OEL — ORGANIC, COLD-EXTRACTED OLIVE OIL STRAIGHT FROM GREECE

OEL — ORGANIC, COLD-EXTRACTED OLIVE OIL STRAIGHT FROM GREECE

Olive oil: it’s intrinsic to the Mediterranean way of life and loved by the whole world. But do you know where that bottle sitting on your kitchen shelf actually comes from? Tracing the true origin of olive oil can be tricky – unless of course you get it directly from the source, which is just what Oel does. The Berlin-based brand produces its organic extra virgin olive oil from its very own land in Greece. After starting with small olive plants in Berlin, founders Marc, Simone and Amadeus took the leap and bought an olive grove in Greece in 2015. Plots followed in Kalamata, Meligalas and Messenia – Greek regions that have been linked to olive oil for thousands of years. The Koroneiki olives used for Oel are picked by hand and processed using cold extraction, the gentlest way to make oil. As for the taste: well it’s as good as you’d expect. The Starter Kit is a nice way to sample the team’s produce, and includes 250ml of oil, an olive mix and some olive soap. If the oil is to your liking, you can buy it in sizes of up to 5l (handy if you always find yourself running out). Oh, and if you’re wondering who the lady in the logo is, it’s Anthoula Tzamouranis, the grandmother of founder Amadeus who inspired the entire venture with her olive-growing expertise.

TUT GUT — BOXHAGENER PLATZ OASIS FOR FRESHLY SQUEEZED JUICES AND SUPERFOODS

TUT GUT — BOXHAGENER PLATZ OASIS FOR FRESHLY SQUEEZED JUICES AND SUPERFOODS

New year, new you? For some, perhaps. But if your resolutions seem dead on arrival and the gym an alien environment, there’s always Tut Gut to get you on the path to health. At this juice bar on Boxhagener Platz, they squeeze fresh fruit every day using cold-press techniques, with no pasteurization needed. This preserves more of the fruit’s vitamins and minerals and also makes for a juice that’s fresh, zesty and rich. Founders Noa Sade and Diana Müller opened the shop as a zen-like place for Berliners to revitalize body and mind. And mind is particularly important – hence why the drinks have names like The Radiant, which is full of greens and tastes pretty great too. Meanwhile, the “After Party” juice is – as the name suggests – ideal for that post-NYE dip. In addition to juices, smoothie bowls and superfoods, Tut Gut also offers a variety of nut milks including the warming “By the Fire” almond blend with cinnamon and the bestselling lavender-infused Joie de Vivre. Even the design of the space itself is good for the soul: its interior resembles a kind of Mediterranean spa. So sit back, sip a juice or “milq” and get ready to tackle 2022!

FOR A FLAVOR-FILLED DRY JANUARY — ALCOHOL-FREE SPIRITS FROM THE TASTE BAR

It’s the start of the year and for many of us that means time to atone for the excesses of the holiday season. But if Dry January feels like too big a sacrifice, the good news is it’s never been easier to go “nolo” (no or low-alcohol) thanks to the truly tasty alternatives now available. You can find some of the best on The Taste Bar, the online store dedicated to zero-percent drinks. Launched in 2021, the Berlin-based startup is all about turning your Dry January (or dry year?) from a burden into a joy. The site has a selection of premium alcohol-free spirits and elixirs that can be mixed into cocktails or enjoyed on their own. Looking for an alternative to classic bitters? Then the orange and rosemary aperitif from Wilfred’s – exclusive to The Taste Bar – is a solid pick. Can’t go without the juniper taste of gin? Check out the Laori gin alternative which is distilled in Berlin and packed with eight botanicals. Meanwhile, for a winter mood boost, the herby spirits from Three Spirit come in stimulating Social Elixir and relaxing Nightcap versions. If you do decide to go totally dry, the team have written a blog post on the myriad health benefits of reducing your alcohol consumption. We’ll leave the decision to you, but one thing’s for sure: you’ll come for the detox and stay for the taste…

LOTI PANTÓN — PERFECTLY-FORMED MACARONS IN A MYRIAD OF FLAVORS AND COLORS

LOTI PANTÓN — PERFECTLY-FORMED MACARONS IN A MYRIAD OF FLAVORS AND COLORS

If Mitte has a macaron expert, it’s Loti Pantón. This Israeli-born baker – who runs a dessert shop of the same name on Linienstraße – makes some of the most beautiful and mouth-watering mini cakes we’ve seen. If you need a recap: macarons are a sweet treat made from two meringue-based biscuits that surround a flavored ganache, cream or jam filling. Loti began offering them at his first store in Zehlendorf before relocating to this latest shop which offers close-up views of the baking team at work. First popularized in France during the renaissance, macarons now come in every imaginable flavor. Our team had lots of fun trying Loti’s different flavors and were particularly impressed by the “St.Moritz” savory macaron which combines raclette flambée (cheese melted with a blowtorch), salty pecans and bourbon whiskey. The Christmas collection, meanwhile, includes sweeter varieties such as Lebkuchen and Marzipan.

If you are vegan or coeliac, don’t stop reading: the biscuits, which are traditionally made using egg white, are offered in an equally divine plant-based form, a feat which required six months of experimentation. Our vegan pick: the “Birgi”, blends mocha and figs with a decadent hazelnut praline filling. All the creations are completely gluten-free due to the almond flour base. The only drawback with Loti’s macarons is that they look too good to eat – almost!
