DISCOVER YOURSELF THROUGH INTUITIVE PAINTING WITH THULI WOLF — RECOMMENDED BY ANNA FALCK-YTTER

DISCOVER YOURSELF THROUGH INTUITIVE PAINTING WITH THULI WOLF — RECOMMENDED BY ANNA FALCK-YTTER

As grown-ups, we often neglect those deeply anchored, fundamental things that do us good. One of them is painting – an activity we all do as children and which helps us establish a more sensual connection to our inner being. As the year draws to a close and a new cycle begins, it’s the ideal moment – not least given all the uncertainties in today’s world – to take time for ourselves and rediscover the power of our instincts. At Thuli Wolf’s Intuitive Painting workshop you will learn how to use your intuition to perceive yourself in new ways, thus gaining a better understanding of your mind. You join Thuli at Stillpoint Spaces Berlin, where alongside an intimate circle of 15 participants you are told how to listen to your subconscious so you can enter into a dialog with yourself. Then it’s time to express it: through paint. The three principles that guide Thuli’s work are empathy, trust and a value-free space that allows you to open up. After the painting is over, Thuli invites group members to think about the dynamic between the art and themselves – a sort of therapy session to conclude this meditative, fun experience.

WEN CHENG: CHINESE NOODLES HAND-PULLED IN PRENZLAUER BERG — RECOMMENDED BY MAGDALENA KOMAR

WEN CHENG: CHINESE NOODLES HAND-PULLED IN PRENZLAUER BERG — RECOMMENDED BY MAGDALENA KOMAR

I have a soft spot for noodles. So when I tried the chunky, delicious variety offered at Wen Cheng, I was completely bewitched. The trick at this in-demand Prenzlauer Berg restaurant is to eat correctly: specifically, you have to mix your noodles with the oil before eating them. In fact, owner Rui Gao checked our table several times to check whether we had blended our dishes well enough to get the best taste. Only then do the flavors of chilli, Sichuan pepper, cinnamon, cumin, garlic and spring onion combine to make an explosion in your mouth. That’s the magic of hot oil! On the menu you’ll find two kinds of noodles: Biang Biang – served with either beef, tofu and shitake, or lamb and cumin – and Wen Cheng, a less oily option with additional pickles to bring freshness. Meanwhile, for smaller appetites there’s tofu or chicken Bao buns served with Szechuan pepper aioli. Incidentally, the name “Biang Biang” is inspired by the sound created when the noodles are slapped and stretched out in the kitchen (you can witness this yourself behind the restaurant’s counter!). The place is owned by brothers Rui and Peng Gao, who shared the story behind the name with us: Wen Cheng is a dying dialect spoken by their mother in the province of Zhejiang in China. By naming their restaurant Wen Cheng, they are keeping the memory of the family’s heritage alive.

WINTERY WALKS, MUSHROOM PICKING AND A STEAMBOAT RIDE ON WERBELLINSEE — RECOMMENDED BY LAURA IRIONDO

WINTERY WALKS, MUSHROOM PICKING AND A STEAMBOAT RIDE ON WERBELLINSEE — RECOMMENDED BY LAURA IRIONDO

Autumn is here and with it comes leisurely walks, cold fingertips, mushroom-filled baskets and chestnuts in your pockets. One destination to experience all this is a lake just north of Barnim: Werbellinsee. Not only does this area offer breathtaking views of beech and alder-lined shores, but it is also full of relics from the German Empire. Take the regional train from Gesundbrunnen and you are greeted at your destination by the listed Joachimsthal Kaiserbahnhof, a red timber-framed railway station built in 1898. From there it is only a few minutes’ walk through thicket to the Joachimsthal shoreline, from where you can take a left to walk 5km up the shore to Altenhof. If you head to the jetty in the center of the village you can pick up some filter coffee and a waffle to enjoy as you take in the surrounding nature. Picking mushrooms as you go, continue around the lake until you reach its southern tip – the “Süßer Winkel” (“Sweet Corner”) as it’s called. An idyllic wooden bridge leads to the other side and from here it is another 1.5km to the “Spring” jetty.

Admittedly, we overestimated the size of the lake’s perimeter – the full circuit is 30km – while the mushroom picking took us off our path. Thus it was a relief that we only had to wait ten minutes at the jetty before the historic Wiederhöft steamship (built in 1935) docked. Wrapped in colorful blankets, we made our way back to Joachimsthal overwater in what was the highlight of our excursion. The service operates until the end of October, so we definitely recommend visiting before then. 19th century German novelist Theodor Fontane called the Werbellinsee the most beautiful lake in Brandenburg. We think he was right.
