METABOLIC RIFT FROM ATONAL — MULTI-SENSORY WORKS, KINETIC SCULPTURES AND LIVE CONCERTS AT KRAFTWERK

METABOLIC RIFT FROM ATONAL — MULTI-SENSORY WORKS, KINETIC SCULPTURES AND LIVE CONCERTS AT KRAFTWERK

How close are we to living in a dystopian world? A group of internationally acclaimed visual artists and musicians pose and answer this very question during Atonal’s multi-part concert series and exhibition Metabolic Rift. In place of the usual August festival, Atonal is returning to the iconic Kraftwerk complex with an invitation for the public to immerse themselves in a series of over 20 site-specific works hidden throughout the haunting structure. As part of the exhibition, attendees will be the first to set foot inside the eerie, shuttered club spaces since their Covid-induced closure. Hidden basement rooms never before accessible to the general public host multi-channel sounds that echo among kinetic sculptures, futuristic cityscapes and floor-to-ceiling multi-sensory works.

Between the building’s passages, projections of stop-motion psychedelic imagery flash like hallucinations, guiding you on a disoriented journey into transient works that appear and disappear just as quickly. You are left with lingering and unsettling questions about our existence. In addition to the interdisciplinary works on show, world-premiere A/V performances and site-specific works will take place in the form of ticketed concerts. The lineup features renowned composers and musicians including Actress, Caterina Barbieri, Klein, Space Afrika, Tim Hecker and Ziúr. The building itself is worth a visit and the radiating feelings of solitude make it the perfect place for some mid-performance introspection.

VILLA AUGUSTE — BEAUTIFULLY-APPOINTED COUNTRY HOUSE FOR TRANQUIL UCKERMARK HOLIDAYS

VILLA AUGUSTE — BEAUTIFULLY-APPOINTED COUNTRY HOUSE FOR TRANQUIL UCKERMARK HOLIDAYS

This is a place you wish your mom owned — or better yet, you owned. Surrounded by Uckermark nature and with absolutely no neighbors, Villa Auguste is the ideal weekend getaway for city dwellers in need of some R&R. In 2017 Daniela and Martin van Eickels found the run-down Victorian villa built around the turn of the century by chance and immediately fell in love. They teamed up with interior designer Anne Schütz and landscape designer Rainer Elstermann to create their dream vacation home. Now the time has come to enjoy the fruits of their labor. From the exterior and interior color selections to the beautiful tiles, wallpapers, brass hardware and vintage furniture, everything has been hand-selected with love and attention to detail. Entering via the peaceful conservatory, you are led to the English shaker-style kitchen that is equipped with a gorgeous French Lacanche range that will make any cook’s dreams come true.

The spacious yet cozy living-dining area is laden with casual elegance, melding rustic and modern beautifully. The villa offers four bedrooms – two en-suite – accommodating up to 10 guests. During the summer months you will find ripe grapes, apples and pears hanging in the massive garden, which is also home to hundreds of butterflies and bees that dance round the wondrous array of lilac and purple blooms. If you wish to venture out, guests have access to a nearby private beach at Sternhagen Lake and Gaia restaurant is just a stone’s throw away. This time it really is true: pictures don’t do justice to the beauty of this place.

BERLIN FOOD WEEK — FESTIVAL OF CUISINE RETURNS WITH SUSTAINABLE FINE DINING EVENTS AND A HAMBURG CHEF IN BERLIN

BERLIN FOOD WEEK — FESTIVAL OF CUISINE RETURNS WITH SUSTAINABLE FINE DINING EVENTS AND A HAMBURG CHEF IN BERLIN

Open lasagne topped with smoked paprika foam, Brandenburg-inspired pepper and kohlrabi risotto, and Oberhavel peaches served with honey ice cream and plum jelly. If dishes like these get your palate stimulated and your stomach rumbling, this year’s Berlin Food Week (20–26.09.2021) is not to be missed. After a Covid-enforced break last year, the food festival is back with a program of dining, events and markets that focus on the most pressing of topics: sustainability and regionality. A highlight is bound to be the Küchentausch series, where prominent chefs swap their kitchens for the day. On 21.09 Sebastian Junge – from Hamburg’s Wolfs Junge – will be heading to Kreuzberg to take over Lode & Stijn for five courses of experimental cuisine. The same night, Lode van Zuylen and Remi Stijn will be serving up their modern seasonal dishes at Wolfs Junge. If you want to follow the Berlin pair to the Hansestadt, you might also want to make a few other reservations: Hamburg has long been a favorite among gastro connoisseurs with its honest Nordic-inspired cuisine. In fact, the city’s restaurants have been awarded seven Green Stars in the Michelin Guide – a record in Germany for sustainable fine dining.

