HAFERKORN & SAUERBREY — CUTE CHRISTMAS CARDS, ELEGANT WRAPPING AND DESIGN-FORWARD STATIONERY

HAFERKORN & SAUERBREY — CUTE CHRISTMAS CARDS, ELEGANT WRAPPING AND DESIGN-FORWARD STATIONERY

Need some finishing touches to match your carefully-chosen Christmas gifts? Berlin-based brand Haferkorn & Sauerbrey offer a tasteful solution with their seasonal cardspapersribbons and gift tags. Designed in-house, the online collection was founded in 2008 by designers Romy Haferkorn and Miriam Sauerbrey, who found they couldn’t connect with the stationery styles on the market. Having previously designed for brands and magazines, the pair joined forces to create their own stationery and greeting card designs. As well as papers, the ever-growing collection includes some great gifts: vibrant notebooks, Bauhaus-inspired prints and even silk blend scarves. And if you know a friend who needs help organizing – or if that person is you – the brand’s beautiful calendars and planners will help make 2022 run smoothly. You can browse the full range online.

FUSS-FREE CYCLING — ALL-INCLUSIVE E-BIKE SUBSCRIPTIONS FROM DANCE

FUSS-FREE CYCLING — ALL-INCLUSIVE E-BIKE SUBSCRIPTIONS FROM DANCE

Are you one of those people that cycles all through the Berlin winter? If so, I have full respect for you! I myself have a little helper to supply my strength and endurance: an e-bike from Dance. These battery-powered two-wheelers are lightweight and make even the toughest of journeys much easier. Responsible for the sleek designs is Berlin-based Dance GmbH, which entered the market in September 2021 with a fresh idea: a monthly e-bike subscription with all servicing included. If something goes wrong with your ride the team will fix it, taking all the hassle out of your commute. The concept is flexible, letting you test out an e-bike over a longer period of time: for me it is serving as my winter ride, saving me the cost of the monthly BVG subscription. What about the bike itself? Well if you still think of cumbersome wheels and bulky frames when you think of e-bikes, the Dance models will change your mind. Made for the city, these shimmering silver-purple bikes are sporty and come with thick tyres that are perfect for winter.

Unlocking and locking the bike is done via the (also purple-hued) app, which takes some getting used to but soon becomes second nature. The matching purple socks that come with the bike are also great for showing off as you zoom up hills even after the most draining of work days. While you do still need to pedal, the bike offers a real electric boost and even lets you out-accelerate cars at the traffic lights. I’m now used to gliding past other road users as I head effortlessly to my next appointment. A rocket for rent – who knew?!

ROTHOLZ STUDIO SALE — SHOP SUSTAINABLE FASHION WITH DISCOUNTS, SAMPLES AND ONE-OFFS

ROTHOLZ STUDIO SALE — SHOP SUSTAINABLE FASHION WITH DISCOUNTS, SAMPLES AND ONE-OFFS

If you need help finding fashion-forward Christmas gifts, why not just swap cities for the day? Potsdam may be Berlin’s little sibling, but it’s home to a clothing brand you’d be wrong to overlook: Rotholz. Located in an elegant glass-fronted store in the west of the city, the label is known for its sustainable casualwear: clean-cut knits, sweats, jackets and caps that are made from climate-friendly materials. You can check out the whole range – and get some pretty great discounts – by heading to the brand’s Studio Sale this Saturday, 18.12.2021. For one day only, the team are offering up to 30 percent off the current collection, which includes elegant overshirts and over jackets and a range of minimalist pullovers for both men and women. The label was launched in 2008 – long before sustainability was on-trend – to create responsibly-sourced fashion without sacrificing on style.

As for the specifics: the knitwear pieces are manufactured in Germany from organic merino wool – indeed all the items are made in the EU (there’s specific sourcing info for all the pieces on the website). Besides the latest cuts, Saturday’s event will be a last chance to shop pieces from previous collections as well as samples and other one-offs at reduced prices. And since it’s Christmas, there will be mulled wine and music to bring the festive vibes – so take your time and make a day of it.

A FEAST FOR THE SENSES — DINNER EVENT INSPIRED BY EASTERN EUROPE FROM FORTUNA FOREST

A FEAST FOR THE SENSES — DINNER EVENT INSPIRED BY EASTERN EUROPE FROM FORTUNA FOREST

It’s an evening I will never forget: a dreamy-mystical picnic in the middle of a forest, accompanied by ethereal sounds, waving ribbons in rustling trees and delicious cuisine in tiffin boxes. This was back in the summer of 2021, and my hosts were Yulia Roth and Laura Iriondo from Fortuna Forest. Together they create food and drink concepts in collaboration with artists, and luckily for us they have a dinner coming up this Sunday, 19.12.2021. Instead of a picnic in the forest (because, well, winter), the dinner will be held indoors, though I’m sure it will be just as magical. Wherever the location, the duo always manage to create unusual and inspiring atmospheres.

This time, diners will be joined by musicians Propinquity with a dreamy set and Alizée Lenox on guitar. Hosted in a spacious loft, the event is billed as an “Eastern European extravaganza”, with a theme inspired by the 1966 Czechoslovakian film “Daisies”. I know that the food will be fantastic, since Laura – who also runs the catering service Taube Grau – always gets it right with her contemporary, fresh and light cuisine. And there are sure to be well-selected natural wines and bold drinks from Yulia. It’s set to be (another) evening to remember.

VOILÀ — MICHELIN-STARRED CUISINE FROM BERLIN AND BEYOND SERVED ON YOUR OWN DINING TABLE

VOILÀ — MICHELIN-STARRED CUISINE FROM BERLIN AND BEYOND SERVED ON YOUR OWN DINING TABLE

The essential ingredients for a Friday night in: candles, wine, music – and Michelin-starred cuisine. Now if you’re wondering how you are going to create a world-class meal in your own kitchen, not to worry. Like everything else these days, you can simply get it brought to your door – in this case courtesy of Voilà. Launched in 2021 by former Foodora employee Julius Wiesenhuetter and business partner Florian Berg, the Berlin start-up has partnered with dozens of top restaurants to bring haute cuisine home. The concept of fine dining to-go is nothing new in Berlin: since the pandemic, leading eateries like Restaurant Tim Raue and Einsunternull have experimented with high-end food delivery. What makes Voilà different is that you can sample cuisine from restaurants all over Germany and beyond. And so while you can order dinner from local legends like Cookies Cream and Zenkichi, you can also taste two-star cuisine from restaurants further afield like Ox & Klee in Cologne and Opus V in Mannheim. The founding pair expect the restaurant line-up – which currently extends to Parisian eatery Sola – to expand further.

This being the festive season, a number of the restaurants are serving up Christmas specials including Hamburg’s Dim Sum Haus, who are shipping out their showstopping Peking duck (some say it’s the best in Germany) for festive dinners at home. Delivery of the food is via post: once you place your order, your meal is prepared and partially cooked by the chefs before being packed in smart sealed containers to keep it fresh and juicy. At home, all you need to do is reheat the dishes according to the instructions and serve. As to whether you reveal to your guests that their dinner came in the post: well, we’ll leave that up to you…
