SINGAPORE MEETS BERLIN — TIM RAUE’S BRAND NEW COOKBOOK

SINGAPORE MEETS BERLIN — TIM RAUE’S BRAND NEW COOKBOOK

Berliner star chef Tim Raue may be a polarising figure both in and outside the kitchen, but one thing’s for sure: the man works wonders with ingredients. For fans, foodies and aspiring chefs out there, Raue’s recently-launched cookbook-cum-biography, “My Way“, sheds light on his some of his secrets. Dedicated to the chef’s personal and culinary journeys, the weighty 287-page tome intersperses vibrant color photography of Berlin and Singapore with 70 recipes featured in Raue’s eponymous Asian-influenced restaurant, 45 of which are dedicated to gourmet-inspired essentials, from broths to sauces and infusions. Just last year, Restaurant Tim Raue was ranked 34th in the “World’s 50 Best Restaurants” list, and the Kreuzberg-born chef is also the first German Michelin-starred chef to be featured in an episode of the Netflix series “Chef’s Table”, which premiered on 17.2.17. Whatever your opinion of him, the homegrown gastronome is proving worthy of keeping an eye on. (Text: Victoria Pease / Photos: Joerg Lehmann / Nils Hasenau c/o Callwey Verlag)

SCHOEMIG PORZELLAN: SIMPLE PLEASURES FOR THE KITCHENTOP

SCHOEMIG PORZELLAN: SIMPLE PLEASURES FOR THE KITCHENTOP

Tone down your next tea party with ceramics from this petite shop and studio in Helmholtzkiez. These plain white teacups – perhaps with the addition of a pencil-thin gray line – will make an essentialist’s heart swoon. Owner Claudia Schoemig perfected her precarious art for many years before opening a store in 2011. In a whitewashed space flooded with winter sun, her porcelain proves endurance. Untouched by formality, the pieces come to life all on their own. Long, thin shelves are lined with handle-less cups in various sizes. Find also translucent plates and bowls with a paper-like quality, and an array of vases dipped in pastels waiting to be filled. Contrary to their fragile nature, these skinny saucers are made for everyday use. At Cee Cee, we treated ourselves to a bespoke collection, to make winter mornings a little easier. THE WEDNESDAY CHEF: RECIPES THAT CELEBRATE THE COLD

THE WEDNESDAY CHEF: RECIPES THAT CELEBRATE THE COLD

What’s the best antidote to the cold? For American-Italian chef Luisa Weiss it’s Kaffeezeit (coffee time) on Sunday afternoons, a jumble of Christmas cookies, and yeasty “celebration” bread. Just in time for the snowy season, Luisa, author of the popular food blog The Wednesday Chef, sent us her new recipe book Classic German Baking to snuggle up to. Growing up between Berlin and Boston, Luisa’s book is a dedication to the recipes that guided her throughout her childhood to become all-time favorites. From raisin buns, to hazelnut-raspberry macaroons, and classic quark cheesecake – It’s time to roll up your sleeves and unpack those baking tins. Nothing shouts cozy like the smell of freshly baked bread. (Text: Victoria Pease / Photos: Aubrie Pick)

KIËN — SMART DAYLIGHT AT YOUR FINGERTIPS

KIËN — SMART DAYLIGHT AT YOUR FINGERTIPS

With sunlight becoming faint and wintertime sadness approaching, many are at a loss when it comes to waking up on time. Currently open for funding on Kickstarter, Berlin-based startup Kiën (the makers behind Sygns neon-light installations) has created an intelligent lamp able to emulate natural daylight. By simulating the spectrum of the rising sun, wake up naturally rather than to a ringing alarm clock in the dark. Smart lights can also be installed to create an intimate atmosphere at an event, or to generate ideal lighting conditions for a photo shoot. All of the lamp’s components are 3D-printed, while brightness and color temperature are dynamically adjustable via an app. No more excuses for running late. Follow Kiën on Kickstarter for more information. (Text: Victoria Centaro)
