FARM FEAST — RURAL WALKS AND LOCALLY-SOURCED LUNCH AT MICHELBERGER FARM

FARM FEAST — RURAL WALKS AND LOCALLY-SOURCED LUNCH AT MICHELBERGER FARM

In the spring of 2019, the first vegetables were planted on the Michelberger Farm, a collection of fields and orchards in Spreewald which produce ingredients for the kitchen of the namesake hotel. Over time, the farm grew and by winter 2019, 1.5 hectares of the farm had been planted with a variety of fruit and nut trees, shrubs, berries and trees. Particular attention is paid to the herbs, the aim being to give diners a unique gastronomic experience. You can see the farm for yourself this Sunday (02.10.2022) at the fourth edition of Michelberger’s Farm Feast, where tours of the land are being held. Afterwards, the team are hosting an on-site lunch in what must be the most literal instance of farm-to-table dining you’ll come across.

For the autumn edition the seated dinner is being swapped for food and drink stands so you can mix and mingle with family, friends and neighbors of the farm. Arrival by car or train is possible with a complimentary shuttle pick up from Vetschau station on request. If you fancy breaking a sweat before you feast, you can sign up for a free bike tour with Tom Michelberger starting from Lübbenau train station. There are also plenty more activities to take advantage of during your trip to Spreewald, including spending an evening unwinding at Spreewald Therme Burg or checking out Ponyhof Reptenfor some more high-octane fun.

FORWARD FESTIVAL — CREATIVES CONNECT AT SOLD OUT BERLIN GATHERING

FORWARD FESTIVAL — CREATIVES CONNECT AT SOLD OUT BERLIN GATHERING

With their working lives spent looking at computer screens and drawing on tablets, it’s no wonder designers don’t usually get to meet fellow creatives in person. Forward Festival, held last Thursday and Friday (22 & 23.09.2022) at Kino International, offered a rare chance to come together. We headed to the ornate cinema to pay a visit to the sold-out event, which saw digital drawers and camera clickers from all over gather to chat design, creativity, and communication. There was no shortage of ideas as a line-up of 30 speakers showed off their portfolios and revealed insider knowledge in talks hosted by graphic designer Eike König. The line-up amounted to a who’s who of influential, on-trend creatives: color-blending 3D artist Vincent Schwenk, Type legends Grilli Type and deliciously sarcastic illustrator Mr Bingo and many more were in attendance.

Over at the workshop area, designers were honing their professional skills and getting portfolios critiqued at sessions on type design and – our personal favorite – collage making. The partner for the festival was the  Senate Department for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises, with the responsible State Secretary  Michael Biel taking to the stage. Berlin creatives were well represented too: typographer Charlotte Rohde and artist Ju Schnee took part, as did  collective _thek, who printed shirts in support of creatives and small business owners. After all this input, we left the retro venue inspired and eager to sketch, shoot and illustrate to our heart’s content.

TACOS, NATURAL WINE AND ART IN THE HEART OF MARZAHN — ARMA STREET FESTIVAL

TACOS, NATURAL WINE AND ART IN THE HEART OF MARZAHN — ARMA STREET FESTIVAL

A one-day street festival of art, food, drinks and music, Arma(“Art Marzahn”) is a collaboration between curator Rory Kirk-Duncan, Berlin-based beverage brands Avaa and Volée, and creative agency No Service 24/7. The festival takes place in the Georg Knorr area in Marzahn where a mixed-use neighborhood of residential and commercial space by Chipperfield Architects is set to open in 2027. Coinciding with Art Week, the program begins on Saturday (17.09.2022) from 14h with sculptural and multimedia works by the artist Malte Bartsch. Both Kirk-Duncan and curator Annalena Amthor will be giving guided tours throughout the day, and you won’t go hungry either: food comes courtesy of tacos by Victoria Tacos, sourdough pizza by Jaja and grilled cheese and desserts by Pars. For drinks, ViniCulture and Nature’s Calling will be serving natural wine and Avaa Verjus & Volée aperitifs (non-alcoholic versions also available).

Marzahn kombucha label Bouche, who have their brewery at the location, will also open their doors to visitors to celebrate three years in the district. If you’re curious to see what a commercial sized “scoby” culture looks like, this is your chance! Arma is just five minutes walk from S-Bahn Marzahn, which is just 25 minutes from Alexanderplatz – not as daunting a journey as you might think!

FAVOURITES FILM FESTIVAL — JOIN THE JURY WITH FIVE DAYS OF COMPETITION SCREENINGS AT CITY KINO WEDDING

FAVOURITES FILM FESTIVAL — JOIN THE JURY WITH FIVE DAYS OF COMPETITION SCREENINGS AT CITY KINO WEDDING

Film festivals conjure images of closed-door screenings, invite-only parties and elite juries. Favourites Film Festival (21–25.09.2022) has none of that exclusive glitz; it’s an event everyone can attend by buying a €7.50 film ticket (or a festival pass for €35). Screened at the stylish 1960s City Kino Wedding, the program’s feature-length films and documentaries have been picked with public appeal in mind. Things kick off with French film Softie, a coming-of-age drama about a ten-year-old whose life is changed when a new teacher sees his potential. The screening will be followed by a talk with director Samuel Theis. Other highlights include Flee, a Danish film that’s a rare example of an animated documentary, and Olga, which tells the story of a 15-year-old Ukrainian gymnast exiled in Switzerland. At each screening, audience members submit their ratings, with the winning title shown again at a special event on Sunday. A film award bestowed by regular cinema-goers? Now that’s movie democracy.
