IT’S SUMMER, WHAT CAN YOU DO… OUR EVENT TIPS FOR THE DAYS AHEAD

IT’S SUMMER, WHAT CAN YOU DO… OUR EVENT TIPS FOR THE DAYS AHEAD

It’s too hot to make plans but you still want to be out and about enjoying the sunshine, savoring every moment. The fact is, the more you get outside, the longer summer feels. So, get outside! Start on Friday evening (16.08.2024) at Dittrich & Schlechtriem, where architect Gustav Düsing is showing a new work called Parasols as part of the “Ephemerals” exhibition. Afterward, move on to Gropius Bau for the last evening of the Sound Metaphors listening series — DJ sets by Castro and Nemo (the creators of Sound Metaphors Records) and food and drinks from the Beba team from the Airstream. As part of the “Tanz im August” festival, the piece “Skatepark” by Danish choreographer Mette Ingvartsen will be performed at Haus der Berliner Festspiele over the weekend (17.–18.08.). In the outdoor area of the Kindl Centre for Contemporary Art, the Open Air Film Screening “States of Fragility” will show seven artistic short films — admission is free and the Babette’s Garden team will provide chilled drinks. And because tickets sell out faster than expected, here’s a tip for the following weekend: at “Openless“, this year’s edition of Berlin Atonal, an illustrious group of visual and sound artists will be showing immersive works at Kraftwerk (23.-25.08.). Among them are Forensic Architecture, in collaboration with PAN / Bill Kouligas, and the legendary Chris Watson with artist Izabela Dłużyk. The after-parties of the Atonal Days will appropriately take place at Tresor/Globus and Ohm. So being outside or inside – both have their appeal these days…

HOT HOT AUGUST — OUR EVENT PICKS FOR THIS WEEKEND AND BEYOND

HOT HOT AUGUST — OUR EVENT PICKS FOR THIS WEEKEND AND BEYOND

Is the August page of your calendar still looking a bit empty? Allow us to fill it up with our pick of the best – and most creative – events in the coming weeks. First up: Berlin interview magazine Mono.kultur, which is marking the release of its latest issue with an open-air screening of director Mike Mills’ 2024 film Come on, Come on this Friday (09.08.2024) at Freiluftkino Kreuzberg. The magazine is dedicating a whole edition to Mills, who will attend the screening to talk about the film, which stars the always-intense Joaquin Phoenix. Meanwhile, the art is on the page over at EinBuch.Haus, the Pankow project gallery which takes a single beautifully-designed book and turns it into an exhibition. Up and Coming, the current show running until 17.08., centers on not one but three books, whose creators – Anja Dietmann/Jonas Beuchert, Elfi Handina Murandu and Johanna Behrens – were awarded the Stiftung Buchkunst Sponsorship Prize for Young Book Design. Besides the prize-winning books (which are available to buy), the exhibition features installations and prints all showcasing impeccable print design. Finally: after all that cultural excitement, some sustenance. Keit, the aesthetically pleasing pair of bakeries in Friedrichshain and Schöneberg, is opening a third shop in Kreuzberg’s Graefestraße with a launch event this Saturday (10.08.). The new “micro store” is open from 13h, serving sourdough, coffee and – appropriately for the weather – scoops of vanilla and caramel ice cream featuring Keit’s own bread chips. Come for the bread, stay for the sweet treats…

TANTALIZING ALL YOUR SENSES: A GUIDE TO THE WEEKEND

TANTALIZING ALL YOUR SENSES: A GUIDE TO THE WEEKEND

Thursday is newsletter day, marking the start of the weekend. As always, we’ve sifted through Instagram posts and press emails to collect recommendations for the next few days. Summer is all about FKK (Naturism), at least according to the “Freikörperkollagen” exhibition, which opens tonight (01.08.2024) at the Zwitschermaschine on Potsdamer Straße. Expect a clever and humorous showcase with works by Lula Valletta, Jan Brokof and the fantastic D.M. Nagu. The evening will feature a performance by Rinus van Alebeek with collage-cassette-noise and the exhibition runs until 10.08. On Friday (02.08.2024), the Adidas store Laundromat will host a wellness day in Prenzlauer Berg. Various treatments, including nails by “Everybody’s Darling” Isla Berlin, goodie bags, and relaxing surprises will be available. If you’re not dipping your freshly pedicured toes in the water on Saturday, take refuge in the air-conditioned comfort of the picture gallery and admire the 17th-century portraits by Frans Hals. For those who prefer to feed their ears rather than their eyes, the A L’arme Festival for contemporary jazz and experimental avant-garde music at Radialsystem offers a challenging yet rewarding experience. Or, for something a bit more relaxed, check out the Uferradio at Paul-Lincke-Ufer 40.

