BLACK CINEMA FROM THE U.S AT BABYLON BERLIN — 30 FILMS AND CLASSICS ON THE BIG SCREEN

BLACK CINEMA FROM THE U.S AT BABYLON BERLIN — 30 FILMS AND CLASSICS ON THE BIG SCREEN

Curator David DMP Moore’s Black U.S. Cinema film series, which Babylon is showing this week and next (until 17.05.2023), offers an impressive selection of Black cinema. The program is packed with talent (both on-screen and behind camera) and illuminates Black American history through real-life and fictional heroes. You can jump right in tonight (11.05.2023) with the touching documentary “I Am Not Your Negro” from Raoul Peck (2017). The basis of this cinematic collage is the unfinished manuscript “Remember this House” by U.S. writer James Baldwin (1924-87), who describes white racism in American society and the situation of people of color in the United States. Meanwhile, “Boyz n the Hood”  (1991) from John Singleton heads up tomorrow’s program (12.05.2023). The film is set in the notorious South Central district of Los Angeles and follows the story of three young people as they contend with gangs, drugs and violence. Rapper Ice Cube is just one of the figures to feature in the film. The selection also takes us back to 1958 with “Escape in Chains” (14.05) which tells the story of Noah (Sidney Portier) and Joker (Tony Curtis) who overcome racial prejudice while on the run. Finally, Spike Lee’s “BlackkKlansman” (2018) is based on a true story: Ron Stallworth (John David Washington), a detective, embarks on a mission to infiltrate a chapter of the Ku Klux Klan in 1970s Colorado Springs. With a packed line-up, the series is a chance to see important films that simply must be seen.

MUSICAL TRIBUTE TO KREUZBERG’S CHAOTIC HUB — KOTTI ISLAND DISC RELEASE NIGHT AT TRESOR

MUSICAL TRIBUTE TO KREUZBERG’S CHAOTIC HUB — KOTTI ISLAND DISC RELEASE NIGHT AT TRESOR

Kottbusser Tor may not be geographically in the middle of Kreuzberg, but it is its undisputed center. U-Bahn above, U-Bahn below, roundabout all around, pavements full of pigeon droppings. It is the unwashed navel of the city, a gateway to limbo and paradise at the same time. If Orpheus were to descend to the underworld in Berlin, he would do it at Kotti. There are plenty of songs the poet could sing about this place: from Ideal to Peter Fox, Kreuzberg’s hub of interchange has inspired countless musicians. Now an entire album is dedicated to it, and it is anything but a mere collection of samples: Kotti Island Disc from producer Cecilia Tosh will be released tomorrow (12.05.2023) as an online release on Tresor Records. The release follows the exhibition of the same name that Tosh brought to Kotti and its surroundings in January.

Field recordings and observations of Kotti are central to the work. The result is ten tracks – musical interpretations of the place in all its multifaceted fantasy. Ten very different artists take you on an auditory journey through Kottbusser Tor, a snapshot of an urban island whose change seems faster and more constant than anywhere else in the world. The result is music that almost seems like a photograph. It brings the city into your headphones, and your legs to the city: tonight (11.05.) at 23h is the release night at Globus (Tresor). Participating artists include: Zettka, Ray Kajioka, Cecilia Tosh, Philipp Gorbachev, Jon Hester, Sofie Superflyin Jackson, .VRIL, Kat Davids, Rocko Garoni and Solid Traveller.

FRENCH BISTRONOMIE IN KREUZBERG — MASTAN COMBINES TRADITIONAL METHODS WITH MODERNITY

FRENCH BISTRONOMIE IN KREUZBERG — MASTAN COMBINES TRADITIONAL METHODS WITH MODERNITY

If you bring upscale cuisine and casual bistro character together, it results in what is known as a “bistronomie” restaurant – a place where good cuisine doesn’t have to be accompanied by a fancy atmosphere and expensive prices. Yann Mastantuono opened Mastan, his small bistronomie restaurant located between Mehringdamm and Südstern, in April 2023. The concept is all about fine food, casual get-togethers and affordable prices – in other words, everything you could want on a night out! Born in Marseille, Yann grew up with the cuisine of the South of France. Later he moved to Paris, where he gained his first insights into first-class bistro cuisine and honed his technical skills as head chef at Le Verre Volé sur Mer and Aux Lyonnais – Alain Ducasse. Yann then moved to Berlin on account of the openness and joie de vivre of the people here. “They see through glitz and want honesty,” he says.

