THREE ART EVENTS IN BRANDENBURG (ALMOST) — UCKERMARK-FESTIVAL, LANDSCHAFFTKUNST BIENNALE AND NEW NATIONAL PARK GALLERY

THREE ART EVENTS IN BRANDENBURG (ALMOST) — UCKERMARK-FESTIVAL, LANDSCHAFFTKUNST BIENNALE AND NEW NATIONAL PARK GALLERY

We all know the feeling: the city is too crowded, it’s time to get out of the city, you crave new things and nature, but you want to drive to Brandenburg only partially aimlessly. Here’s the solution: this weekend and next weekend, there are three opportunities to escape the hustle and bustle of the city but still soak up a bit of cultural life. Art autumn, but make it countryside quasi. In the northeast of Berlin, the 22 residents of Pinnow will host the “UM Festival 2023 – Connect“. On 09.-10.09.2023, there will be all-day literature, music, and art, and more from Kyoco TaniyamaBaal&Mortimer and Antonia Baum, plus talks and night hikes. Dear Uckermark, you always do it right. On to the west: Last weekend, the fourth “LANDschafftKUNST” biennial opened in the West Hävelland village of Neuwerder. This year, hosted by the bustling curatorial collective of the Berlin Spoiler-Zone, you can marvel (until 17.09.2023) at works by 16 Berlin artists, some interactive and all humorous. If you haven’t seen Niklas Apfel’s giant horse yet or have always wanted to be photographed behind a real Lilly Urbat, you’d better get out of town fast.

Next weekend, you can take a detour to northern Berlin. Strictly speaking, Karow is still part of the city area. But don’t worry; it feels far from the inner-city Art Week fuss. And that was precisely the idea behind the “New National Park Gallery.” “Aus Wilder Wurzel” is the name of the one-day(!) group show that will take place on 16.09.2023 in a small, free-standing, open pavilion. Olga Hohmann will read, and Friederike Feldmann, Daniel Hahn, Zebu, and others will also show their work. And what could be a better balance between city and country, calm and excitement, art and chaos?

FROM BEANS TO BARISTA-KNOW-HOW: COFFEE WEEK BERLIN IS COMING UP — JOIN THE CUPPINGS, TASTINGS & PARTIES

FROM BEANS TO BARISTA-KNOW-HOW: COFFEE WEEK BERLIN IS COMING UP — JOIN THE CUPPINGS, TASTINGS & PARTIES

You love coffee? Well, we love coffee, too. That’s no secret, I know – we write and post about it all the time. We even run our own Cee Cee Cafe. So when Philipp Reichel, founder of Vote Coffee and Kaffee Neun (and previously involved in the former Coffee Festival) approached us to ask if we’d be up for joining a new kind of coffee event, naturally we were hooked. So here we are now, one year later and made it: the Coffee Week Berlin is about to start. The idea: giving the exciting Berlin specialty coffee scene a new platform to get together, to share and exchange knowledge, create visibility and of course to simply share the love for coffee with you. So whether you’re simply enjoying your home brewing and all things from filter to latte art or you’re an expert leading the way to the perfect tastes and techniques, this event is for you. For this year’s premiere we’ve compiled an inspiring program happening across town at all those locations that make the caffeine magic happen: cafes and roasteries. Among the line-up is – first things first: the opening event! Your chance to pop by the Cee Cee Cafe if you haven’t made it yet. There’ll be drinks, music and good vibes.

After mingling with other caffeine enthusiasts, you’re invited to get serious about the essentials of every brew: join the talk on bean import at Flying Roasters. If you’re then ready to improve your skills, the “How to make the perfect espresso” lesson with the experts from La Marzocco is for you (thank you to La Marzocco and Oatly on this note – who are our partners for this very first edition!). And if you’d like to watch the real pros doing their magic: the German Aeropress Championship is happening at the Five Elephant Roastery. We hope you’re ready for some input from beans to brews and tastes to techniques. P.S. if you’re ready to upgrade to pro level: our partner of this first Coffee Week Berlin is La Marzocco who is giving away a coffee machine. Check our website to enter the competition.

