FINE CUISINE AND A CONVERSATION WITH GERMANY’S YOUNGEST MICHELIN-STARRED CHEF — DRIVE CULINARY TABLE TALK

If you’ve ever had the pleasure of dining at a Michelin-starred restaurant, you might have asked yourself: who are the men and women behind my meal? Giving you a glimpse into the life of a gourmet chef is the foodie-focused Drive Culinary “Table Talk” at VW’s Drive Salon next Monday (15.11.2021). Part-talk, part-gourmet dinner, the intimate event will host top chef Julia Komp, who became Germany’s youngest Michelin-starred cook in 2016 and now runs Sahila restaurant in Cologne. For the first part of the evening, you will join Komp in the Drive dining space as she tells the story of her ascent up the restaurant industry ladder and how she hung up her apron to go on a 14-month recipe-gathering trip around the world. After the talk you will take a seat at your table for a taste-based journey of your own with a three-course dinner courtesy of Jonas Zörner, head chef at the Michelin-starred Golvet on Potsdamer Platz. The meat and veggie menus include the likes of eight-day matured trout with hazelnut, mojo rojo and mojo verde, and a Jerusalem artichoke Chawanmushi with currant, carrot and pumpkin seeds. To accompany Zörner’s creations you will be served perfectly-paired wines to top off a gastronomic evening par excellence.

DESIGN PIECES FROM THE CALIFORNIAN DESERT — POP-UP STORE WITH ANDREA ZITTEL AT SPRÜTH MAGERS

For more than 20 years, American artist Andrea Zittel has lived in the desert near Joshua Tree National Park. Less than three hours outside of Los Angeles, the area could not feel further from the big city. Zittel has established herself in the wilderness with a home and an arts center where people can live, experiment and work together as part of her A-Z Westproject. With this community she explores a question that has always informed her work: how do we want to live and what material things are necessary to make that possible? Most of the collective’s necessary items are created on site from simple materials: ceramic bowls (called “A-Z Containers”) are shaped in the studios and used as all-purpose tableware alongside homespun carpets and textiles, and all serve as an ongoing meditation on the objects in our lives. Back in Berlin, Sprüth Magers is presenting these pieces not in a classic gallery exhibition, but as part of a pop-up store.

The space, which used to house the Image Movement store, seems almost purpose-built for this show: every bowl, garment and wall piece blends seamlessly into the wooden ambience, which is itself a work of art (created by Rosemarie Trockel and Thea Djordjadze). The recessed bookcases now house Zittel’s beautiful ceramics, some of which are painted white, others natural – each one unique. They are all made to Zittel’s specifications by the people who fill A-Z West with life. The pieces exist in harmony with each designer’s handwriting and style and the artist’s larger blueprint. Anything purchased from A-Z West directly supports the community: all proceeds flow back into the studios and directly benefit the artists who work there.

BARKIN’KITCHEN X C/O BERLIN: AMERICAN PHOTOGRAPHY MEETS JAPANESE CUISINE AT THE CULINARY ART NIGHT

Little excites the senses more than delicious food and thought-provoking art, and the new edition of Culinary Art Night at C/O Berlin will combine those two pleasures for an evening of photography and great cuisine. The event begins with an exclusive guided tour of two current C/O exhibitions: U.S. photographer Lee Friedlander’s retrospective, which presents his six-decade-long exploration of the medium, and German-based U.S. photographer Peter Miller’s “Dear Photography”, where you can rediscover photo art through new eyes with Miller’s playful and experimental darkroom techniques. Afterwards, you can share your impressions and delight your palate at the C/O Berlin Café over a welcome drink and Japanese-inspired courses from the Barkin’Kitchen team with DJs providing the soundtrack. And there’s more: you can continue your C/O evening at Babylon Kino Mitte, where, at midnight, Peter Miller himself will be showing rarely-seen 16- and 35mm footage at the Videoart at Midnight screening. It’s a culture-packed program that leaves nothing to be desired.

EUROPEAN ARTHOUSE CINEMA DAY — A PROGRAM FOR FILM FANS IN BERLIN AND BEYOND

With the days getting shorter and the weather chillier, it’s the perfect time to spend your Sunday cozied up at the cinema. To get you in the mood, the International Confederation of Arthouse Cinemas (CICAE) is hosting its sixth European Arthouse Cinema Day on Sunday 14.11 to celebrate the diversity of European film. More than 650 cinemas in 36 countries will show specially selected European films, with each cinema curating its own program. We’ve gathered some of the top flicks showing at the 25 participating cinemas in Berlin. Die Unbeugsamen (11h), a German documentary about women in politics from 1950 until reunification, is playing at Eva Lichtspiele Kino in Wilmersdorf. Meanwhile, Delphi Filmpalast’s screening of the short film The Human Voice (14h) will include a recorded interview with Spanish director Pedro Almodovar and actress Tilda Swinton. Sputnik Kino at Südstern will show a Romanian documentary, a comedy from Estonia and a preview of the film Mitra – a drama by Dutch director and writer Kaweh Modiri.

The cinema in the Hackesche Höfe is highlighting films by, with and for women beginning with the documentary Speer goes to Hollywood (11h), accompanied by an interview with director Vanessa Lapa. A German children’s film about tough girls (“Ente gut! Mädchen allein zu Haus”, 14.30h) will follow, and to close the day there will be the screening of the film Sex Worker (19h30), which will also include a Q&A with the film’s star. And: if you need a break from the cinema screen, head to Babylon Kreuzberg where you can browse through film memorabilia at the poster bazaar.

URSTROM KAESE — GOURMET CHEESES FROM BRANDENBURG AND MUCH MORE AT THE MARKTHALLE NEUN CHEESE FESTIVAL

With its knobbly charcoal black rind concealing a ripened, rich center, the Mulberry Weichkaese is what you might call a challenging cheese. But then cheesemakers Paul Thomas and Yule Seifert, founders of Urstrom Kaese, never went into the business to make run-of-the-mill Emmental or Cheddar. The British-Belgian duo spent years learning about the art and science of cheesemaking before starting their own creamery in Schöbendorf, a tiny village in Brandenburg 70km south of Berlin. There, they set to work creating cheeses that don’t fit the mold, so to speak. The result is three varieties: the fresh, spreadable Urstrom Frischkaese, the intense and creamy Baruther Urstromtaler and the World Cheese Award-winning Mulberry Weichkaese. All three have a unique, memorable flavor which is thanks to the pair’s scientific backgrounds – Paul studied biochemistry and Yule studied engineering – but also the happy cows that produce the milk.

The bovines in question are a Jersey herd who are allowed to graze on 400 hectares of outdoor pastures to produce the rich, creamy milk that makes the breed famous. If you want to sample the cheeses yourself, this week is the perfect time as Markthalle Neun returns with its Cheese Berlin festival (12–14.11.2021) with three days of tasting and talks. You can taste and buy the Urstrom Kaese range at the Alte Milch shop in the Markthalle – check out the full festival program online.