When you enter Mastan, you are greeted warmly and immediately understand the concept from the interior: an inviting wooden counter right at the entrance just like in French bistros, and small seating areas at the windows covered with white tablecloths. At the counter you can relax with a glass of wine (a selection of organic and natural wines from France, Germany and Austria) and sample typical cheese and sausage specialities. Then, if you’re still hungry, you can order à la carte. Here you will find the likes of a cream of pea soup with fresh goat’s cheese and Pimentón de la vera, veal tartare with crisp Granny Smith apple, tarragon and Cedri lemon gel with slivers of wild oysters hidden inside. For the main course there’s guinea fowl with wild garlic, white asparagus and bacon, or a Mediterranean fish soup with gurnard, fennel and rouille. For dessert, you can’t miss out on the cheese platter, which Yann gets right next door at Les Epicuriens in the Marheineke indoor market. Direct contact with producers is important to the chef, and he is keen to discover the best regional products. He also doesn’t want to miss out on contact with his guests: he likes to leave the kitchen in the evening to greet diners and share a glass of wine. You can spend hours at Mastan without having to go all out. It might get noisy and crowded at times, but that’s the charm of a French bistro. Combining delicious, unpretentious dishes and fine-dining cooking techniques, this place will have you parting ways on a high: Merci et à très bientôt!

FROM SOUL AND HOUSE TO JAZZ AND BLUES — XJAZZ! BRINGS MORE THAN 60 ACTS TO KREUZBERG

FROM SOUL AND HOUSE TO JAZZ AND BLUES — XJAZZ! BRINGS MORE THAN 60 ACTS TO KREUZBERG

It looks like this: wandering the streets of Kreuzberg, dipping in an out of venues – into a club where playful funk music moves the crowd to dancing, then to a church, where one man’s voice moves smoothly through R&B tones, leaving watchers spellbound against the arching walls. XJazz! is something special – the festival takes place in Kreuzberg next week (08–14.05.2023) for its ninth year. The venues are within walking distance of each other, and while some shows offer single tickets, most are best enjoyed with a day or festival pass, encouraging the spirit of discovery.

The line-up includes a mix of jazz genres, such as modern jazz, blues and more, but also highlights soul, funk, broken beat, disco and more. There’s the legendary Roy AyersAlabaster DePlume’s mix of spiritual-jazz and poetry, south London hip-hop star Nadia Rose, and a huge line-up of Berlin’s most exciting acts such as neo-soul AKA Kelzz and Afro-Caribbean soul beats by Sera Kalo. Working together with collectives, labels and individuals to curate the program, XJazz! is elevating more than 60 acts in their week-long program. There’s the Broken Beat night curated by Moses Yoofee, the Energy Exchange Records night and the Expressions Opening Ceremony night curated by Dhanesh Jayaselan with A Song for You and the Expressions Ensemble. We also especially recommend the “Artists! In Exile” conference, which is helping displaced artists find their place professionally and emotionally in Berlin in collaboration with the Goethe Institut. The acts are chosen, now it’s up to you to curate your own festival experience…

DESIGN BETWEEN HEAVEN AND EARTH — FURNITURE, FASHION AND JEWELRY AT THE BLICKFANG DESIGN FAIR AT THE KANTGARAGEN

DESIGN BETWEEN HEAVEN AND EARTH — FURNITURE, FASHION AND JEWELRY AT THE BLICKFANG DESIGN FAIR AT THE KANTGARAGEN

Didn’t make it to this year’s Salone del Mobile in Milan but still dreaming of inspiration for high-quality, handmade and hip design objects? We have a solution for you – and it’s located in an architectural highlight to boot: this weekend (05-07.05.2023), the Blickfang international design fair is coming to Berlin – more precisely to the Stilwerk KantGaragen on Kantstraße in Charlottenburg. You could scarcely think of a better venue for such an event: this former multi-storey car park is an architectural gem, designed in the style of 1930s new objectivity. The fair takes place on its upper floors, and is all about discovering iconic design pieces while talking to designers. You can stroll, browse and marvel: at the custom-made furniture by Leipzig Werkstätten made from regional, sustainable woods, or the modular, progressive S4 solid wood shelving system by Nostudio (birch or oak? Tough decision). Or how about the timeless, simple bags by Zamt, whose classic elegance catches the eye and feels fantastic?

If you’re good for bags but still can’t find the perfect bed, maybe Jannis Ellenberger has something for you: his label of the same name specializes in beds made with sustainable oak and lots of character. Is the bed just for guests? Then maybe it’s worth taking a look at Jakob Schenk – specifically at his Freistil 164, which is the sofa bed of our dreams. If you’re on the lookout for fashion, you should definitely stop by the Berlin fashion label Susumu Ai, where traditional Japanese fabrics and kimono patterns blend with the European zeitgeist. But that’s far from everything: there is unique furniture, fashion, jewelry and home accessories – all lovingly made, all unorthodox and just waiting to become the next eye-catcher in your living room, wardrobe or – failing that – your dreams.
