BERLIN SCIENCE WEEK — GLIMPSE INTO THE FUTURE WITH TEN DAYS OF WORKSHOPS, PERFORMANCES AND TALKS FROM THE BRIGHTEST MINDS

BERLIN SCIENCE WEEK — GLIMPSE INTO THE FUTURE WITH TEN DAYS OF WORKSHOPS, PERFORMANCES AND TALKS FROM THE BRIGHTEST MINDS

You’ve probably walked up and down the runways at Tempelhofer Feld at least once or twice. But what about Berlin’s other abandoned airport, Tegel? West Berlin’s air hub has always been strictly off limits to the public, but that’s all about to change. Starting next Thursday (04.11.2021), you can go behind the scenes at the former airport with special walking tours as part of this year’s Berlin Science Week (01–10.11.2021). As well as getting a close-up view of the iconic Gmp-designed terminal, you’ll discover how the site is being transformed into a center for future urban tech. Innovation is what this ten-day hybrid festival is all about, with 200+ panel talks, workshops, performances and exhibitions – most of which are free to attend. The center of the action is the Museum für Naturkunde, which will be hosting the likes of Braindates(05–06.11), a kind of speed date which lets you dive into a topic that interests you by joining a like-minded participant for an hour-long chat.

This is Berlin, and so dance music also has its place in the program with The Dance Floor is a Political Space!, a panel discussion on 05.11 which explores how the city’s threatened dancefloors function as havens of social experimentation. Meanwhile, the Visualising Time and Space talk on 10.11 will see designer Anna Farkas discuss her Red Dot-winning circular calendar. There are also tech-filled digital tours, including Building Better Batteries, which shows you how these crucial power stores are made, and a sneak peak inside Bessy II – Berlin’s own mini-CERN particle accelerator. Finally, there’s a chance to get hands-on with a workshop at the Futurium where you can learn practical ways to reduce the amount of waste you produce (02.11). Oh, and while you’re there: take a look at the Futurium’s permanent exhibition for some more future-tech fun.

VOO STORE X UDK — FRESH COLLAB FEATURING FASHION-FORWARD HOODIES BY DESIGN STUDENTS

VOO STORE X UDK — FRESH COLLAB FEATURING FASHION-FORWARD HOODIES BY DESIGN STUDENTS

Hoodies: most of us have at least one in our wardrobe. For me they offer the perfect mix of comfort and practicality. Breathing new life into this classic garment is the task of fashion students at the Universität der Künste Berlin. In collaboration with Kreuzberg fashion retailer Voo Store, the aspiring designers have created a collection that showcases their experiments in redefining this wardrobe staple. The pieces will be presented at the launch event tonight (28.10.2021) at the Kreuzberg shop and will be available for a limited time in-store and online. To celebrate the launch you can also take a tour of the UdK buildings as part of the legendary Rundgang (29.–31.10). Normally held in summer, the event was pushed back on account of the pandemic, meaning now is your chance to get a glimpse at the work of the institution’s art and design students. For the first time, the tour will also be accompanied by an online platform that lets you explore students’ work created during the covid-induced online semesters.

PEEK INTO THE FUTURE: AUGMENTED REALITY MEETS BEATS BY SASCHA BRAEMER AT THE DRIVE LIVE AFTER-WORK EVENT

PEEK INTO THE FUTURE: AUGMENTED REALITY MEETS BEATS BY SASCHA BRAEMER AT THE DRIVE LIVE AFTER-WORK EVENT

What will it be like to drive in the future? Most of us don’t know: unless you are an industry insider, chances are you’ve never had a sneak peek at a next-gen vehicle. That’s what makes the current mobility exhibition at Drive on Friedrichstraße particularly cool: it’s full of cutting-edge cars that you can experience right now, plus interactive exhibits that preview the auto tech of tomorrow. A good time to check out the exhibition is the Drive Live after-work event on 28.10.2021, which blends electric cars with electronic music from DJ Sascha Braemer. Starting from 19h you can visit the laid back lounge-style setting for a program of networking and lively exchange, including a conversation with Sascha where he shares his personal views on mobility and sustainability. And then there’s the exhibition, the highlight of which has got to be an immersive demonstration of Audi’s augmented reality head-up display. In a special light tunnel, you can view from the driver’s perspective how the car superimposes vehicle data and navigation directions directly on the road ahead. Does tech like this sound too space-age to be true? If you need convincing, you can check it out yourself by booking a test drive (subject to availability!) in one of the latest Audi cars. Not bad for an autumnal after-work Thursday…

REPAIR & UPCYCLING WORKSHOPS AND INSTORE ART — LIFEWEAR DAYS AT UNIQLO

REPAIR & UPCYCLING WORKSHOPS AND INSTORE ART — LIFEWEAR DAYS AT UNIQLO

Broken buttons, torn seams and faded colors – three sure signs it’s the end of the road for your favorite jeans. But before banishing your beloved garments to the bin, why not try your hand at repairing them with help from the fashion-forward team at Uniqlo. The clothing brand is offering free workshops for fixing up your clothes at the “Second Life Studio” located in the Uniqlo Flagship Store on Tauentzienstraße in Charlottenburg. Open every Thursday, Friday and Saturday, the studio is offering workshops every second Saturday from this week that will show you how to repair or repurpose any Uniqlo item – though you can of course use your new skills for any garment. They’re part of the LifeWear Days program that includes special workshops and colorful in-store artwork showing scenes of Berlin city life from illustrator Laura Breiling. At the “Paint Your Jeans” session (13.11.2021) you can give old jeans new flair by applying fresh colors or upcycling them into a handy bag.

If your items are still wearable and you would prefer them to go to a good cause, you can also donate them to the Berliner Stadtmission. The organization is a partner for the Second life Studio and provides clothing and other support to people in difficult circumstances. You can help the cause by handing in your items next time you shop at any of Uniqlo’s Berlin stores. Speaking of shopping: once you’ve got your jeans back into shape, why not take the chance to refresh your winter wardrobe with some pieces from the A/W LifeWear collection. Pick from natural-fiber knits, Heattech undergarments that use cutting-edge materials to keep you warm, and the compact Ultra Light Down jackets made from recycled or certified responsible down. Our favorite is the vest, which is a perfect add-on to wear under your favorite jacket for extra warmth.

OUT NOW: LIMITED EDITION BERLIN BAGS FROM CEE CEE X UCON ACROBATICS — JOIN US FOR THE LAUNCH EVENT AT POOL

We’re fans of Berlin – that much is clear. And as you might expect, we’re always out and about looking for exciting places, people and ideas. One brand we’re particular fans of is ideal for this on-the-go lifestyle: Ucon Acrobatics. This Berlin-based bag maker creates the perfect packs for a busy life around town, with designs that are made to fit your laptop, protect your back and keep all your belongings safe and dry while keeping you looking sleek and cool. Since we’re such fans, it was only natural to want to team up with the brand again for another collab. A while ago we created a bespoke Berlin pattern for the Ucon Acrobatics charity initiative, and the design was so popular we’re now making it available as part of the Ucon Acrobatics x Cee Cee Capsule Collection, which consists of the Hajo and Jasper backpacks and the Jona cross-body bag. The launch for the collection takes place tonight (07.10.2021) and you are invited to celebrate! The venue for the party is Pool, a service that lets you rent clothes and accessories instead of buying them, and their team has kindly let us use their beautiful space for our event. Come say hi, have a Brlo beer, and try out the Ucon Acrobatics x Cee Cee bags (or, if you can’t wait, try them out virtually using our AR filter @ceeceeberlin) Want to get yours? The bags are available on the Ucon Acrobatics website.
