31 DAYS OF FREE ART ACROSS BERLIN — PROJECT SPACE FESTIVAL

31 DAYS OF FREE ART ACROSS BERLIN — PROJECT SPACE FESTIVAL

Well rested? Good: you’ll need some energy in the tank for the Project Space Festival. The 31-day program gives you the opportunity to visit art spaces across the city for free for the whole month of August. Each day is dedicated to a different exhibition space, with artists and curators given 24 hours to show what makes their work special. Things kick off on Monday (01.08.2022) at Neukölln’s Xanadu, a film-focused newcomer to the city’s culture scene. The following day, the team from Wedding venue New Fears – also newly opened – will take over the baton, showing works that are part choreography, part visual art. We’re penciling in a trip to Mp43 in Marzahn on 14.08, when curator Carola Rümper will be presenting artist pair Sopheak Sao and Sreymao Sao from Cambodia. In addition to brick and mortar project spaces, there are also mobile concepts to check out, including CCCCCOMA and Beton, who are showing works in public spaces. The program concludes on 31.08 at Neun Kelche in Weissensee, where Barbora Zentková and Julia Gryboś will consider the consequences of living in a fatigued society. A fitting end to a full-on art marathon.

STORMING THE IVORY TOWER — BREAKING DOWN MUSICAL BARRIERS AT A L’ARME FESTIVAL

STORMING THE IVORY TOWER — BREAKING DOWN MUSICAL BARRIERS AT A L’ARME FESTIVAL

Berlin is the capital of improvisation in many fields. From 10-13.08.2022, that will also include music with the tenth edition of A L’Arme Festival at Radialsystem and Silent Green. Known for its broad range of genres, ranging from avant-garde jazz to improvisation, collaboration and other varieties of experimental music, the festival for “everything but the status quo and false certainties” will fill four evenings, some of them late into the night. Part of the program will include international premieres such as “Jazz Codes” by U.S. singer Moor Mother, or that of drummer Katharina Ernst and her band collective Ventil. Exploring and redefining the boundaries of genre is part of the event’s tradition, and true to form this year’s program ranges from poetic, bizarre sounds from everyday life and electronics by the great Claire Rousay to a revival of the album “Blackjazz” by the Norwegian avant-garde metal band Shining. Their album was one of the founding inspirations behind the festival, and it’s a work that punctuates this ten-year anniversary celebration. Music becomes art and art becomes music with the installation “Static Arrival” by New Yorker duo Nick Dunston and Alex Schweder, who combine sounds, light and fog to gently usher in the evenings. You can satisfy your desire to discuss the diverse program in the Anniversary Lounge before the concerts, fueled by a glass of low intervention, biodynamic wine.

AN ARTY DAY TRIP TO THRILL ALL THE SENSES — E-WERK LUCKENWALDE SUMMER FESTIVAL

AN ARTY DAY TRIP TO THRILL ALL THE SENSES — E-WERK LUCKENWALDE SUMMER FESTIVAL

One of the most exciting art venues at the minute isn’t in Kreuzberg or Mitte, but 30km south of city limits in the small town of Luckenwalde in Brandenburg. In 2019, artist Pablo Wendel and curator Helen Turner transformed a former lignite-fired power plant into a center for contemporary art that produces its own sustainable electricity. The exhibition venue would be worth a trip for the imposing industrial architecture alone, but it’s the ambitious program that makes a visit there so special. A great time to check it out is this Saturday (30.07.2022), when the Power Nights exhibition series comes to a close with a finissage and summer party. Besides the E-Werk, you can also visit other architectural sights in Luckenwalde including the listed Bauhaus-style municipal swimming pool.

The art already begins on the journey from Südkreuz: “smell researcher” Sissel Tolaas, whose works are always a surprise, has created a multi-sensory piece with choreographer Isabel Lewis that you can experience on the train. Arriving in Luckenwalde, events continue at the former hat factory designed by Erich Mendelsohn, where the full performance unfolds with smells, movements and sounds. The program also includes Romanian DJ duo Khidja and artist Tabita Rezaire, who presents her film Womb Wisdom. The E-Werk succeeds where many venues fail, putting Berlin’s periphery on the art map without losing sense of place.

FARM-TO-FORK FOOD FROM TOP CHEFS — SIX-COURSE DINNER FROM MEROLD AND NANUM AT THE ACKERPULCO ORGANIC FARM

FARM-TO-FORK FOOD FROM TOP CHEFS — SIX-COURSE DINNER FROM MEROLD AND NANUM AT THE ACKERPULCO ORGANIC FARM

An alfresco dinner in Acapulco – the ultimate tropical dream, right? But don’t book flights to the Pacific coast just yet, because this getaway is less far-flung than you might think. The Ackerpulco we’re talking about is in Brandenburg, among the arable fields of Alt-Madlitz. For one weekend only (05 & 06.08.2022), the organic vegetable farm will serve as the location for a six-course dinner co-hosted by the fine dining fermenters at Merold and Korean restaurant Nanum. The restaurants’ founders, Jonas Merold and Jinok Kim-Eicken, are teaming up to serve a vegan menu on a dining table right in the middle of a Brandenburg pasture. Three dishes are from Jonas, three are from Jinok – all can be paired with wine if you want. Expect fresh summer veg, fermented flavors and all-round culinary excellence. Also: while you are there, you can add on a visit to another organic farm, the neighboring Gut&Bösel, where the team offer tours of their advanced cultivation methods. It is here that Merold is hosting a few other dinner pop-ups, including tomorrow and Saturday (29 & 30.07.2022). Check the website for more details and bag yourself a ticket for a tasty farm-to-fork escape.

FEED THE PONY X TREAT — REGIONAL-SEASONAL POP-UP CUISINE AND SPECIALTY WINES IN SCHILLERKIEZ

FEED THE PONY X TREAT — REGIONAL-SEASONAL POP-UP CUISINE AND SPECIALTY WINES IN SCHILLERKIEZ

A good mood is guaranteed at Treat, not least because of the big gold smiley emblazoned on the front of the Neukölln wine shop. The logo also features on Treat’s glasses, in which they serve the likes of low intervention and biodynamic orange wine from the Czech Republic and Portuguese Pet Nats (see our article from 2020). Now owner Julia Böning has a new “treat” in store: she’s invited the team from Feed the Pony to cook for a series of weekend dinner nights. In the kitchen is Hannah, who worked at nearby Palsta and Brasserie Lamazère, while up front is Marty, who brings expert knowledge and lots of passion (Maja, the third in the group, is currently on parental leave). The trio share a passion for seasonal, regional ingredients of the finest quality. Dinner is served on small plates and bowls, with home-baked dark rye bread and whipped creamy butter on the side. The refreshing summer tomato salad comes with a dressing of rhubarb and elderberry, while the vichyssoise soup is given a green makeover with crunchy peas and fish from Stechlinsee – easily the best dish of the evening.

That said, the fermented potato waffles with crème fraîche and unripe gooseberries are a fun, surprising standout. For dessert you’ll find a slimline spin on Topfenknödel served with slivers of almond on top. From a culinary standpoint it’s all great, but it’s the partnership between Treat and Feed the Pony that’s where the magic happens. Treat customers had long been requesting a food menu to go with their wine – a wish that has now been fulfilled. Whether you class it as food with wine or wine with food doesn’t matter – both have equal billing here. The Treat team are there to guide you through the evening’s wine list: discovering Portuguese mousse sparkling wine was a highlight of the evening, as was the “Aparte Amber Orange” with its funky flavors. In short, the food and drink wowed us – as did the personable team’s incredible knowledge and expertise. We went home with grins as wide as the smiley on the window.
