INTERIOR INSPIRATION: REOPENING OF THE MADE.COM SHOWROOM & PANEL TALK WITH SCHNEID STUDIO

INTERIOR INSPIRATION: REOPENING OF THE MADE.COM SHOWROOM & PANEL TALK WITH SCHNEID STUDIO

The feel of a rattan weave cannot be replicated on our computer screens, unfortunately. Nor can the velvety feeling that a matte ceramic surface creates in the hand. It’s a wonderful thing that we can venture offline to experience in-person the different materials and textures we might want to bring back home. One good reason to do exactly that right now – or better, two good reasons: on 12.02.2022, Made.com’s showroom reopened after a long break, and with a fresh look. On two floors and over 500 square meters, the showroom of the British home goods company now offers lounge furniture as well as selected products from its line. To inaugurate the updated showroom and its homey ambience, Made.com has invited the Lübeck Schneid Studio and us from Cee Cee. On 09.03., we’ll be able to ask designer Niklas – one half of the celebrated Schneid Studio design team – questions about their elegant designs, their design philosophy, ongoing ceramic trends and, of course, the vase they designed exclusively for Made.com. As self-confessed Schneid Studio fans, we are very much looking forward to the opportunity to give space to the topic of design, sustainable consumption and ceramics and to have the chance to learn something from the professionals. Of course, we’re also excited to welcome spectators for the evening. And because all good things come in threes, here’s the icing on the cake: the Berlin-based studio Lilo will have flowers for purchase. Design for every sense, so to speak – and every room.

WHAT IS HAPPENING TO OUR PLANET? — KLASSE KLIMA INVITES  YOU TO THE VIRTUAL “NEW EUROPEAN BAUHAUS” CONFERENCE

WHAT IS HAPPENING TO OUR PLANET? — KLASSE KLIMA INVITES  YOU TO THE VIRTUAL “NEW EUROPEAN BAUHAUS” CONFERENCE

How can we develop a critical, and yet creative, constructive view of climate policy and ideally develop new ideas and solutions? This weekend is an opportunity to explore these questions, because they’re precisely the issues that the collective Klasse Klima is tackling. Launched as a self-organized, interdisciplinary seminar series at the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK) in 2019, the project has evolved into a dynamic collective of designers, activists, students, researchers and practitioners. In September 2021, the Klasse Klima project won the New European Bauhaus Rising Stars Award in the “Interdisciplinary Education Models” category, setting the stage for a symposium taking place this weekend. The conference is part of the New European Bauhaus series and is titled “New European Bauhaus. For a Just Design of Climate Politics“. In terms of the topics at hand, the organizers of Klasse Klima will be addressing the so-called “European Green Deal” (EGD), i.e. the proposal that could make Europe the first climate-neutral continent.

The aim of the symposium is to explore, through panels and workshops, artistic and creative strategies to act for climate justice in politics. It’s a field of research that’s as exciting as it is complex! And if you’re looking for a more active point of contact: the two-day conference will be rounded off with the “Collective Sundown City Walk”, a kind of group “promenadological” excursion, so you can ‘walk the talk’, so to speak. The walk starts at the Bauhaus DIY store, continues to the Gropius Bau and ends at the Bauhaus Archive, accompanied by music. Maybe it’s a first step towards a better climate policy? In any case, it’s a pretty good opportunity to think and learn more about this important topic.

LOUMI: EXCLUSIVE 12-COURSE MENUS AT SECRET LOCATION IN NEUKÖLLN

LOUMI: EXCLUSIVE 12-COURSE MENUS AT SECRET LOCATION IN NEUKÖLLN

A piece of advice: don’t give up while looking for your dinner! It might just be tucked away behind an unassuming unmarked door on a busy Neukölln street. And yes, you do enter through a very dark Hof and up some stairs to a private apartment, but once inside you will be met with charming hosts, a handful of friendly strangers and an unforgettable dining experience. Loumi began in 2017 when Mical Rosenblat and Karl-Louis Kömmler started cooking small dinners for friends. Spurred on by positive feedback and a passion for natural, seasonal, regional and ethical ingredients, they developed a private dining concept held monthly in different locations across Berlin and Hamburg. In 2018 they decided to offer the same (ever-changing) Loumi Tasting Menu, but this time in a more private, intimate setting with a table that seats just six guests.

