COMMUNITY-BASED AND SUSTAINABLE — LIVING THE FUTURE AT THE BUCKOWER FELDER

COMMUNITY-BASED AND SUSTAINABLE — LIVING THE FUTURE AT THE BUCKOWER FELDER

For many it’s a dream: a permanent place that you can truly call home. Head south to the Buckower Felder, where housing co-op Urban Coop Berlin eG has its latest building project, and you can make it real. Due to finish in 2023, the 70 apartments in three blocks can already be reserved, letting you actively shape your living space before you move in. Monthly information events let you meet your new neighbors and discover the site’s architecture and sustainable features, with the chance to influence decisions over common spaces and landscaping. On 24.9 there is a session on eco-construction with wood, a material used widely in the development. Behind the sustainable idea is architect Robert Ostmann, who was inspired by innovative cooperative projects in Zürich. The result is a community-oriented concept, with floor plans suited to young families as well as WG spaces for up to three residents featuring all en-suite bathrooms and common room access. As well as private balconies there are also spacious shared patios outside – the perfect place for barbecues with the neighbors. Sign us up! OUI-SCHORLE: BUBBLY WINE SPRITZERS FOR BALCONY DRINKS AND PARK PICNICS

OUI-SCHORLE: BUBBLY WINE SPRITZERS FOR BALCONY DRINKS AND PARK PICNICS

Balmy summer nights call for a bottle of something cool to enjoy with friends and we’ve found just the tipple with Oui-Schorle, a wine spritzer that combines German wines from the Palatinate with light bright sparkling water. The Kreuzberg-based company was founded in 2019 by Lukas von Rantzau, who after years travelling the world as a photographer and management consultant decided to give the drinks world some fizz. The spritzers he’s created – available in rosé and riesling varieties – are refreshingly dry and bubbly, with just the right ratio of wine to water. Both the pink and white varieties are in fact green: their manufacture is compensated to cut the climate impact. Another reason to say “Oui” to these summer bottles. Oui-Schorle is sold at Spätis around town (spotted at Admiralbrücke, Boxhagener Platz, Tempelhofer Feld and Akazienstraße)

TEMPELHOF METAMORPHOSIS: A PICTURE BOOK HOMAGE TO BERLIN’S FAVORITE FIELD

TEMPELHOF METAMORPHOSIS: A PICTURE BOOK HOMAGE TO BERLIN’S FAVORITE FIELD

It’s ten years since Tempelhofer Feld opened as a public park, and so an ideal time to reflect on how the 355 hectare site has become one of the city’s most treasured green spaces. Berlin photographer Anna Thiele has been taking her camera to the Field throughout that time, culminating in the 2020 book Tempelhof: metamorphosis. Thiele, who studied under Arno Fischer at the Ostkreuzschule für Fotografie, mixes landscapes and close ups, color with black and white, and the human with the inanimate. The result is a place that appears by turns lively and vibrant yet moody and desolate: we see unicyclists and kite-flying kids in the peak of summer, but also the old terminal enveloped in winter fog and surrounded by rusting signage giving a hint of the Feld’s aviation past. This history is explored in an accompanying essay by historian Christine Bartlitz documenting Tempelhof’s transition from wartime base to commercial airport. Thiele’s visual homage to the Field reminds us just why it should be treasured. (Text: Benji Haughton / Photos: Ramona Razaghmanesh)

COMMUNITY COLA: A SOFT DRINK WITH SOCIAL IMPACT

COMMUNITY COLA: A SOFT DRINK WITH SOCIAL IMPACT

With endless matchas, kombuchas and CBD-teas all vying to quench your thirst this summer, now’s the time to revisit the undisputed king of soft drinks: cola. Giving you classic taste with a social twist is Community Cola, which has created a tasty caramel fizz that also helps worthwhile non-profit initiatives. Founded in 2016 by Hamburger Jan van Schwamen, the start up has since teamed up with Berlin charities Be An Angel, which helps refugees with integration, and Tadel verpflichtet, which campaigns for an open society free of racism. Every time you buy a bottle of mildly-caffeinated goodness – available in classic and light varieties – a small donation is made to these and other projects. Social engagement, one sip at a time (Text: Benji Haughton / Photos: Savannah van der Niet)

Community Cola can be ordered from suppliers Flaschenteufel and Berliner Flaschengeister and can be found in selected bars and cafes across town.
