HANDPICKED DESIGN CLASSICS, VINTAGE FASHION AND CASHMERE CARIDGANS AT THE OH VINTAGE X LEOROSA POP-UP

HANDPICKED DESIGN CLASSICS, VINTAGE FASHION AND CASHMERE CARIDGANS AT THE OH VINTAGE X LEOROSA POP-UP

Let’s admit: it can be frustrating when you compliment a friend’s beautiful jacket for them to reply “it’s vintage”. It’s the realization that you’ll never be able to wear the same unique item yourself. Luckily, you’ll be able to get some standout garments of your own at the Oh Vintage pop-up this weekend at June in Friedrichshain  (02.-03.04.2022). We’ve long admired Oh Vintage founder Verena Glup’s ability to find and curate timeless designer classics and “Oh wow!” pieces that give the shop its name (we’re thinking Versace three-pieces and black and rainbow Moschino leather jackets from the 90s). For this latest event, a selection of pieces will stand side-by-side with Leorosa’s collection of vibrant cardigans made in Italy from the highest quality merino wool and cashmere. Founded in 2019 by Paolina Leccese and Julian Taffel, the Cologne and New York-based brand has featured in multiple Vogue publications, GQ, Tatler and W Magazine to name a few. The simplicity of the pieces combine with their color maximalism: think bright cardis, polos and gilets with contrasting piping and mini animal print collars. Moreover, this event is a triple whammy, since the pop-up is in June, a minimalist multidisciplinary exhibition and venue space established in 2017 by Marie-Christine Molitor, frequently hosting discussions, local artists and events alike. Time to get suited and booted and start searching for that dream vintage find.

STUDIOVISITS X MARSANO — VISITING ARTIST AND DESIGNER SARAH ILLENBERGER

STUDIOVISITS X MARSANO — VISITING ARTIST AND DESIGNER SARAH ILLENBERGER

Where do you get your ideas? You can ask Sarah Illenberger this very question when the artist and designer opens up her studio to a small group of visitors next Thursday (31.03.2022). The atelier event is a collaboration between the floral artists at Marsano and StudioVisits and is the latest in a series of Berlin artist visits. Illenberger’s work is known for drawing on the environment, animals, plants and landscapes – whether it’s making a cocktail dress out of lettuce or turning a pomegranate into a hand grenade. Her visual art is a mainstay in magazines and shop windows of brands like Hermès and it’s easy to see why: Illenberger is a master of materials, meticulously handcrafting intricate arrangements with simple everyday objects. It’s a quality visible in her illustrations and objects – like the Slowlex, Illenberger’s alternative to an expensive wristwatch. She was inspired to create it by an empty snail shell she found while walking in the garden of her home in Italy. What else is currently waiting to be transformed into art? Grab yourself a ticket and you can see for yourself.

THE BERLIN FASHION SUMMIT — AN ONLINE CONFERENCE ON THE FUTURE OF FASHION

THE BERLIN FASHION SUMMIT — AN ONLINE CONFERENCE ON THE FUTURE OF FASHION

Sustainability in fashion: it’s an enduring topic of conversation. And while a lot of progress has been made in recent years, there’s still much room for improvement. Fashion Week Berlin (14-20.03.2022) provides an opportunity to find out just what has to change. With shows by local and global brands, this year’s FW offers visual inspiration as well as a lot of intellectual input, not least at the 202030 Symposium – The Berlin Fashion Summit. The aim of this online event is to strengthen ties between fashion, science and politics in order to boost this transformation. The three-day program includes panels and critical conversations with experts such as Aras Baskauskas from brand Christy Dawn, Prof. Dilys Williams from the Centre for Sustainable Fashion at London College of Fashion and Renana Krebs from eco-friendly fabric developer Algaeing.

The conference is all about “Regenerative Sustainability” and will welcome Berlin-based players such as Circular.Fashion and Rebound Stuff, offering fashion fiends exciting insights and inspiration. With this program, FW is not just about spotting new favorites for the season, but questioning your own consumer behavior and getting a glimpse of fashion’s sustainable future.