Jacob will be serving the hottest merguez sandwiches outside Marseille, accompanied by champagne and DJ sets from Disco Garden. I usually eat at my mom’s on Sundays, but if you don’t have family in town, there are two very tempting alternatives this Sunday (04.08.). Peruvian cuisine has gained attention in recent years, and in Berlin, Arianna Plevisani, known as Ari’s, stands out for her native flavors. She combines these with a classic diner aesthetic at Julius Ernst in Wedding. A more casual dinner can be found above the rooftops of Kreuzberg’s Moritzplatz at Suppa. The culinary collective invites you to “enticing, zesty, and brave” drinks by bar legends Max Moessmer and Arun Naagenthira Puvanendran, who are also behind Nox Cocktailbistro, at the “Chef’s Day Off” (04.08.) at Atelier BerlinMartin Müllerwill be cooking, with dishes such as lettuce-caviar-hamachi plum, plus music, of course, because in Berlin there’s always a party, even on Sundays. For those who can’t make it on Sunday, next Thursday (08.08.), Gather is bringing Caribbean cookbook author Riaz Philipps to the city together with Sips, more precisely to Terz am Herrfurthplatz. The menu costs €55 per person and tickets are available here.

OUT AND PROUD — OUR PARTY AND PARADE PICKS FOR CSD 2024

OUT AND PROUD — OUR PARTY AND PARADE PICKS FOR CSD 2024

From drag queen brunches to latin parties, CSD Berlin (27.07.2024) is much more than just a pride march. First up: if you need to brush up on your LGBTQ+ history head over to Nollendorfplatz for the Queer & Trans History Tour on Friday (26.07.). The guided walk takes you through 100+ years of successes and struggles courtesy of expert guide Jeff, who uses augmented reality elements to project Berlin’s LGBTQ+ history onto the streets. Meanwhile, over at Keller Kreuzberg they’re celebrating pride as only they can: with a dose of sex positive good vibes. The colorful shop for toys, tees and fetishes will be open extra long during CSD with drinks, competitions and a mid-summer sale (25.–27.07.). Next up, the main event: Saturday (27.07.) will see 75 trucks and tens of thousands of people take to the streets for the annual CSD demonstration. To address grumbles that pride marches are more about big brands than activism, this year’s event hopes to be firmly political, with six policy demands and dozens of campaign groups taking part. The floats to watch (and dance behind) include Deutsche Aidshilfe, Amnesty International and Queerer Sportverein Berlin. The meeting point for the march – which goes through Schöneberg to the Siegessäule – is the corner of Leipziger Strasse and Spittelmarkt at 12 midday.

Rounding off Saturday’s events are the (in)famous pride parties, running well into Sunday. The official celebration takes place at Ritter Butzke in Kreuzberg, with a colorful lineup that includes a DJ set by Hot Chip and an appearance by queer performance icon Amanda Lepore. If you prefer dancing to the off-beat, Lido Berlin is where you’ll want to end up. The Kreuzberg concert venue is hosting Furiosa “Latin Pride” with an all-night program of Latin pop and reggaeton. Doors open at midnight, so round up your pride crew and ¡Vamos de fiesta!.

ART, MUSIC & POP-UPS: WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND

ART, MUSIC & POP-UPS: WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND

Whether the sun is shining or clouds darken the sky, this weekend has something to offer. Our recommendations? Immerse yourself in the world of unfinished and unreleased film projects with the book presentation of Film Undone. International artists and editors will share insights and discussions on their creative processes. You’ll have the opportunity to learn about the stories behind unrealized films and how they have taken shape in other media. If you haven’t managed to visit the disused Tegel Airport, you’ll have the opportunity to do so this weekend. The Turbulence Crew invites you to a free summer rave. The open-air space, once a freight canteen, will be transformed into a backdrop for art, music and workshops. In addition to beats from In2Stellar and Orange Drift, there will be food and drinks. Free tickets are available via Resident Advisor.

If you’re in the mood for an indulgent yet relaxing evening, fresh oysters and chilled wine await you on the terrace of Neukölln’s U Bar, bringing the Côte d’Azur to the city center. The Monopol creative hub is hosting a spontaneous flea market organized by artist Ryoji Homma. The former fuel factory is now a creative center housing over twenty artist studios. Discover handmade artworks, fashion and accessories with Homma. Accompanied by BBQ, beer and live DJs, browse in a relaxed atmosphere (or sell your items for a small fee). To round off the weekend, head to Estelle for an evening of spaghetti vongole, antipasti and classic Italian dolci — accompanied, as always, by wines and creative cocktails. Summer in Berlin is full of exciting experiences, whatever the weather.