There is plenty to enjoy back in Berlin, not least the Stadtmenü which will see 50 of the city’s restaurants serving special climate-friendly menus. Among them is the locally-sourced brunch from Frühstück 3000 and a hearty vegetarian three-course meal at the revived Clärchens Ballhaus. Don’t miss the House of Food at Bikini Berlin where you can sample the likes of Nordic Oceanfruit’s seaweed-based treats. Much like the rest of the program, they’re sustainable, experimental – and tasty.

WILLIAM FAN ARCHIVE SALE CURATED BY ZORA AUGUSTE — HAND-SELECTED FASHION PIECES, CERAMICS & MORE

WILLIAM FAN ARCHIVE SALE CURATED BY ZORA AUGUSTE — HAND-SELECTED FASHION PIECES, CERAMICS & MORE

Hand-selected – that’s what describes Zora Auguste best. In the past few years we have gotten to know and love the “gallery” concept that the fashion and design project’s founders Nella Beljan and Marie Wez have developed. Now the pair have finally found a home at a wonderful room on Leipziger Strasse which features a high concrete ceiling that is well suited to their carefully curated selection of pieces. What can you expect? Ceramics (both as art and as design objects), table lamps, candles that look like light sculptures, and metallic book stands that wouldn’t look out of place on the desk of Walter Gropius. You’ll also find interior pieces courtesy of William Fan, who acquired them from his Hong Kong-born mother. But that’s not the main reason the Berlin designer is there.

The venue will also welcome garments from William’s current fashion collection plus archive pieces that Nella and Marie have selected to match the Zora Auguste vibe. Expect a color palette of off-whites, beiges, caramels and navy. There are beautiful blouses in fine fabrics with unexpected details, wide-cut trousers, ensembles and some real statement pieces including a long sequin dress. Sophisticated, refined and yet laid-back is the spirit that William’s clothes – and the whole collection – convey. There’s another reason to visit, though: the archive sale’s special pricing. A good time to start your own collection, we think.

BONVIVANT GOES LOCAL — CUISINE FROM FORAGED INGREDIENTS AND INNOVATIVE COCKTAILS

BONVIVANT GOES LOCAL — CUISINE FROM FORAGED INGREDIENTS AND INNOVATIVE COCKTAILS

As a gastronomer, how can you make sure you get the best ingredients? One way is to just gather them yourself – and that’s precisely what Bonvivant’s chef Nikodemus Berger does. He looks after the cuisine at the Schöneberg cocktail bar and bistro and has been rolling up his sleeves to collect some very special supplies for next week’s Berlin Food Week (20-26.09.2021). Berger and the kitchen team have been on foraging trails around Berlin to source the yarrow, cornelian cherries, redcurrants and wild apple that feature in a three-course vegetarian menu they will serve all next week as part of the festival’s Stadtmenü program. The focus: sustainable, seasonal organic ingredients served in a relaxed way (“Eat-Easy Cuisine”, as it’s called here). The venue for the feast is the vibrant copper and velvet interior that has been catching our eye since we encountered Bonvivant in 2019. As for the dishes, you’ll just have to try them yourself, but expect the likes of parsnips served with smoked yeast, quince, chervil, sunflower seeds and cornel cherries. To accompany are three cocktails which take bold and beautiful blending to the next level (apple cider vinegar, carrot, ginger and chilli, anyone?) If you want to enjoy these innovative flavors outside Berlin Food Week, you can book a table at Bonvivant any time and sample the latest treats gathered by the kitchen team. Like we said: tasting is believing…
