FLOTTE: FREE CITYWIDE CARGO BIKE RENTAL FOR SHOPPING SPREES AND KITA PICKUPS

FLOTTE: FREE CITYWIDE CARGO BIKE RENTAL FOR SHOPPING SPREES AND KITA PICKUPS

It’s amazing what you can squeeze into a cargo bike: a week’s worth of groceries, a new family of houseplants, and even four little youngsters. If you want to test out one of these contraptions for yourself, let us point you in the direction of Flotte. Since launching in 2018, this community-orientated bike rental service has built up a citywide network of 146 cargo cycles which you can reserve and ride. And the best part: the entire thing is free of charge. So whether you are heading to the Baumarkt, finally getting rid of all those Pfand bottles, or simply want to test one of these bulky beasts, all it takes is a few clicks. To rent, check the website for available bikes in your area, complete a short registration and reserve your cycle. You then take a booking form to your local pickup point, collect the key and away you go. The Flotte fleet has vehicles of all shapes and sizes, including models with child seats and cargo decks so you can pick the right wheels for the job. Simply return your cycle to the collection point when you are finished, and that’s it. You will be a three-wheeled fan in no time! (Text: Benji Haughton / Photos: Savannah van der Niet)

Flotte is a non-profit service run by bike owners club ADFC Berlin. Donations are welcome.

APPROACHABLE EMPLOYMENT LAW ADVICE IN ENGLISH FROM LEONIE THUM

Qualified, competent and friendly legal advice – too good to be true? Leonie Thum, solicitor and employment law specialist with over six years’ experience, proves it is possible. Founded in April 2020, her Neukölln practice advises employees both as individuals and collectively. Since graduating in 2011, Leonie has gained a range of experience including legal traineeships in Mainz, Tallinn and for a renowned Berlin law firm. Her services are available in English, with pro-bono advice for victims of discrimination and clients whose employment has been terminated. Housed in a former shop, Leonie’s practice is an attractive space in which sustainability plays a major role, with paper-free operations across the board and environmentally-friendly cleaning. As a client you are well looked after, with fresh juices from Bttr and Berlin-made kombucha plus a planned small gallery featuring local artworks. And with Leonie’s workshops (Corona-permitting) women lawyers will soon be able to come together and learn how to progress in a male-dominated industry. (Text: Sophie Döring / Photos: Delia Baum)

PRIVATE ACCESS: DISCOVERING EUROPE’S EXCLUSIVE ART COLLECTIONS

PRIVATE ACCESS: DISCOVERING EUROPE’S EXCLUSIVE ART COLLECTIONS

Ever wondered about the countless privately-owned art collections that exist all over Europe? All is revealed in Skadi Heckmüller’s book Private Access, which presents 90 places housing private art across Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Short, informative texts give an introduction to well-known exhibition venues such as the Museum Barberini in Potsdam or the Fondation Beyeler near Basel. But there are also insider tips well off the beaten track: for photography lovers the village of Kummerow in Mecklenburg is well worth a stop, with works by Ute and Werner Mahler, Thomas Demand and Wolfgang Tillmans displayed on the walls of a baroque castle. Meanwhile in the extensive grounds of the former studio of Georg Baselitz at Schloss Derneburg near Hildesheim, an American collector couple present top-class contemporary art. Down by Chiemsee lake is the village of Traunreut, where art dealer Heiner Friedrich – who co-initiated the renowned Dia Art Foundation in New York – runs an exhibition of light art by Dan Flavin. The guide provides useful navigation advice as well as local restaurant recommendations. Time to get planning your next art adventure! SUPERSMASH PING PONG PADDLES: BEAT YOUR OPPONENT IN STYLE

SUPERSMASH PING PONG PADDLES: BEAT YOUR OPPONENT IN STYLE

Like any good idea, Supersmash paddles started with a beer. Graphic designers and friends Frédéric Savioz and Ramon Valle would often play ping pong after work when they decided to put their skills together and create designer paddles. Three years after that beer, Supersmash was born. Designed between their Berlin and Switzerland homes, each Supersmash paddle design has a concept: from Black Hole (to draw in the ping pong ball), Dazzle (animalistic camouflage to go undetected by your opponent), and the marbled Alabaster. Their new collection features seven new paddles including Woman and the Sea illustrated by Carmi Grau. These ping pong paddles are made with Spruce and Rosewood and are as enjoyable to use as they are to look at. Using this interactive ping pong map you can find your nearest spot for a serious tournament, a friendly game with friends, or simply flaunt your stylish Supersmash paddle. Shop online or at a Berlin stocklist. We are also giving away a Supersmash paddle: details here.

SHIFT — SCHÖNEBERG HAIR SALON FOR TAILORED CUTS AND CUTTING–EDGE COLORS

SHIFT — SCHÖNEBERG HAIR SALON FOR TAILORED CUTS AND CUTTING–EDGE COLORS

This is the time of year when the sun and salt water have taken their toll on your hair, calling for some much needed tlc. Shift, hidden within an old post building in Schöneberg, is my current salon of choice for hair-based rejuvenation. Since opening in November 2018, the salon has been focused on sustainable hair services, from simple cuts right through to cutting-edge color treatments using the latest Aveda products. The stylist who cut my hair, co-founder Jörg Winkelmann, really took the time to discuss my needs and recommended a glossing to revitalize my hair’s natural color. But it isn’t just your hair that benefits here: the spacious interior featuring regularly-changing artworks combined with Jörg’s delightful head massages make the salon good for the soul too. The space is also high tech, with a state-of-the-art ventilation system which cycles the air twice an hour (handy in Corona times!) and creates power from waste heat. For a relaxing, tailored hair care experience, Shift is a cut above. (Text: Benji Haughton / Photos: Ramona Razaghmanesh & Shift)
