definitely one of my favorite destinations. I think it’s because of the peace and quiet to be found there — and the delicious pancakes.

BERLIN’S ANSWER TO THE THROWAWAY SOCIETY: THE ZERO WASTE FUTURE FESTIVAL BEGINS

BERLIN’S ANSWER TO THE THROWAWAY SOCIETY: THE ZERO WASTE FUTURE FESTIVAL BEGINS

Are olive oil canisters the future, and can you save the world with beer? Berliner Stadtreinigung (BSR) has big plans! Their vision is to make Berlin the zero waste capital. At the Zero Waste Future Festival 2023 (ZWFF for short) at NochMall, the BSR’s second-hand department store in Reinickendorf, this vision will become reality (14.-17.11.2023). Find out how you can make a big difference with small steps – whether it’s at the breakfast table or in your closet. The key word here is “zero waste”, a term that describes using products and raw materials for as long as possible and keeping them in circulation before they are disposed of. The ZWFF offers a three-day program, with each day dedicated to a different theme: “Food & Drink”, “Recycle” or “Repair” are the three guiding themes. Free workshops and hands-on information stands will show you how you can make your everyday life more waste-free. Pedal on the Smoothie Bike and earn yourself a fruity refreshment or learn how to creatively upgrade and ferment stale bread. The exciting conclusion to the Zero Waste Future Festival will take place on Friday (17.11., when visions for a waste-free future will be presented and you’ll be invited to try out some of these new ideas. The numerous interactive activities will start at 15h, including a clothing swap party in cooperation with youngcaritas and Lena from Gurlscrime, theater and live music. And of course, BSR will also be present with information on waste disposal, separating recyclables and reusable solutions.

AN ARCHIVE SALE NOT TO BE MISSED: BY FAR POP-UP AT THE LOVER’S SPACE

AN ARCHIVE SALE NOT TO BE MISSED: BY FAR POP-UP AT THE LOVER’S SPACE

Timeless and simple, but don’t be fooled, By Far’s designs are far from boring. Whether you’re on the hunt for a new pair of knee-high boots or a modern take on the classic loafer, By Far’s Berlin pop-up has got the goods. Worn by the likes of Barbara Palvin, Kylie Jenner and Suki Waterhouse (to name a few), By Far has been the shoe of choice for celebrities since its inception. If they existed in the 90s, we have no doubt Carrie Bradshaw would have swapped out her Manolos for a pair of their heels quicker than she could write a witty one-liner. The brand was established in 2016 by three sisters — Valentine Ignatova, Sabina Gyosheva and Denitsa Bumbarova — and has since established a cult following. Based in Bulgaria, these styles are stocked in stores across the globe. Here in Berlin, you can find their designs in Voo Store and Kadewe, but they don’t have a brick-and-mortar store of their own. Their November pop-up is a rare opportunity to try on their larger collection.

After all, there’s nothing more enjoyable than a Thursday afternoon spent perusing rows upon rows of shoes, just ask Carrie. This isn’t just any old pop-up, it’s an archive sale with, wait for it, up to 70% off their collection of unique shoes and bags. You’ll be able to score yourself a bargain at The Lover’s Space in Berlin (16.–18.11.2023). The pop-up is being hosted by Little Popup, who showcase slow fashion brands, inspire sustainability, and raise awareness for a better fashion industry. Recently Little Popup have been focusing on archive sales. By working with previous collections and giving them new life, they’re preventing waste and working towards a more sustainable industry. Get your besties together and head to The Lover’s Space to shop By Far’s reinvented 90s silhouettes. Be sure to arrive early, we’re sure there’ll be a line of shoe lovers waiting at the door…
