LES EPICURIENS AT MARHEINEKE MARKTHALLE — FRENCH BISTRO AND DELICATESSEN

LES EPICURIENS AT MARHEINEKE MARKTHALLE — FRENCH BISTRO AND DELICATESSEN

Ever been to the Marheineke Markthalle? If not there’s a real pearl hidden here: the bistro and shop Les Épicuriens that opened in 2013. French-born Éric and Frédéric’s love for good food and their neighborhood is evident. Warm and welcoming, they pay attention to quality, working closely with the winegrowers and the French family businesses that supply their charcuterie and traditionally-made cheese. They even make a range of patés in-house. We recommend paring a glass of wine with the cheeses, which include the Mimolette extra vieille (whey cheese), Brie with Périgord truffles, and a Comté from Marcel Petit. But the highlight is the oysters, which are sourced not from Brittany as one would expect, but Oléron in the Atlantic, giving them a slightly milder yet rich taste. For special cheese and meats as well as French gifts like marmalade and chocolate, this is the place to head. And Frédéric has a tip: pick up some oysters for your next Sunday morning breakfast – thanks to their high iodine content, they are an excellent hangover cure. PARS: EDIBLE PRALINE ARTWORKS FROM KRISTIANE KEGELMANN

PARS: EDIBLE PRALINE ARTWORKS FROM KRISTIANE KEGELMANN

Inside Pars exquisite polyhedron pralines you’ll find fillings and flavors far beyond the usual nuts and liqueur. How about Sicilian lemon and elderflower or beetroot and red currant? “Pars” is Latin for “part” or “piece’, and the pralines from this Kreuzberg chocolatier are little pieces of heaven, very much a cut above shop-bought chocs. Founder Kristiane Kegelmann, previously of traditional Viennese confectioners Demel, creates custom-made chocolates that make the perfect gift for extra-special occasions – think birthdays, Christmas parties and corporate events. Available to order in a range of editions, the pralines are coated in chocolate from Lithuanian masters Chocolate Naive and finished with gold leaf. But Pars’s speciality is collaborations, and now Kegelmann has teamed up with Nobelhart & Schmutzig to create a hazelnut and wild juniper-filled chocolate which, starting today (17.10.2019), will be given to guests as a treat for the journey home. It’s delicious confectionary turned into an art form. (Text: Benji Haughton / Photos: Pujan Shakupa)

Pars editions can be ordered online (allow two weeks). For custom-made creations, get in touch with Kristiane by email.

“THIS PLACE” — PHOTOGRAPHIC STORIES FROM ISRAEL AND THE WEST BANK AT THE JEWISH MUSEUM BERLIN

“THIS PLACE” — PHOTOGRAPHIC STORIES FROM ISRAEL AND THE WEST BANK AT THE JEWISH MUSEUM BERLIN

When we think about Israel and the West Bank, it’s easy to get lost in the politics of the place. But what about the people? “This Place”, an exhibition at the Jewish Museum led by French photographer Frédéric Brenner, tells their stories through photos. Brenner commissioned 12 different photo artists to spend extended periods in the region, and the result is a collection of more than 200 photographs exploring themes of landscape, homeland, identity and family. Each photographer shows us a different perspective. Wendy Ewald invites people to tell their own stories by photographing themselves and their daily lives in the region. Meanwhile photographer Jungjin Lee‘s landscape photographs are characterized by a melancholic, simple beauty. Her large-scale images of the desert point to the region’s conflict, managing to be both poignant and serene at the same time. The exhibition is an intimate, but above all human account of Israel and the West Bank, a region where life is so often dogged by international geopolitics. INTO THE WOODS — FIELD NOTES, RECIPES AND EXPERT TIPS FOR FORAGERS

Are you looking for both adventure and a break from the hustle and bustle of the city? Moritz Schmid, author of Into the Woods, invites you to rediscover the thrill of losing yourself in the forest. Reading “Into the Woods” feels like wandering around with a friend who loves to share their knowledge of the forest and its infinite mushroom species before you gather around a table to enjoy your haul. The book shares the golden rules of mushroom hunting, what to take along on a foraging trip, the ABCs of mushroom identification – hello real chanterelle, bay bolete and orange birch bolete – and how to skillfully prepare your find. How about smoked porcini mushroom butter, chanterelles on grilled cucumber and barbequed cep boletus with wild herbs and mojo verde? The book is full of compelling testimonies by people who reveal the effect the forest has on them. Just reading it leaves you relaxed, inspired and full of wanderlust. FROM AVANT–GARDE TO BEBOP — FOUR DAYS OF LIVE MUSIC AT THE JAZZFEST

FROM AVANT–GARDE TO BEBOP — FOUR DAYS OF LIVE MUSIC AT THE JAZZFEST

One of the reasons that I love jazz is also the reason why it’s so hard to (preemptively) write about it — it has no rules. A live jazz concert is improvised, bouncing off the energy of the crowd and never to be played the same way twice. If you haven’t yet had the pleasure to be a part of a live jazz concert, you’re in luck. The Jazzfest Berlin will bring together about 200 musicians from 15 countries to the city for a four-day party. On opening night, legendary pioneer of Chicago’s 60s free jazz scene Anthony Braxton will premier his latest project “Sonic Genome”, an immersive six-hour performance featuring 60 (!) musicians at the Gropius Bau. Other events worth highlighting are the Late Night Labs, where three independent bands will share the stage of the Berliner Festspiele, and a concert with Berlin drummer and composer Christian Lillinger, winner of the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik 3-2019. We can’t tell you exactly what to expect — listen, dance and let the vibe transport you to a different time and place for a while. (Text: Emily Miotke / Photos: Camille Blake, Diane Allford)