FAVORITE READS SHARED LIVE ON INSTAGRAM — VORLESER_INNEN MODERN BOOK CLUB

FAVORITE READS SHARED LIVE ON INSTAGRAM — VORLESER_INNEN MODERN BOOK CLUB

The experience of having someone read a book to you is nothing short of wonderful. You close your eyes, immerse yourself in another world, and emerge feeling inspired to read the book yourself. It’s a feeling Elena Shirin Meger and Caroline Bushra von der Goltz, founders of online book club Vorleser_innen, know very well. Every week, the pair invite interesting people to share their favorite literature live on Instagram. After sharing book extracts, the hosts and their guests answer questions sent in advance by the community. Elena, a coach and mindfulness trainer, first came up with the idea during a Vipassana meditation retreat. She joined forces with Caroline and they launched the project during the 2020 lockdown as a virtual place for closeness, exchange and inspiration.

Guests have included Hamburg artist and illustrator Eva Dietrich, who read from the 2000 book “All about Love” by bell hooks (AKA Gloria Jean Watkins) in which the American feminist describes the “transformative power” of love as a form of goodwill, sympathy and care. It’s one of many books that have featured on the channel. To join the next reading from Mehtap Sert check out the channel and get yourself a club membership.

MAERZMUSIK 2022 — THE FESTIVAL FOR CONTEMPORARY ISSUES CELEBRATES STROLLING IN MUSIC AT THE GROPIUS BAU, ELECTRONIC PIONEERING SPIRIT AT THE PLANETARIUM AND FLUXUS AT SAVVY CONTEMPORARY

MAERZMUSIK 2022 — THE FESTIVAL FOR CONTEMPORARY ISSUES CELEBRATES STROLLING IN MUSIC AT THE GROPIUS BAU, ELECTRONIC PIONEERING SPIRIT AT THE PLANETARIUM AND FLUXUS AT SAVVY CONTEMPORARY

Challenging times call for small mental oases. One proven way to find them? Music! Since 2002, thanks to the Berliner Festspiele, we can look forward to musical escapism in early spring; MaerzMusik takes us sonically to regions within ourselves that might otherwise be less explored. The preface to the Festival für Zeitfragen puts it aptly: “In view of the uncertainty, vulnerability and transformations that characterize our present, we want to raise the question of how we can relate in different and diverse ways”. Well said. But what does it sound like? The opportunity to find out is already offered by the opening on 18.03. (two slots: starting at 17 & 21h) in the spacious Gropius Bau with a temporary garden with maze-like paths… Inside, you can stroll for three hours to sounds and musical archipelagos in the atrium, corridors and exhibition spaces – including Satch Hoyt’s “Hair Combing Circle 1884-1885 (2017/2022)” a piece for 18 performers. Here you’ll find “The Circle Flute” performances by Klangforum Wien with solo-works by Rebecca Saunders, Georges Asperghis, Toshio Hosokawa, and Salvatore Sciarrino. Music doesn’t just move the brain, it’s for the body too.

The day after the opening, the impressive work of African-American musician and Fluxus artist, the late Benjamin Patterson, will be heard elsewhere: at Savvy Contemporary, his work will be reflected and honored with performances, lectures, and film screenings, reinterpreted by scholars, artists and curators. Original scores and objects will be seen and heard alongside compositions, performances and videos. The extensive Patterson archive comes into action in this multidisciplinary curatorial approach from Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung, Kamila Metwaly and Berno Odo Polzer. Another highlight of this year’s program is the tribute to 90-year-old sound pioneer Éliane Radigue. Her work will be brought to life and includes a live presentation of her musical creations, with the 17-part concert cycle under the sound direction of François J. Bonnet, alias Kassel Jaeger, at the Zeiss-Großplanetarium. A minimalist electroacoustic milestone. The festival finale sounds equally promising: the closing weekend of 26.03. and 27.03. is themed “Field Recording”, with some audible surprises awaiting you around Weddinger Nettelbeckplatz… A festival like Berlin itself: diverse, multi-layered and surprising.
