ANYTHING GOES, BUT ONLY IF IT’S YELLOW: THE FIRST EDITION OF “SUPER COLLECTIVE MARKET” BY A—Z

ANYTHING GOES, BUT ONLY IF IT’S YELLOW: THE FIRST EDITION OF “SUPER COLLECTIVE MARKET” BY A—Z

Even from afar, A-Z Space, an exhibition space founded in 2019 by Anja Lutz, catches everyone’s eye: the yellow-painted bench next to the entrance, the green-and-yellow curtain with “Flipper” lettering hanging inside, and the neon-yellow floor is no less restrained in its form. In case you haven’t noticed, yellow seems to be a thing here. So it’s no surprise that the first edition of the temporary A-Z “Super Collective Market” is entirely dedicated to the color itself. The opening will take place this Saturday (26.08.2023): Products will be on display and for sale, including limited edition prints, books, textiles and a kit to create your own – of course – yellow pigments. A performance of the interactive game “Fishing for Yellow” by Hyesu Son, drinks, snacks and music all await you. Until the end of October 2023, you can drop by the first edition of the pop-up and participate in workshops and other events initiated by the A-Z Collective: at the “Banana Museum: Sorry to See You Split So Soon” talk, Anna Broujean will tell you about the International Banana Museum in Mecca (California), which exhibits over 25,000 objects related to the banana. She’ll show you the strangest banana memorabilia and explore why such initiatives are so important for preserving design relics. On 7.10. you can learn more about butter with April Gertler and then learn how to make your own – a workshop suitable for young and old. So dress in yellow and look forward to color-coordinated drinks and workshops!

FROM PICKLES TO DRINKS — GO ZERO WASTE AT CEE CEE LESSONS X DISCARDED SPIRITS AT AERDE RESTAURANT

FROM PICKLES TO DRINKS — GO ZERO WASTE AT CEE CEE LESSONS X DISCARDED SPIRITS AT AERDE RESTAURANT

Finally, we’re getting hands-on once again with our Cee Cee Lessons. As always, the focus is on learning from experts – not in a classroom, of course, but somewhere a little more exciting. The topic this time? Zero Waste food. For those who don’t yet know, we started our Cee Cee Lessons series some years ago by inviting inspiring Berlin creatives to teach us something. Whether baking bread or pouring concrete, we’ve tried out quite a few things and made lots of creations to take home at the end of the day. Now, together with our partner Discarded Spirits, we’ve joined forces with Aerderestaurant for a lesson on the topic of fermenting food (in this case fish, cauliflower and tomato). Over the course of an afternoon (29.08.2023) you’ll learn to integrate the Zero Waste approach into your kitchen routine even without prior knowledge. During the lesson, you’ll work with vegetables to make a jar of pickled goodness that you can take home with you. But don’t worry: you’ll also be able to taste it there and then, discovering how leftovers are not only delicious, but fun to work with too.

Before we bring our new knowledge home, we’ll make a toast with drinks made using Discarded’s vermouth, vodka and rum which, incidentally, are also made from food that would otherwise be thrown away. Sarah Swantje Fischer from cocktail bar Velvet will be giving a masterclass on the very topic of Zero Waste drinks. If you’re wondering what this all tastes like, then join us: we are giving away two places for the Zero Waste Cee Cee Lesson with Discarded Spirits at Aerde in Schöneberg. Email us at win@ceecee.cc to take part!

A FESTIVAL OF GAMES — INTERGENERATIONAL COMPETITIONS AT THE TUMMELTAGE

A FESTIVAL OF GAMES — INTERGENERATIONAL COMPETITIONS AT THE TUMMELTAGE

Children, artists, attractions: this weekend (19 & 20.08.2023) marks the first Tummeltage. The what? Yes, the Tummeltage – a kind of  community Olympic Games made by children and artists and open to everyone. Inspired by the 1960s idea of Fluxus artist George Macunias, the participants have created contests that are a bit different from the familiar tournaments of school, work and the internet. It’s all about slowness, noises and crazy aids, unusual courses and wacky trophies. The competitions and inventions will be supported by artists Birte Opitz, Marcos García Pérez, Mikala Hyldig Dal, Weiqi Wang and Yvonne Sembene. The festival (which was initiated by founders of Aktionshaus, Jana Maria Dohmann and Charlotte Kehl, and artist Sarah Brodbeck) is open to everyone no matter what age, body, ability or language. Everyone can take part in all disciplines – or just lie on the lawn, enjoy some snacks and watch.

