UNVEILING THE FUTURE — GET EXCITED ABOUT SCIENCE AT BERLIN SCIENCE WEEK 2023

UNVEILING THE FUTURE — GET EXCITED ABOUT SCIENCE AT BERLIN SCIENCE WEEK 2023

Knowledge is power. And as the past and present painfully teach us, power should always be distributed as democratically as possible. Making knowledge and research more accessible and breaking down barriers is one of the central concerns of Berlin Science Week 2023. Initiated by the Falling Walls Foundation, the eighth edition of the conference (01.-10.11.2023) will feature more than 200 events with over 500 speakers over ten days under this year’s slogan, “Creative science, precise art.” Participating events are spread out at various locations throughout the city. Headquarters, however, are the Natural History Museum and the Holzmarkt (where this year, for the first time, the festival will come to an end in a large, joint club night). The topics are as diverse as the locations: From lectures on the quality of human presence to experiments with colorful slime molds and mineralogical exhibits to the pressing questions of our time: human vs. artificial creativity or gender bias in programming and science journalism in the digital age. And these are just a few examples. The entire program is rich; there is so much to listen to, watch, experience, and participate in it’s hard to decide. This is undoubtedly also due to speakers ranging from artists like Martin Eder to scientists and designers like Gesche Joost and health ministers like Karl Lauterbach. There will also be a party at the end: The Berlin Science Week Club Night will take place on 10.11.2023 at Holzmarkt 25. So, Science Week is anything but nerdy. And in turbulent times like today, it is certainly more relevant than ever before.

FROM BERLIN TO KYIV & BACK AGAIN — A SPECIAL BREAKFAST SPOT AT THE WASSERTURM

FROM BERLIN TO KYIV & BACK AGAIN — A SPECIAL BREAKFAST SPOT AT THE WASSERTURM

In July 2023 a new cafe opened near the water tower on Kollwitzplatz: Sirene. Owners Lena Linkova and Aleksei Linkov, who have been working in the restaurant business since 2011, spent several years commuting between the cities of Kyiv and Berlin. They always wanted to open their own cafe, and now that they’ve found the right location, the team’s favorite breakfasts are making their debut. Our personal favorites are the fluffy Cottage Cheese Pancakes topped with caramel and walnuts – a typical Ukrainian breakfast specialty. Then there’s something for the hearty breakfasters: the Norwegian Egg Benedict or Turkish-style eggs accompanied by sourdough bread from Zeit für Brot. The coffee, meanwhile, comes from Berlin roastery Fjord – another one of our favorites. The interior was co-designed by architecture and design studio Rho Vision, and every detail has been carefully chosen to create a welcoming atmosphere. This place is all about community: the international team has made it their mission to establish themselves in the neighborhood as a welcoming place to gather and connect. So drink up, fill up and say hi!

A SLOW-BURN STORY OF FRIENDSHIP — CHRISTIAN PETZOLD’S “AFIRE” NOW STREAMING AT MUBI

A SLOW-BURN STORY OF FRIENDSHIP — CHRISTIAN PETZOLD’S “AFIRE” NOW STREAMING AT MUBI

It smells of dry pine forests, dusty sand and salty sea spray. Of cold lasagna and dark red wine, of warm wood and sticky tar, of exhaust fumes and paper. Christian Petzold’s new film Afire is so familiar and intimate that you feel immediately in the thick of it. In the midst of our incipient autumn gloom, these 103 minutes of summer melancholy captured on film hit that very sweet spot of longing, desire and nostalgia. Awarded the Silver Bear at the Berlinale, the film is now available exclusively on Mubi. It tells the story of two friends, Felix and Leon, who spend a month in a house by the Baltic Sea. We know the type: these are typical Berliners who come by car and, after a long detour, arrive at the holiday home feeling both excited and suspicious. There they unexpectedly meet Nadja, a seasonal worker doing her doctorate who also lives in the house and regularly and noisily sleeps there with the handsome lifeguard Devid.

In pastel images, a summer romance full of drama, wit and passion unfolds. Felix desires Devid, Leon desires Nadja, Nadja desires the poems of Heinrich Heine and maybe Leon too, but we won’t reveal that here yet. There is eating and working, writing, photographing and swimming, kissing and arguing. The young queer romance intensifies when Leon’s publisher shows up to discuss his new manuscript and the surrounding forest fires draw ever closer. Petzold’s brilliant character studies create an intimate portrait of five different young adults, full of dissecting emotion, clever wit, and subtle tension. Hans’ Fromm’s exceptionally detailed portraiture (cinematography) and Bettina Böhler’s unusual editing create a poetic visual language that supports the equally excellent acting performances of the lead actors. A cautious masterpiece made for long evenings with summer behind us and the next one still so far away.

THE INVISIBLE POETRY BEHIND TECHNOLOGY: POETICS OF ENCRYPTION CONFERENCE BY KW DIGITAL — RECOMMENDED BY ANNIKA VON TAUBE

THE INVISIBLE POETRY BEHIND TECHNOLOGY: POETICS OF ENCRYPTION CONFERENCE BY KW DIGITAL — RECOMMENDED BY ANNIKA VON TAUBE

Art and technology go great together in their curiosity for new things and striving to translate human imagination into something tangible. Yet art’s interest in technology tends to be mystically colored. It seems happy when it comes across as dark and inaccessible as possible, as a black box, black site or black hole. The more enraptured, the better. In the course of exploring this darkness, art can provide illuminating insights into the way technology works, but it can also lose itself in the occult fog. On 27 & 28.10.2023, the Poetics of Encryption conference hosted by KW Institute for Contemporary Art and organized by digital curator Nadim Samman will be devoted to art’s ambivalent relationship to technology, with a speaker lineup that includes artists Trevor Paglen and Jon Rafman and digital culture scholar Orit Halpern.

The venue is the former Delphi silent cinema in Weißensee. Once a place where the magic of technology created images as portals into another world, the venue could not be more fitting. The etymological origin of the word “encryption” goes back to the Greek verb kryptein (to conceal), crypt being a term for an underground vault in a sacred building. The encrypted is a hidden spiritual place, and a poetic thought. Those interested in AI, VR or NFTs are better off at other conferences: Poetics of Encryption is not about technology as an artistic medium, but rather the invisible infrastructure of the internet (server farms, network connections, hordes of data workers operating in secrecy, etc.) and how we might understand our own relationship to technology.

AN ICONIC HINTERHOF SHOP — CONVERSE X VOOSTORE GOLD STANDARD LINE

AN ICONIC HINTERHOF SHOP — CONVERSE X VOOSTORE GOLD STANDARD LINE

I’ve taken several small breaks on the wooden benches and stools at Voo Store after a shopping spree – almost always with a coffee in hand and the sun on my face. This courtyard address off Oranienstrasse has now been physically embroidered onto garments as part of the Converse x VooStore collection. The black and gray hoodies, along with matching sweatpants and T-shirt, are part of the Gold Standard Line from the US lifestyle brand. The fit is relaxed – it’s all about comfort here. In addition to the VooStore address, the embroidery on the hoodies and T-shirt also features another piece of the concept store: the iconic sage-colored framed window and fluorescent tube logo. The model for the campaign is Go Miyazaki, manager of VooDeli – the small food corner that complements the store with natural wines, fresh coffee, pastries and other goodies. On Instagram, he can be seen making a cappuccino in a black hoodie, jeans and the Chuck 70 Vintage Canvas in black. If that makes you want the look, the Gold Standard Line is available exclusively instore and online. Time to pay tribute to a favorite Berlin store!
