NATURE IN THE CITY: TAKE THE TRAM TO HABERMANNSEE LAKE

NATURE IN THE CITY: TAKE THE TRAM TO HABERMANNSEE LAKE

Every year, there’s a hype about Berlin’s next best-kept secret lake to cool down during hot summer days. I usually just browse through online maps and search for blue spots that are surrounding the city by the thousands. Last weekend, I wanted to go to a lake that’s not too far and reachable by public transportation; we ended up at Habermannsee in Hellersdorf, a perfect place for me. It’s equipped with plenty of sunbathing areas all around the shore, grassy areas for couples, and sandy beaches with a good stretch of shallow water for the little ones. And, to top it off, the water is warm! (I for one dislike cold water). I even saw some folks BBQing, although I’m not sure if it’s allowed. Needless to say, if you can’t find me this summer, you know where I am… (Text & Photos: Sven Hausherr)

AUTOCENTER SUMMER ACADEMY: THE ART OF LEARNING

AUTOCENTER SUMMER ACADEMY: THE ART OF LEARNING

Summer academy? Well, the weather’s been pretty lame lately so we might as well sit in a “classroom” and learn something, right? And not just anything, but about art. The Autocenter Summer Academy will be offering various lectures and tours with artists and art experts throughout the month of July. I’ve marked my calendar for next week. Alexander Cigal will be present, and art expert and publisher Uta Grosenick will hold a lecture on July 10! Norwegian-born artist Yngve Holen will be the “teacher” in the following week. I would be happy to learn more from this Städel School graduate whose installations are very catchy and contemporary, dealing with topics such as digital revolution and water crisis at the same time. Check their schedule online and enroll asap… (Text: Nina Trippel / photos: ACSA)

FANATIC GAMES — NOT JUST FOR FOOTBALL JUNKIES

FANATIC GAMES — NOT JUST FOR FOOTBALL JUNKIES

The Fanatic tournament that was held in New York every summer was one of my favorite events. It’s an amateur but serious football tournament that was also fun for people who are not the biggest football fans. This Saturday, Fanatic will take place in Berlin. With the great weather forecast you can expect a super relaxed afternoon with food, free drinks plus some side activities for the little ones. Come and join the fun while watching the big boys from teams like Voo, Vice, Lodown, Mykita, Soto, Soho (London), Colette (Paris) and Wood Wood (Copenhagen) play ball, sweating in the sun. PADDLING NEAR BURG IN THE SPREEWALD COUNTRYSIDE

PADDLING NEAR BURG IN THE SPREEWALD COUNTRYSIDE

At first it may sound like an excursion for the elderly, but actually it is a truly refreshing daytime fun and far from being a boring booze cruise. It requires a lot of physical exertion, some interesting skills and can be a testament to all types of relationships. You can start the tour anywhere, though in the high season the boats should be reserved in advance. The kayaks fit pairs or groups of three while the canoes fit maximum of four people (approx. 25 euro/day). Groups of eight can also have someone drive them (approx. 14 euro/person for 3 hours), and catering from coffees to grill is inclusive. During busy weekends the so-called “watergate kids” help you through the gates by singing (potential YouTube hits!) – so have some change handy. At certain areas it can get humorously tumultuous, but there is a wide network of waterways and space for idyllic relaxation. You’ll discover many piers and hidden paradises for your next holiday destinations ashore. It is also great in winter, when everything is frozen and you can ice skate through the winter-fairytale landscape. But for now, it’s warm and the Spreewald is a perfect place for a quick summer trip. (Text & photos: Stephanie Franzius)

OUR FAVORITE SUMMER BLOG: LIEBLING BRANDENBURG

OUR FAVORITE SUMMER BLOG: LIEBLING BRANDENBURG

Hanging out in Berlin’s inner city, one might easily forget how big this city really is, and that there is still plenty to discover on the outskirts. That’s what struck my mind when I was introduced to the blog Liebling Brandenburg the other day. Katrin shares her favorite guest houses in the Brandenburg area, and I fell in love with the concept right away. Brandenburg is now on top of my to do list. So check out her blog and find your favorite for one of the upcoming summer weekends. (Text: Sven Hausherr / photos: Jens Plate Architekten (left), Karen Massine (top))