On the evening we visited, twelve impeccably presented and truly innovative dishes were served. They included “Jerusalem Artichoke with Mushroom Fumet and Yolk”, “Pollock with Koji Sauce, Sea Urchin XO and Pumpkin”, as well as two personal highlights: “Maitake with Yeast Sabayon & Corn Miso” and “Nishiki Rice Pudding with Citrus Salad & Kokotu Sugar”. The passion these two hosts have is clear: always happy to discuss tasting notes, the cooking process or from where each of the ingredients were sourced.. The seafood comes from Berlin’s Fish Klub, meat from Wagyu Zucht Nordfriesland and a selection of the wines from Rocket Wine. If you are looking for something out of the ordinary where high-quality, innovative dishes are served alongside plenty of interaction with the hosts and other guests alike, look no further.

ARABIC MUSIC DAYS — DISCOVER A WORLD OF ART, FILM, POETRY AND LIVE MUSIC AT THE PIERRE BOULEZ SAAL

ARABIC MUSIC DAYS — DISCOVER A WORLD OF ART, FILM, POETRY AND LIVE MUSIC AT THE PIERRE BOULEZ SAAL

It’s no secret that recent years have left us a bit trapped travel-wise, though I think we can all agree that music has provided a safe haven with teleportation powers that break these mental – and geographical – borders. Though experiencing the vast culture of the Arabian region seems like a distant dream, the Arabic Music Days celebrate melodies of the region across five days at the stunning Pierre Boulez Saal. Here, the first days of March and spring’s song are gracefully ushered in the 360 elliptical concert hall by architect Frank Gehry.

Allowing us to merge with sound and Arab melody, the program simultaneously commemorates the hall’s fifth anniversary since its opening in 2017. Curated by Iraqi musician Naseer Shamma, the line up consists of five musical performances; Shamma himself performs the oud, an ancient arabic pear-shaped stringed instrument he’s been mastering since the age of 12 on the program’s fourth day. The opening by Trio Abozekrys includes the Saz, Oud and Percussion; Maqamat Trio adds vocals, the Djoza and piano; the Ney – a flute that’s one of the oldest instruments still used, features in Hani Al Badri Trio’s performance “Teryola“. The program concludes with the Gharbi Twins Trio, who play a mesmerising blend of the Qanun, Violin and Oud. It doesn’t end there: the days are complemented by a digital online exhibition of Iraqi visual artist Jaber Alwan and a streaming of “Benzine” by Tunisian director Sarra Abidi. If you’re a lover of poetry, an exclusive video work of Oman’s Saif al-Rahbi reading his creations is not to be missed. A perfect warm up for a sunny spring or trip abroad? We think so.

BERLINALE: FILM FESTIVAL RETURNS WITH A FULL PROGRAM OF PHYSICAL SCREENINGS — READ OUR 2022 PICKS

BERLINALE: FILM FESTIVAL RETURNS WITH A FULL PROGRAM OF PHYSICAL SCREENINGS — READ OUR 2022 PICKS

The Berlinale is back – and this time it’s physical. For the first time since the start of the pandemic, Berlin’s annual film gala is staging a fully in-person program thanks to reduced-capacity screenings and mask mandates. The six-day line up, which kicks off on 10.02.2022 with the premiere of François Ozon’s “Peter von Kant”, features 256 feature films and shorts. To help you navigate the packed program, here are our top picks. As always, the Festival is happening all over the city with the Berlinale Goes Kiez program of smaller screenings. It’s a great opportunity to visit a cinema you may never have been to (BrotfabrikKino in Weißensee or City Kino in Wedding, perhaps?). The Kiez program is being updated daily – see here for the latest. The center of the action is at Potsdamer Platz, where the hottest tickets will be for the Competition films: this year’s favorites include Mikhaël Hers’s “The Passengers of the Night” starring Charlotte Gainsbourg, and the historical drama “Call Jane”, which portrays a married woman’s battle to get an abortion and stars Elizabeth Banks and Sigourney Weaver.

The Berlinale Special Gala returns to the Festival’s biggest venue – the Friedrichstadt-Palast – with a premiere of Isabelle Huppert’s latest film “About Joan”, co-staring Lars Eidinger. Around half of the Special program is made up of documentaries, including “This Much I Know to Be True”, which follows rock legend Nick Cave’s collaboration with composer Warren Ellis. A traditional audience favorite, Panorama is back with an globespanning selection including “Convenience Store”, a surrealist portrayal of modern slavery set in a Moscow supermarket. The first tickets for this year’s festival go on sale Monday 07.02. Make sure you log in at 10h sharp: seats for top picks are set to sell out in minutes.

You can view the full Berlinale program online. Tickets for screenings are available online starting 07.02.2022, 10h. For more information, see the website.
