PROJECT FLUSSBAD: TAKE A DIP IN CLEAR SPREE RIVER WATER

PROJECT FLUSSBAD: TAKE A DIP IN CLEAR SPREE RIVER WATER

Berlin’s Spree River is a federal waterway, more or less, which can only mean one thing: it is loud and dirty. But it doesn’t have to be – in Switzerland and in other German cities, it is a tradition to swim in the city’s rivers during summer. Back in 1998, two architects, Jan and Tim Edler (realities:united), came up with the great idea of ecologically upgrading the Spree canal. Their idea is to transform the Spree into a 750-meter-long swimmable urban river, between Schlossplatz and Bodemuseum. The staircases at Lustgarten invite us to sit and linger. The biotope area and reed beds in the upper river region of the 1.6km watercourse ensure clean, natural river water. Turning their vision into reality – target year 2020 – calls for our commitment too. For instance there is the Verein Flussbad e.V. that awaits to be supported financially or by you taking action (more info here). Let’s make this happen! (Text: Milena Kalojanov)

VILLAGE MARKET: NEW FOOD EVENT STARTING IN AUGUST

VILLAGE MARKET: NEW FOOD EVENT STARTING IN AUGUST

You don’t have to feel sad anymore as the weekend wraps up. The organizers behind the former Bar 25 and Chalet are starting a Sunday event that involves street food and honest music. Danny Faber and Andreas Söcknick found their new home at the RAW area in Friedrichshain: a place for creative artists, Sunday night owls, and foodies alike. Starting on August 3, “Village Market” will take place every Sunday from noon to 22:00. Around twenty food trucks will be offering tasty treats that range from classic to experimental. Apart from that, street musicians and theater productions will rock the boat. After 22:00, local DJs will spin the perfect soundtrack for a night after a day of feasting. Dance some and drink some – bars offer cocktails, smoothies, beer and wine – from dusk till dawn. Because Friedrichshain nights are long. (Text: Eva Biringer)

AUTOCENTER SUMMER ACADEMY: THE ART OF LEARNING

AUTOCENTER SUMMER ACADEMY: THE ART OF LEARNING

Summer academy? Well, the weather’s been pretty lame lately so we might as well sit in a “classroom” and learn something, right? And not just anything, but about art. The Autocenter Summer Academy will be offering various lectures and tours with artists and art experts throughout the month of July. I’ve marked my calendar for next week. Alexander Cigal will be present, and art expert and publisher Uta Grosenick will hold a lecture on July 10! Norwegian-born artist Yngve Holen will be the “teacher” in the following week. I would be happy to learn more from this Städel School graduate whose installations are very catchy and contemporary, dealing with topics such as digital revolution and water crisis at the same time. Check their schedule online and enroll asap… (Text: Nina Trippel / photos: ACSA)

BREAKFAST AT BARCOMI’S: BAGELS IN THE BACKYARD AND CAKE TO GO

BREAKFAST AT BARCOMI’S: BAGELS IN THE BACKYARD AND CAKE TO GO

Saturday, nine in the morning. Mitte is still asleep and it’s the best time to have breakfast by yourself at Barcomi’s. You can sit in the sun, have a salmon bagel, read the newspaper and drink some coffee in peace. The rush comes later, when you’re about ready to order a piece of cake to take home. Their selection is huge: everything from apple pie, carrot cake, cheesecake to chocolate marble cake. Before Cynthia Barcomi started baking, she actually wanted to become a dancer, but instead studied drama and philosophy. When Starbucks was still a foreign name in Germany, she decided that drama and brooding over theories are not her thing. So Barcomi opend her first café in 1994 and three years later a second one. She baked muffins and served brownies; and so she does to this day. Additionally she writes cookbooks, roasts her own coffee and has developed her own fine aluminum bakeware line. If you want to pull one of her sweet creations out of the oven, drop by either in the shop or online. (Text: Laura Storfner / Photos: Barcomi’s)

OUTDOOR SUPPER CLUB ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF BERLIN

OUTDOOR SUPPER CLUB ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF BERLIN

You’ve got a great idea for the weekend – trip to the countryside, enjoying a picnic in a perfect setting. But you haven’t got a clue where to go nor a desire to go grocery shopping before the holiday begins. Here is an answer: enroll in Speisenklub’s upcoming trip to Liebenwalde. The supper club by Cathrin Brandes and Thomas Greb was founded in 2011 and has organized three trips to Liebenwalde since. The exact location will only be revealed after confirmation, but for your information and planning, it’s about a 45 minute ride from Mitte by car or about 20 minutes on your bike using the “Heidekrautbahn”. Most importantly, they’ll be serving pâtés, salads, bread, ham, BBQ with self-made sausages, cakes, homemade lemonade, cordials and strawberry-elderflower punchbowl and much more. What a feast! We don’t know how many slots are still available, but there are at least four tickets on hold for Cee Cee readers, and the deadline has been extended to Friday. Have a happy escape! P.S. In case of rain, there is an alternative location. (Text: Nina Trippel / photos: Uli Kohl)
