FROM ELEGANT TO FUNKY — HANDMADE JEWELRY PIECES FROM THREE BERLIN DESIGNERS

FROM ELEGANT TO FUNKY — HANDMADE JEWELRY PIECES FROM THREE BERLIN DESIGNERS

Jewelry is the classic gift, but finding the right piece for your loved one is easier said than done. So let us inspire you with three Berlin designers whose creations you won’t find anywhere else. We’ve heard that signet rings are back and Ae jewelry (Ae = Alexandra Elizabeth) is fully on board with their personalized rings that combine traditional craftsmanship with modern flair. Originating in the German gem Mecca of Idar-Oberstein, the rings are crafted to order from recycled yellow gold and white gold by a master goldsmith. You can arrange an initial consultation with the Berlin-based brand to get inspired, try rings, and discuss your desired engraving. And if you are feeling regal, you can even have a family crest designed with the help of a trained heraldist!

Next up is Berlin studio Jose Anglada run by Argentina-born Josefina, whose bracelets and rings are simple, delicate and handmade to order. Finished in silver, the classic shapes make these pieces highly versatile. Also: Josefina’s creations will also be available on the Labels app, so you can get them delivered to your door in 30 minutes. Finally, if it’s color you’re after, take a look at Aricluv, the fun, funky brand from Berlin designer Karina Petrova. With great attention to detail, she makes earrings, bracelets and necklaces using natural pearls and handmade pendants. We particularly love Karina’s smiley earrings for lightening up any winter outfit: no matter how gray things get, these pieces will bring the good vibes.

LAS — LIGHT AND SPACE FROM ROBERT IRWIN AT KRAFTWERK BERLIN

LAS — LIGHT AND SPACE FROM ROBERT IRWIN AT KRAFTWERK BERLIN

The American artist Robert Irwin began his career as a painter before swapping canvas for open space in the 1970s. Since then, he has been challenging perceptions with his minimalist spatial interventions that often use light. Today, Irwin is a leading member of the “Light and Space” movement and has collaborated with fellow artists like James Turrell and NASA researchers, demonstrating his broad artistic interests. You can now view the largest Irwin work ever to be shown in Europe at Kraftwerk Berlin as part of Light Art Space’s residency at the former power station. Irwin’s “Light and Space” series premiered in 2007 and has now been re-created using fluorescent tubes mounted on white walls in an abstract, highly rhythmic arrangement. The work – Light and Space (Kraftwerk Berlin) – sees Irwin combine white and blue fluorescent tubes mounted on both sides of a free-standing 16x16m wall. The artist creates a comprehensive visual experience that takes our own perception and makes it part of the work, immersing us in his sensory experiment.

LIVELY SALADS AND COLORFUL WINTER DISHES: GROW YOUR OWN VITAMIN-PACKED MICROGREENS WITH STARTER KITS FROM HEIMGART

LIVELY SALADS AND COLORFUL WINTER DISHES: GROW YOUR OWN VITAMIN-PACKED MICROGREENS WITH STARTER KITS FROM HEIMGART

Fresh, crisp greens can be hard to come by during the winter months. But before you reach for that limp looking bundle of parsley, consider one (surprisingly easy) solution: growing your own microgreens. Once the preserve of fine dining, these fresh, aromatic shoots can be harvested with almost no effort using the home-growing kits from Heimgart. Microgreens are simply vegetables that are harvested when they are young, and the Berlin-based startup has put together a starter set which contains everything you need to make it happen, including a porcelain sprouting bowl and a ready-to-go seed pad. All you need to do is add water, install the pad, and watch your little greens start to poke up. Within seven days you’ll be able to harvest the likes of fiery radish, vitamin-packed red cabbage and classic cress. The shoots are filled with nutrients and are perfect for livening up winter salads or adding a splash of color to hot dishes. If you’re looking to give the gift of green (or purple) to your favorite person this Christmas then the gift set – a starter kit with eight organic seed packs – is the one to go for. For foodies it’s the winning option: your friend can liven up their kitchen with diverse greens and you get to (hopefully) taste the results…

MAKE YOUR OWN CUSTOM FRAMES AT FRAMEWORKS — RECOMMENDED BY BIANCA KENNEDY

MAKE YOUR OWN CUSTOM FRAMES AT FRAMEWORKS — RECOMMENDED BY BIANCA KENNEDY

As an artist, I find framing to be one of the most expensive and unsatisfying parts of my work. So I was all the more pleased to discover Frameworks via the Saloon Berlin artist network. This year, the Kreuzberg framing provider has launched the Neukölln Britz-based “The Open Studio“, letting you learn to frame pictures yourself with no previous experience required. Located in a charming Industriehof, the space offers work stations for rent with instructions and staff on hand to advise the best frame for a given piece. Once you decide, the materials are prepared for you by the studio team: all you have to do is assemble them at your work station. Managers Claire and Barbara are also available for more in-depth tuition: besides renting work stations, the duo offer intensive four-hour DIY courses that explain the basics of frame making. If, on the other hand, you don’t want to get hands-on, you can head to the Frameworks shop in Kreuzberg where you can order custom-made frames or buy one of the ready-made recycled wood options.

A SATURDAY POP-UP MARKET BY GÖRLI — SEVEN BERLIN DESIGNERS AT THE FVF FRIENDS SPACE

A SATURDAY POP-UP MARKET BY GÖRLI — SEVEN BERLIN DESIGNERS AT THE FVF FRIENDS SPACE

When it comes to small design labels that don’t have a physical shop, your best chance to get an in-person glimpse is at a pop-up. With Christmas fast approaching, the latest pop-up event at the FvF Friends Space comes right on time. Seven independent labels from Berlin have joined forces for the Saturday market (11.12.2021) which will include music and refreshments. Besides ceramics and jewelry, you’ll find floral arrangements by Studio Linné plus brands like Truongii, whose crocheted hats we’re in love with. Founded in 2018, the fashion and textile studio is all about blending playful colors with sophisticated details, with embroidered shirts and felted loafers that are great fun. If you fancy a mug-shaped gift, look no further than Claï Studio, the ceramic studio run by architect Stefanie Lennartz. Her sleek vessels are perfect for your morning cortado and impress with their minimalist appearance. For wine-based refreshment, check out the range from natural wine project Nature’s Calling, whose limited-edition wines are sourced from young German winemakers. Whether you’re looking for gifts for your loved ones or just want to treat yourself, the Friends Space is the place to head this Saturday.