There will be music and a radio show recording, and at the end the whole festival will be documented in a printed newspaper. To make sure everyone understands each other, there will be translators for various languages and no doubt lots of laughter. So pack up the kids, aunts, grandpas and pets and head to Neukölln. The spectacle will take place on the border between Buckow and Gropiusstadt at the Wildhüterweg playground. Let the games begin.

TEN YEARS OF BITE CLUB — STREET FOOD EVENT CELEBRATES AT ARENA BERLIN

TEN YEARS OF BITE CLUB — STREET FOOD EVENT CELEBRATES AT ARENA BERLIN

Clear tomorrow evening’s calendar and start saving up your appetite, because Bite Club is celebrating ten years of poutine, pulled pork and pancakes with an XXL street food party at Arena Berlin (11.08.2023 from 17h). Since landing on the scene in 2013, the food series has been the torchbearer for the food truck trend in Berlin. One decade on (can you believe it?! we can’t) the team – led by London-Born design historian and foodie Miranda Zahedieh – are back at their home venue with a mix of old favorites and new kids. The list of trucks, stands and stalls reads like a who’s who of trendy Berlin food vendors: Butter Bronsons are in attendance with their buttermilk chicken burgers, as are Munchies with their indulgent birria tacos and burgers (little reminder: when they aren’t at Bite Club, Munchies also make lunchies – in front of the Cee Cee Cafe). If you’ve never sampled street food from Karachi, the Dhuwan stand ought to be on your list with its Pakistani-inspired paneer tikka subs. Also worth a stop is Jarú, which serves very simple and very good Peruvian ceviche. And since you planned your visit properly (you did, didn’t you?) you’ll still have space for dessert. This comes courtesy of  Jones Ice Cream (scoops and cones) and Brammibals (strawberries and cream doughnuts). With your appetite taken care of, grab a spritz and a seat and enjoy the Spreeside sunset. Oh, and since this is the final Bite Club of the season, you might want to grab one final treat before you leave. An Octopus ball from Takoyaki? Let the party continue…

COMEDY LOVERS LISTEN UP: THE BERLIN FRINGE FESTIVAL AT THE COMEDY CAFÉ IS BACK

COMEDY LOVERS LISTEN UP: THE BERLIN FRINGE FESTIVAL AT THE COMEDY CAFÉ IS BACK

Calling all comedy lovers! The Berlin Fringe, a theater and comedy festival at Comedy Café Berlin, has returned after a few-year hiatus and is full of more laughs than ever! Beginning today (27.07.23) and running through Sunday (30.07.2023), the Fringe will play host to eleven shows by award-winning comedians. Whether you’re looking for stand-up, improv, physical comedy – or even something a little more experimental – there’s something for every funny bone. Lisa Frischemeier — you may know her as the host of the feminist stand-up showcase Witch Hunt or have seen a copy of her new book I See Vulvas Everywhere — has put together a diverse lineup, with standup and storytelling, acts drawing from both international and local talent. Why not kick off the weekend at Matilde Keizer’s work in progress The Seven Women one Woman Show, which incorporates clown and improv? Chase that with The Town Cryer, Brooke Finegold’s blended poetry and storytelling act, or the improvised musical performance by Band Practice. Josh Glanc, hailing from Australia and traveling from the UK, is a well-known talent whose unique performances have sold out shows at London’s Soho Theatre and the Edinburgh Fringe. And there’s only one way to find out what Berlin New Stand Up Award 2023 winner Theo Mason Wood’s Blood Sweat and Gluten is all about.

Comedy Café Berlin, also known affectionately as CCB, has been proudly planted on Neukölln’s Weserstraße since 2015 as Berlin’s first international, alternative comedy venue. Their regular programming features long-form improv, sketch, and stand-up comedy in both English and German – and more! Not to mention a full bar with local craft beer from BRLO and Berliner Berg, friendly staff, and an unpretentious, welcoming community. If you’re hungry for even more comedy after this weekend, CCB has shows going on every Thursday through Saturday, as well as open improv “jams” on Sundays and an excellent training school with a range of courses and workshops. And keep a lookout: in September they’re holding another international festival, Das Improv Festival.
