TAKE A LITTLE TRIP: REDISCOVER THE CITY WITH ON AND LOCAL EXPERTS

TAKE A LITTLE TRIP: REDISCOVER THE CITY WITH ON AND LOCAL EXPERTS

Who doesn’t want to see the whole wide world? Of course, that’s no easy feat. But discovering something new? We can always be on the lookout for that. All you have to do is take a good look around: pay attention to your habits, take the road less traveled, set new goals, get involved, and get going. And that’s exactly what On invites us to do. The Swiss brand that set out eleven years ago to revolutionize the way we all feel about running has opened a travel agency to help us step out of our comfort zone: Welcome to “The Cloudaway Travel Agency” on Sanderstraße. Open four days a week, this is the place to explore if you’re hungry for travel. The recommendations here come, of course, from travel agents with local knowledge and experience: Paul Kominek from The Travel Almanac; Jorge Alva (aka Urbanentdecker); and Manuel Goller from design studio New Tendency. They’re all eager to share their favorite destinations and top tips with you to help you add some unforgettable moments to your travel diary. And those moments are closer than you think. How about taking a culinary adventure to Baldon in Wedding – or maybe packing your weekender for the Uckermark? Or are you looking for a trip within walking distance? Then check out contemporary video art in the Stoschek Collection behind an old Plattenbau facade in Mitte, or stop to marvel at urban art that you might otherwise whiz past without a second glance. If you can’t make it to the Cloudaway Travel Agency in person, you can, of course, find their tips online. See what adventures are waiting for you!

DIE BAR — MOBILE DRINKS STATION AND BARTENDER FOR STRESS-FREE PARTIES AND EVENTS

DIE BAR — MOBILE DRINKS STATION AND BARTENDER FOR STRESS-FREE PARTIES AND EVENTS

The candles are lit, the canapés are ready and the guests are arriving. But who’s taking care of the drinks? If you are the kind of person who likes to get some help and expertise hosting, why not leave the bar to the folks who actually make the mixers: Thomas Henry. Since summer 2021, the Berlin drinks company has been bringing their mixing expertise into homes and event spaces with Die Bar, a mobile station for tasty drinks. The all-inclusive package can be booked for any event, from garden parties to company celebrations, and is run by a professional bartender, who knows how to blend, shake, stir and, yes, mix it all. There are three packages to choose from, all with alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. The “Gin & Tonic” is, as the name suggests, dedicated to this classic and comes with five different gins and four tonics. The “Longdrink” menu spices things up by adding the likes of Horse’s Necks and Moscow Mules. For everyone who enjoys lighter drinks: there’s the “Aperitivo”, which serves up Berry Breezes and Rosé & Tonic perfect for any balcony moments or rooftop soirées. Your guests get to indulge in an expertly mixed drink or two but most importantly: you get to relax and spend some quality time with your favorite people. That’s what parties are for, right?

You can reserve Die Bar by sending details of your event, the number of guests and the desired date via the form online.

TAKE A PLATE — THE GRAND GELINAZ SHUFFLE BERLIN: A CULINARY EXPERIENCE AT MICHELBERGER

TAKE A PLATE — THE GRAND GELINAZ SHUFFLE BERLIN: A CULINARY EXPERIENCE AT MICHELBERGER

Have you ever heard of a food event where you can bring your own plate? Neither have we! The concept of “Take a Plate – The Grand Gelinaz” is to do just that: This Sunday (29.08.2021) this event will feature music, drinks, but most of all lots of culinary delights “shuffled” from chefs to Berlin for the first time. More precisely, in the courtyard and rooms of the Michelberger Hotel. But there are more players involved – the chefs from Horváth, Lode & Stijn, Annelies, and Kin Dee have joined forces with their local producers to conjure up a wide variety of dishes and courses for your plate. The whole thing is inspired by the recipes of “Gelinaz“, an international collective of chefs founded by food journalist and gastronomy networker Andrea Petrini. The vision behind it? In addition to the emergence of exciting new culinary creations, Take a Plate particularly wants to draw attention to the fact that gastronomy and agriculture go hand in hand, are mutually dependent and give the community a stage. What’s more, the audience will be involved and will not only be able to watch the cooking (or “performance”) and taste the food, but will be invited to engage in dialogue with all the participants. And in case you’re wondering what to do with the plate you brought from home – at Michelberger, there’s a dishwashing station so you can relax and rinse your plate yourself between courses. Feels almost like home – only a bit tastier maybe…

FROM SEOUL, NAGOYA AND TAIPEI TO BERLIN: ASIAN ART BOOKS AT GALLERY AND BOOKSHOP EINBUCH HAUS — RECOMMENDED BY NAYEON KIM

FROM SEOUL, NAGOYA AND TAIPEI TO BERLIN: ASIAN ART BOOKS AT GALLERY AND BOOKSHOP EINBUCH HAUS — RECOMMENDED BY NAYEON KIM

Whenever I visit gallery and bookshop EinBuch Haus I always fall in love with the handcrafted shelves highlighting all the art books and the carefully curated exhibitions. This August, I am particularly looking forward to visiting because of their new exhibition Assemble and mini art book fair Asian Artbook House (both until 28.08.2021). While the usual motto of the space is to present one book at a time, this month director Frau Kim decided to welcome a number of books by artists from four creative platforms in Asia. In the exhibition these books appear like art objects in a group show, while on the other side of the space you find art books waiting to be opened and read by visitors. This is where you will find the “Asian Artbook House”, with 24 rare art books and prints from different locations in Asia. After browsing Frau Kim’s social media channel to view the selections that are making their debut in Berlin, I pre-ordered the books for delivery at home. That said, it is also nice to visit and see the sample books in person and listen to stories about them, which Kim happily provides. Both the gallery and bookshop are friendly and inspiring spaces for art book lovers, collectors, graphic designers and those searching for something different and unique. Whatever your reason for going, you can expect to spend some time at the Pankow venue this August…

BERLIN QUESTIONS — FOUR DAYS OF EXPERT TALKS AND WORKSHOPS ON CITY LIFE OF THE FUTURE

BERLIN QUESTIONS — FOUR DAYS OF EXPERT TALKS AND WORKSHOPS ON CITY LIFE OF THE FUTURE

Want to discover how an abandoned New York railway became an oasis of urban greenery? Fancy getting a glimpse of future city life at a learning lab that floats on water? Then you’ll want to sign up for Berlin questions (11–14.08.2021), a four-day conference packed full of insights and inspiration on the sustainable metropolises of tomorrow. Under the motto “Metropolis: The New Now”, an international lineup of speakers explain how local solutions can solve global problems, such as architect Elizabeth Diller whose High Line project transformed a decaying rail bridge in New York into a flourishing park. But this program is not about passive listening: giving cities a future is a team effort, after all, and that’s what the Marathon day on Saturday 14.08. is all about. You are invited to the stage – either live at Floating Berlin or online – to give your own five-minute speech, performance or pitch on city life both today and tomorrow.

The unique rainwater basin of Floating Berlin will also host a deep dive program of discussions and workshops in partnership with architectural collective Raumlaborberlin (Saturday 14.08). Under the magnifying glass is the question of how technology, economics and society can help us create a truly sustainable future. You can take part in the whole program in person but also via The Virtual Now, an online platform which has been specially designed for the conference by Berlin’s Studio Waltz Binaire. The web environment lets you take part in the program and even meet your fellow attendees as avatars in a 3D visual space. The future, it seems, is already here…

Berlin questions takes place both physically and digitally. You can buy a conference ticket for both versions online.
