ZUSAMMENZIMMERN — THE FESTIVAL FOR CULTURE & SPACE

ZUSAMMENZIMMERN — THE FESTIVAL FOR CULTURE & SPACE

Hohenschönhausen has a special place in my heart. When we moved to Berlin in 1992, we lived on the same block as the charming high-rise building across from the famous Sportforum sports complex. And this is where it all began: swimming at the Orankesee, my high school graduation at the Gutenberg Oberschule, and most of all my love for architecture and Berlin city life. But back to Hohenschönhausen: the Berlin borough with a lot of undiscovered potential is finally coming into the spotlight. Here, old villas stand next to prefabricated “Plattenbauten”, industrial sites meet protected landscape areas – this “wild mix” and high-contrast juxtaposition creates a world of opportunity. The experts from the Stiftung Stadtkultur, the urban mediator Lukas Staudinger from Poligonal Berlin and the Hamburg-based architects from Projektbüro have also noticed this potential. The idea of a joint cause grew into a three-day event called ZusammenZimmern.Festival featuring performances, workshops, concerts and great food!

“Zimmer für dich” (Room for you) is the festival hub, a mobile structure designed by the architecture firm Projektbüro – designed as a space for experimentation, bringing people together, and everyday life. Projektbüro built the temporary wooden structure, which stood on Wartenberg Kirchplatz all summer and now will be the center of the festival weekend. The “Zimmer für dich” can be used by anyone who wants more space: for meeting, working, playing, reading or resting. Its use will be showcased as part of an exhibition with installations by Guerilla Architects and Alina Mann on and in the surrounding buildings; pole performance by the artist, DJane and dancer FRZNTE – here the architectural backdrop serves as both inspiration and stage. Berlin rapper Ebow, one of the exciting figures of post-migrant and queer rap, will kick off the event. In addition to FRZNTE, who grew up in Lichtenberg, a whole series of artists have their roots in the east of Berlin. These include the trap duo Ostberlin Androgyn, who spent their childhood on Prerower Platz in Hohenschönhausen, and the author Ahne, who will read from his autobiographical novel “Wie ich einmal lebte” (“How I Once Lived”) about his childhood and youth in the GDR. Also represented is the Hanoi Ensemble of the Lichtenberg Shostakovich Music School, which plays classical and popular Vietnamese music. Miranda Rigby and Paula Erstmann from the Stadtküche will take care of the culinary exploration of the city. Little ones are also welcome: the Cabuwazi children’s circus will be providing a cheerful program. So, let’s go to Hohenschönhausen!

FROM FARM TO MIND: THE “DIE GEMEINSCHAFT” SYMPOSIUM TO SET NEW FOOD STANDARDS

FROM FARM TO MIND: THE “DIE GEMEINSCHAFT” SYMPOSIUM TO SET NEW FOOD STANDARDS

In 2017, Berlin restaurants Nobelhart & Schmutzig and Horváth founded the initiative Die Gemeinschaft. With a seemingly simple goal: not only to rethink the relationship between food producers, restaurateurs and end consumers, but to rebuild it. Die Gemeinschaft wants to promote dialogue between ourselves and gastronomy through networking, education and exchange, in order to create a new food culture together and in dialogue. On September 11 and 12, 2023, the annual symposium will take place, bringing together all culinary stakeholders in the country for a better food system. On the first day, Gut Boltenhof near Fürstenberg in Brandenburg invites you to a personal and festive exchange. There will be discussions, round tables and workshops on relevant topics such as new ways of working or how to appreciate animal processing. The evening will conclude with “From Earth & Team” Head Chef Jan serving a three-course menu, which is limited to 80 people and can be booked as an add-on. Billy Wagner will provide the wine accompaniment with tasting bottles from his wine cellar.

The second day takes place in Berlin. Every hour there will be exciting ideas, places and people presenting their unique work: from the production of bee-friendly pressed honey, sourdough pasta, agroforestry tour in the Wilmars Gärten to cheese tasting. We find Die Gemeinschaft to be as ambitious as it is important in today’s world, where food is not universally appreciated and understanding of production processes is largely lacking. Networking, education and exchange are the tools. And at the end of the day, we all want to eat good food from quality sources in good company – and community, don’t we?

A NEW POP-UP ART SPACE FOR ART WEEK: TAYLA CAMP OPENS CAMP SPACE WITH ROXANNE KRUMM AND SKAI

A NEW POP-UP ART SPACE FOR ART WEEK: TAYLA CAMP OPENS CAMP SPACE WITH ROXANNE KRUMM AND SKAI

Since the 1990s, Mitte’s Brunnenstraße has been a place of upheaval, experimentation and beginnings. American curator Tayla Camp sensed this, too, and her newly founded pop-up gallery Camp Space will open on Wednesday (06.09.2023), inviting visitors on an odyssey of emotions and perceptions – namely those of the two artists Roxanne Krumm and Skai. The juxtaposition of these two perspectives is part of her ongoing pursuit of authenticity and emotional resonance, and is thus exemplary of the future programming. With Camp Space, she makes it her mission to make voices heard that are often underrepresented in the art world, focusing on the representation of BIPOCs and FLINTA*. “Is It No More Beautiful Than That?” describes the journey of two distinctive artists whose creative paths meet at the crossroads of disillusionment and soulful discovery. The title of the exhibition derives from a quotation from Thomas Mann’s story “Disillusionment”, which is linked to the core theme of the exhibition.

