TAPE ART, TABLE TENNIS AND TIMEPIECES AT TAUENTZIENSTRASSE: THE NEW SWATCH STORE ON KU’DAMM

TAPE ART, TABLE TENNIS AND TIMEPIECES AT TAUENTZIENSTRASSE: THE NEW SWATCH STORE ON KU’DAMM

If you want to unglue yourself from your smartphone (#screentimedetox) but still want to be on time, a good old wristwatch is always an option. Or actually how about a cutting-edge new wristwatch? Time to make a trip to Ku’damm where Swatch has opened a new shop featuring funky, poppy tape art from Tape That. Poppiness is exactly what the brand has been known and loved for since it was founded in 1983. At the time, combining Swiss precision with vibrant styles was novel, and it’s a concept that still works today. The Flik Flak model for children has become a classic amongst school kids. As for the grown-ups, the often witty and surprising styles make for good conversation starters. If the Frida Kahlo Swatch is a little funky for business meetings, the “Originals” collection offers normcore style par excellence and has long held cult status, while “Skin” models are a minimalist’s dream. Despite this heritage, the brand is very much in the 21st century: some models even offer contactless payments. But in some ways the traditional features are best: a watch that lets you keep an eye on the time for your bus to the lake (and which will accompany you when you jump in the water) and which lets you record meeting minutes accurately. If you want to try out the watches in real life, the shop is the ideal place to do so. It has an interior that is filled with tape art and neon. TikTokable? We think so.

CAR PARK PARTIES, HOLD MUSIC AND ALBUMS ON CASSETTE: BEATBUDE IN NEUKÖLLN — RECOMMENDED BY CAINELLIKLASKA

CAR PARK PARTIES, HOLD MUSIC AND ALBUMS ON CASSETTE: BEATBUDE IN NEUKÖLLN — RECOMMENDED BY CAINELLIKLASKA

“Hello and welcome to hold music vol. 2” says the female voice at the end of the telephone line. What follows is electronic music – more specifically the latest release from Beatbude: “Hold Music Vol. 2. – music on hold available on 12″ and tape”. If you want to hear it, dial 030 577 13 001 (listen to the whole thing and you can leave a message). This fun idea comes from the middle of Neukölln, where Beatbude is located on the first floor of a building on Weserstraße. Based out of their home there, Charlotte Kehl and Juri Bader spend their days putting out new releases, working on their own projects and running the labels Tax Free and AVA. Records. When the pair are not doing that they’re shipping vinyl, CDs, tapes, magazines and mousepads around the world. The boxes are stored in the basement, the singles under the bed, the trolleys to shift it all outside. Delivery drivers who expect loading ramps, forklifts and pallets to assist their large deliveries are in for a shock when they turn their articulated trucks into the duo’s bike-friendly street.

Beatbude is many things: label, distributor, shop, organizer, studio and rehearsal room. The 90 sqm space is home to a sewing machine in the studio and drums in the bedroom. Customers picking up their orders in person are treated to a coffee and the chance to buy products that are officially sold out. Some of the cassette releases are made in such small numbers that you have to pick them up from car boot sales or from the shop directly. It’s worth checking out Beatbude’s Bandcamp, their meticulously-kept archive (est 2007) and their Instagram, where you’ll find announcements for upcoming events, often at short notice.

Cainelliklaska is the moniker of architects Philipp Burst and Paul Schleith. The pair transform existing buildings, design furniture objects and produce artworks.

Beatbude – you can arrange a visit by appointment.

On Saturday, 25.06.22 there will be a car boot sale at Dieselstr.37 in Neukölln from 17h followed by a concert and music on Ziegrastr.11 from 20h. More info here. On 16.09.2022 Garagen Uwe’s debut album “Low Lights” will be released by Beatbude on vinyl and cassette.

BROWSE AND BUY EARTHENWARE FROM BERLIN-BASED THROWERS AND SPINNERS — CERAMICS MARKET AT PEACE OUT PARADISE

BROWSE AND BUY EARTHENWARE FROM BERLIN-BASED THROWERS AND SPINNERS — CERAMICS MARKET AT PEACE OUT PARADISE

Berlin has quietly been turning into a hotspot for pottery. In studios and back rooms all over the city, wheels are spinning, hands are molding and kilns are firing. This Sunday (19.06.2022), the center of all this ceramic creativity will be Peace out Paradise (POP), the Kreuzberg community pottery studio founded in February 2022. For their first ceramics market, POP will be welcoming 19 Berlin-based earthenware artists to exhibit and sell their work in the ground floor studio. If you weren’t aware of how lively the local ceramics scene is, you will be after browsing the pieces on display, like the Technicolor cups from Marilyne Blais, the perfectly-pocked plates from Adele Howsen and the ethno-futuristic sculptures from Studio Cúze. These are just three of the talented makers exhibiting – see here for the full line-up and go see them in person this Sunday. And if you feel inspired to get behind the pottery wheel yourself, you’re in the right place: the studio has classes and memberships perfect for getting creative with clay.

GET READY FOR SUMMER WITH LABELS: JEWELRY BY SABRINA DEHOFF, SWIMWEAR BY ANEKDOT AND ITALIAN SNACKS FROM AMORE

Temperatures are set to soar this weekend and we can’t wait to take a dip in a cool lake, enjoy dinner with friends and dance the night away at a rooftop party. If you need to get geared up for the season, Labels is the app that brings you the hottest Berlin brands by bike right to your door. Whether it’s sustainable swimwear by Anekdot or jewelry by Sabrina Dehoff, the platform helps you find the perfect summer pieces. Looking for a last-minute bikini for the pool? Anekdot’s classic yet contemporary bikinis and swimming costumes come in muted colors and are made from recycled materials which not only look good, but also feel great in the water.

For your evening look, there’s Sabrina Dehoff’s sustainable earrings. The jewelry designer creates new collections every season using innovative materials: Vigo is her first sustainable series and features organic, elegant shapes made of recycled sterling silver in plated gold and rose gold. Finally, if you need something to bring to your weekend meetup, we recommend the Classico picnic basket from Italian deli concept store Amore. Inside you’ll find delicacies such as Lambrusco and Brutti e Buoni pastries for your post-meal espresso. In short: all you need for a memorable summer weekend.