CINEMATIC REALISM WITH MELANCHOLY AND GENIUS — IRA SACHS’ “PASSAGES” MASTERFULLY WEAVES MOMENTS INTO MEMORIES

CINEMATIC REALISM WITH MELANCHOLY AND GENIUS — IRA SACHS’ “PASSAGES” MASTERFULLY WEAVES MOMENTS INTO MEMORIES

A story about the complex dance of human existence – that’s the new film by American director Ira Sachs. Passages, presented by Mubi, is about the marriage of Tomas (Franz Rogowski) and Martin (Ben Whishaw), which plunges into crisis when Tomas falls in love with young teacher Agathe (Adèle Exarchopoulos) and begins a passionate affair with her. And of course, there is much more at stake. Everything is complicated, everything is connected, everything is metaphor. Ira Sachs, known for his films full of emotional finesse, seems to carefully peel away the layers that envelop his characters. The uncovering of the unspoken is perfectly orchestrated, aided by the sensitive performance of the three exceptionally, equally strong leading actors, whose every gesture and movement carries the story. This is captured by Josée Deshaies’ camerawork, which keenly frames the love triangle in smoky images – and the film’s settings: pulsating Paris (achingly beautiful as always) as well as the vastness of the rural scenery. Direction and camera seem to follow the rhythm of life – all of which makes “Passages” a thought-provoking film. It doesn’t give answers, but lives from the ambiguity of life. In a world that races forward, it reminds us that some things just last as long as they last.

Passages is out in theaters today (31.08.2023).

CASUAL FINE DINING IN AUSTRIA — DISCOVER CULINARY SPECIALTIES AWAY FROM BERLIN

CASUAL FINE DINING IN AUSTRIA — DISCOVER CULINARY SPECIALTIES AWAY FROM BERLIN

In need of a break from the rush of city life, but don’t want to miss out on great restaurants and culinary variety? How about a weekend trip to neighboring Austria – with lots of nature, fresh air and of course good food? At Haus Der Unterwirt in Tirol, for example, which is now run as a family business by three sisters and is a true refuge of tranquility. It’s like a journey to another time. And no wonder, since the house dates back to 1490. The dishes have also stood the test of time for generations: Marillenknödel (apricot dumplings), braised roast beef or rabbit with polenta, accompanied by fresh herbs from the garden and a view of the Kaiser Mountains – could you possibly ask for anything more than that? Or for a change of scenery: at the Naturidyll Hotel Landhofmühle in Burgenland, it’s the 100-year-old chestnut tree that sets the scene for the regional cuisine from the hotel’s own farm garden – accompanied by a glass of wine, birdsong and perhaps a good book. Minimalism as the new hedonism, so to speak. Seehotel Das Traunsee in Upper Austria is the pinnacle of this. What’s special: here, chef Lukas Nagl, who was just named Chef of the Year, even does without a menu. Instead, the award-winning chef presents his guests with a changing, organic regional selection of ingredients, from which the kitchen team conjures up individual dishes. And while the mountainous landscape is reflected in the water, your thoughts wander far away from everyday life and the question: What is really going on in Berlin right now? We could go on forever here, because of course Styria, Carinthia, Vienna or Lower Austria also have promising locations to offer.

FROM FOREST TO STAGE: “SHARED LANDSCAPES” PRESENTS THEATER, PERFORMANCES AND MUSIC IN NATURE

FROM FOREST TO STAGE: “SHARED LANDSCAPES” PRESENTS THEATER, PERFORMANCES AND MUSIC IN NATURE

What thoughts and images come to your mind when you think of a forest? Maybe a quiet walk through untouched nature? The beauty of unreachable intense green treetops? The earthy scent? All that, of course. But what about theater? What started in Switzerland and France can now be experienced in Germany: Shared Landscapes shows seven internationally conceived productions, connected by one place. Or rather: a forest, namely the Hangelsberger Forst, near Berlin. Curator Caroline Barneaud and director Stefan Kaegi (Rimini Protokoll) invite you to escape the urban chaos for a day (02.09., 03.09., 09.09., 10.09.2023) and turn to nature. A walk together in the green, where a new sense of time sets in as you walk among pine trees, lie on the forest floor or suddenly float over trees as if by magic. The works on display deal not only with our relationship to nature, but also with the fragility of the forest, the changing climate, limited resources, and an awareness of the dependence that comes with it. So, equipped with a backpack, sunscreen and bug spray, you’ll wander from place to place with a map, from performance to audio tour, from sound composition to media installation, taking on new perspectives towards nature. And perhaps, when someone asks you in the future what ideas you associate with a forest, your answer will be shaped by this experience.