Roxanne Krumm’s brushstrokes weave an impressive tapestry of raw emotion. Her canvases are a play between light and shadow, a metaphor for the complexity of personal growth. Skai’s works complement the introspection of art with meditative introspection. With meticulous attention to detail, she creates complex worlds that engage viewers in contemplative narratives. Tayla Camp’s new Camp Space reflects her passion for art that crosses, explores and redefines boundaries. The gallery celebrates a diverse, youthful program that appeals – even in terms of price – to both seasoned collectors and newcomers. At a time when the art world is turning to new narratives, Camp Space is thus both a test and proof of the transformative power of expression. “Is It No More Beautiful Than That?” is on view through 02.10.2023. And as a note on transparency, our design team at Cee Cee Creative had the wonderful task of creating the visual identity of this new art space – creating our share of visibility and diversity in Berlin’s art landscape. Visibility is something we would like to create with this contribution as well, naturally, and we look forward to engaging in conversation at the opening.

DOTORI — THE ANJU BAR WHERE KOREAN TAPAS MEET NATURAL WINES, CASUAL AMBIENCE INCLUDED

DOTORI — THE ANJU BAR WHERE KOREAN TAPAS MEET NATURAL WINES, CASUAL AMBIENCE INCLUDED

The Korean Anju Bar Dotori is one of my latest favorites, not only because the wine and food are great, but also because Chi and Dax are the most welcoming hosts around. You may already know Chi from Personal Chef Berlin catering and her kimchi workshops, Dax from the supper clubs and pop-ups the two have been hosting together since last year. Far from crowded restaurant corners, past a music bar that promises the best of punk and rock in Weißensee, you probably only come this way purposefully. Dax stands at the blue counter and pours us natural wine and soju – Chi brings filled plates from the kitchen, because: “In Korea, you don’t drink without anju on the table!”. Anju are small dishes that you share with friends and family at the table alongside your drinks – similar to tapas. Korean pancakes with kimchi and scallions, Dotori Jelly, a traditional jelly made from acorn flour, along with sides like kimchi, roasted seaweed and a bowl of rice – at Dotori, the two have put together a “menu for two” of their anju favorites.

In addition, there are other dishes depending on the season: Dakgalbi, Korean Fried Chicken, Gimbap – the list goes on. And then there’s this insanely great wine list: here, wine doesn’t just taste mineral or dry, but is also “fun & glouglou,” “uplifting,” or just “really spectacular.” For non-wine drinkers, there’s also craft beer and lemonades. And of course: lots of soju. Dotori feels new, familiar, open and light. It’s the little things – as is often the case – that make this place so special: the wine list with its fun yet fitting descriptions, the two tipsy acorns on the menu that give you an inkling of how the evening might end, and the interior design you’ll want in your own home. If you’re looking for an alternative to your usual aperitivo evenings – far from crowded restaurant corners – then I highly recommend Dotori.

CEE CEE X UPWAY THE NEIGHBORHOOD MAP — TWO WHEELED AVENTURES FOR EXPLORING BERLIN BY BIKE & E-BIKE

CEE CEE X UPWAY THE NEIGHBORHOOD MAP — TWO WHEELED AVENTURES FOR EXPLORING BERLIN BY BIKE & E-BIKE

Time to saddle up! For the latest edition of our Neighborhood Map series, we’ve partnered with e-bike online shop Upway to curate a city guide that’s all about exploring Berlin on two wheels. Available from today (24.08.2023) at various spots in the city (check our Instagram for updates) for free, the map features over 50 Cee Cee tips for food, culture, fashion and fun that are well worth getting on your bike for. To help you plan, we’ve combined our picks into four cycling routes that include lots of our unique and yummy spots we love. The trips are intended to be breezy, gentle jaunts – breezier still if you’re on an electric bike. If you don’t have one already, that’s where Upway comes in. They are a refurbished electric bike specialist and provide a selection of around 1000 models, which are up to 60 percent cheaper than the original retail price. These models encompass well-known brands like Cube, Riese & Müller, and Haibike.

Once you’ve got your ride sorted, it’s time to pick a route. For those looking to carry more during their journeys, cargo bikes have become especially popular, making them super convenient, particularly during back-to-school season. Offering the best of three Berlin districts in one day, the City Hopper route includes a seasonal lunch and art in a former chapel of rest. Alternatively, for a trip to satisfy all the senses, the Culture Seeker route takes you to an architectural epicenter made of concrete and glass via a handmade scented candle shop. If you fancy embracing your artistic side, try the Crafty Saturday tour which focuses on creative hotspots with a few feel-good food destinations thrown in for good measure. Finally: leave Berlin behind entirely with the City Escape route, an all-day program in the Brandenburg countryside. With your journey planned, all you need to do is put foot to pedal and let the open road unfold.
