WHERE TO BRUNCH THIS WEEKEND: JAPANESE BITES AT CEE CEE CAFE

WHERE TO BRUNCH THIS WEEKEND: JAPANESE BITES AT CEE CEE CAFE

Some readers may already know that we have started our very own Cee Cee (pop-up) Cafe in an extremely central neighborhood just a stone’s throw from the Jewish Museum. We will be hosting a rotating weekend-only brunch series and we’re excited to announce our first menu. Brought to you by a team of expat foodies from Japan living in Berlin, the cafe will be showcasing Japanese dishes with a delicious Western twist. Our current sweet and savory brunch specials include a Kakuni Burger with melt-in-your-mouth juicy Japanese braised pork belly, karashi-mustard mayo sauce and a side of edamame. Or, for a summery and light option, there’s a soba salad with cold Japanese buckwheat noodles on top of leafy greens tossed in aromatic homemade sesame oil dressing. Then there’s the vegan onigiri combo which includes rice balls, pickles and a bowl of cold summer miso soup that’s a perfect dish for warm days. If you like to start your day with something sweet, we recommend the toasted matcha cake bread with matcha cream and seasonal berries and, for those who like their brunch a bit boozy, some not-so-classic drinks. There’s the Yuzullini (think Bellini but with yuzu-honey), and homemade lemonade that might remind you of a popular Japanese milk-based soft drink known as Calpico. If you are looking for a brunch that serves up fresh flavors, this is your chance!

WELDED BRACELETS, CHAINS & RINGS — PERMANENT JEWELRY BY SISTER

WELDED BRACELETS, CHAINS & RINGS — PERMANENT JEWELRY BY SISTER

If you love jewelry but tend to leave it lying around, then you should stop by Sister. Since the beginning of June 2023, founder Antonia has been offering “permanent jewelry” in her small shop in Schillerkiez. So what is permanent jewelry? It’s simple: instead of fiddling with the clasp on your necklace or bracelet, you have the jewelry welded on so you can wear your new pieces constantly until you don’t feel like wearing them anymore. You can choose between ten different gold and silver chains – from fine, classic models to more unusual ones like the ‘paperclip’ design. For bracelets, chains and rings, the welding itself takes no longer than fifteen minutes – enough time to try on the non-permanent jewelry in the store. Sister has been around a while: Antonia has been in Kienitzer Straße with her jewelry – which is made in Cyprus – since 2018. By selling it, she doesn’t just want to support local craftsmanship in her homeland – it’s also a way for her to stay connected to her birthplace and celebrate her roots with others.

Antonia knows all of her makers personally. What she values most is talking to them on the phone – for example Panikos, whose ceramics Antonia also sells in the store. He tells her about the birds in his garden, his early morning laps in the water and the neighbors who occasionally visit him in his studio. Or Panagiotis, one of the brothers who makes the jewelry – he greets her on the phone with “Ela kori” (Hello daughter) and asks if she’s been sleeping in the middle of the day again. The jewelry pieces all have their own unique stories: according to legend, Aphrodite was also born in Cyprus – she is the namesake of Sister and represents the connection between the manufacturers, the jewelry and herself.

A VIEW WITH A FEELING — DRINKS, TUNES & TASTES AT STUDIO 14, THE RBB ROOFTOP LOUNGE

A VIEW WITH A FEELING — DRINKS, TUNES & TASTES AT STUDIO 14, THE RBB ROOFTOP LOUNGE

About once a year I take the U-Bahn to Theodor-Heuss-Platz, where emerging in the warm summer twilight, I sigh: “Oh, West Berlin.” The sky is grey-purple and red neon lights glow as spots of light shine from cars darting across the architectural mix. The scene evokes a mood that resembles how Todd Hito’s photos might look if they were taken in the city. I think how I myself stand in the middle of it all – as if life were a film where you see yourself from above. My delight is all the greater when I discover Studio 14. This rooftop lounge at state broadcaster rbb’s headquarters has a view that extends far beyond West Berlin. Located on top of the studios, the location is lots of things: rooftop bar, restaurant, production facility, concert hall, event location and – above all – insider tip. It would probably be enough just to head up to the 14th floor of the studios every now and then to look down on the streets and imagine yourself your own Berlin soap opera. But there are more surprises: excellent drinks, exclusive lounge concerts, alternating DJ sets and small plates. The best thing about it is that it opens at 16h every day. The second best thing is that the menu is full of classics with a twist (think oh-so-German Senfeier but served up tapas style). The new and old West, brought together above the clouds (well, almost). If you’re longing for radio, city lights and drinks in fine glasses, we urge you to go West, go up and breathe out: “Oh West Berlin…”!

THE ART WORLD’S URGE FOR AFTER WORK DRINKS — ARTIST CEM A. IN CONVERSATION WITH KOLJA REICHERT AT THE BERLINISCHE GALERIE

THE ART WORLD’S URGE FOR AFTER WORK DRINKS — ARTIST CEM A. IN CONVERSATION WITH KOLJA REICHERT AT THE BERLINISCHE GALERIE

What is a meme? A joke? An observation? A commentary? A work of art? First of all, it’s digital, ephemeral, and often very specific. Or is it? Tomorrow evening (06.16.2023), artist Cem A. and art critic and curator Kolja Reichert will discuss just that – and a whole lot more – as part of Art After WorkJung & Artig, the young Friends of the Berlinische Galerie, are hosting a conversation with Cem A., who may be better known to many art enthusiasts as @freeze_magazine. But Cem A.’s latest work went beyond the net. The intervention, called “Thank you for your understanding”, took place online on the museum’s Instagram channel and on-site with an installation in the front courtyard while the Berlinische Galerie was closed in April and May. It is currently on view at the Berlinische Galerie in their “207 sqm Space for Action and Cooperation”. Citing meme culture, Cem A. questions the role of the museum in general and the digital and public space in particular, examining the critical capacity of the public and experimenting with their critique, acceptance and humor. Following the event, you can continue to chat informally and make new connections over drinks, with musical accompaniment provided by Lumbung Radio (yes, that’s right, the one from Documenta).
