CINEMA UNDER THE SKY — OUR PICKS FOR OPEN AIR FILMS IN AUGUST

CINEMA UNDER THE SKY — OUR PICKS FOR OPEN AIR FILMS IN AUGUST

As we enter August, the fever of summer starts to give way to lethargy as the city empties out and the asphalt radiates heat into the night. It’s the perfect vibe for some open-air cinema, and a particularly nice place for it is Haus der Kulturen der Welt, which is celebrating the last days of the Wassermusik: Mississippi festival this weekend (05 & 06.08.2022). Curated by journalist and musician Detlef Diederichsen, the program of film, concerts and literature focuses on the dark legacy of American slavery, racism and music. Finishing up the festival is Roberto Minervini’s 2018 documentary “What You Gonna Do When the World’s on Fire?”, which will be shown this Saturday at 22h under the stars at HKW’s Westgarten. Meanwhile, over at Checkpoint Charlie you’ll find more political cinema throughout the month of August. Germany’s Federal Agency for Civic Education has assembled a program of films under the banner “Ungleich!” (“Unequal!”) that features some independent picks. Tonight’s (04.08) screenings include Sebastián Lelio’s “A Fantastic Woman” and “Borga” by York Fabian-Raabe.

If the former wasteland of Checkpoint Charlie leaves you a little cold, Yorck Kinos and Arte offer an alternative in the form of their summer film program in the courtyard of Schloss Charlottenburg and at the Kulturforum at Potsdamer Platz. Bringing cinema to architectural icons, the line-up features new releases like “Corsage” with Luxembourgish actor Vicky Krieps alongside classics like David Lynch’s “Mulholland Drive”. When the curtain falls and you make the journey home through the balmy night, your mind full of images, you remember the joy that is open air cinema.

HALF RETREAT, HALF RAVE — MINDFULNESS AND ECSTASY AT SACRED GROUND FESTIVAL

HALF RETREAT, HALF RAVE — MINDFULNESS AND ECSTASY AT SACRED GROUND FESTIVAL

If you love the close-to-nature feel of festivals but are less keen on the sleepless nights, next weekend’s Sacred Ground (11–14.08.2022) could be the one for you. Launched in 2015 by Australian singer RY X and Frank Wiedemann (who make up the duo Howling), the festival offers a mindful alternative to the big weekenders around Berlin. The aim was to do something sustainable: “We wanted to create an immersive retreat that would allow our community to dive into a world of magic, unwind from everyday life and create a place of sanctuary.” To this end, the festival supports small regional businesses and suppliers and avoids using plastic. The weekend is all about celebrating the sensual things in life: art, mindfulness, body-soul wellness and good food.

Musically, the program ranges from electronic music to indie and folk. Wiedemann (aka Âme)and RY X are playing the festival themselves, as are artists from Leipzig’s Institut für Zukunft like JakoJako, Neele, Perm and Peter Invasion. Other highlights include Peruvian singer and producer Sofia Kourtesis, Bulgarian producer Kink and Sebastian Mullaert. Held two hours from Berlin at Klingmühle in Brandenburg, Sacred Ground also includes an extensive mindfulness programme: breathwork sessions, yoga, meditation, creative workshops and tea ceremonies bring moments of peace and quiet as you move between the stages and the onsite lake.

JAPANESE INSPIRED CUISINE, SUSHI SPECIALTIES AND COCKTAILS SERVED WITH BAUHAUS FLAIR — NOVEMBER

JAPANESE INSPIRED CUISINE, SUSHI SPECIALTIES AND COCKTAILS SERVED WITH BAUHAUS FLAIR — NOVEMBER

Same name, different vibe: November is the restaurant that has taken over the eponymous cafe that previously stood on Husemannstraße in Prenzlauer Berg. Run by hospitality group The Catch Family, the eatery now serves high-end Japanese-inspired cuisine with plenty of seafood imported fresh from Spain and Japan. The scallops, which are served with grapefruit and ginger, are particularly impressive, while the turbot with miso and shiitake butter is great to share. Sushi fans should try the Kim nigiris, carpaccios and tartar rolls from chef Ruslan Kim. If you are vegetarian you’ll also be catered for: the deep-fried oyster mushrooms and edamame hummus and broccoli with peanut sauce make for captivating starters and mains, respectively. The drinks menu includes 11 options (November being the 11th month of the year) created by bar chef Vasily Sapunkov, who fuses European and Japanese flavors with finesse. A classic gin and tonic is refined with shiso, and the Moscow Mule is replaced by a Tokyo Mule with kaffir, rum, yuzu, ginger and lemongrass. The brasserie is open until midnight, giving you plenty of time to feast your way through the entire menu. Choose a table on the plant-filled terrace or in the warm oak-clad interior and start sampling.

PANEL TALK, RAFFLE AND GIN: SHAPING TOMORROW WITH CERAMIC ARTIST JÉRÉMY BELLINA FROM MONKEY 47 X CEE CEE

Jérémy Bellina, Frenchman by birth and Berliner by choice, is the current darling of the ceramic world. He came to Berlin almost five years ago for love and has since swapped his job in management for pottery. Learn how a hobby evolved into a new profession and a studio in Berlin, why modeling with clay continues to inspire Bellina and how he uses it to engage with his 80,000 fans on Instagram. You can discover this and more at the Monkey 47 x Cee Cee event “Shaping Tomorrow” next Wednesday (03.08.2022). Monkey 47 and Cee Cee will host the evening’s panel talk with the artist at Zum Wilden Affen in the heart of Kreuzberg. Starting at 20h you’ll have the chance to listen to our conversation – chilled drinks and nice ambiance included. Kate from the Cee Cee Content Team will lead the discussion and take your questions on design philosophy, the form and function of Bellina’s works, clay hacks and success strategies. Look forward to an evening talking about the artist’s modern, playful and simply beautiful ceramic pieces and new ideas with a cold gin on the rocks. FYI: there will be more workshops, concerts and talks in cooperation with Monkey 47 at the Wilden Affen until 11.08.2022.
