WILLA BERLIN — DESIGNER-RUN SHOP FOR HANDMADE HOME PIECES, JEWELRY, FASHION AND MORE

WILLA BERLIN — DESIGNER-RUN SHOP FOR HANDMADE HOME PIECES, JEWELRY, FASHION AND MORE

You’ll find all sorts of things at Willa Berlin, from jewelry and clothing to kitchen utensils and tableware. But there’s one thing that unites the selection in this Kreuzberg shop: a firm focus on good design and craftsmanship. Located just opposite Markthalle Neun, the store was opened by designers Stefanie Hartwig and Sarah Harfmann in November 2021. The intention was simple: the duo wanted to bring together items from their favorite local makers and designers – as well as their own pieces – in one place. Hartwig is the founder of Plietsh, a label for jewelry that since 2009 has been combining silver forms with natural objects found on the streets of Berlin. Harfmann founded her eponymous brand in 2010, creating a range of timeless wool and linen garments which now includes “Harfmann Piccolino”, a super cute kidswear range which includes matching grown-up and children’s garments.

Besides the pair’s own designs, the expertly curated Willa selection includes gorgeous stripey pastel ceramics created by wheel-thrown clay in Berlin by Chris’s Ceramics, unique multi-media mini wall hangings by Studio Hammel and gorgeous beeswax candles in groovy wooden holders by Ovo Things Candles in Lithuania. And: if you’re looking for some little stocking fillers for Christmas, you can also find tasty Lebkuchen from Pfeffer & Frost packed in ultra cute boxes. There’s no excuse not to pay a visit…

A LIMITED EDITION OF “TAKE ME TO THE LAKES” — EXPLORE 30 LAKES ACROSS GERMANY WITH INSIDER TIPS AND BEAUTIFUL PHOTOGRAPHY

A LIMITED EDITION OF “TAKE ME TO THE LAKES” — EXPLORE 30 LAKES ACROSS GERMANY WITH INSIDER TIPS AND BEAUTIFUL PHOTOGRAPHY

Summer lake days seem like light years away, so here’s a book to get you dreaming about (and planning) next year’s shoreside adventures. Berlin publishers The Gentle Temper are celebrating five years of books with a special edition of their now-legendary lake guide, “Take Me to the Lakes”. The 312-page “Deutschland Edition” includes a beautifully-photographed selection of 30 of the best German lakes collected from different editions in the series. Each section in the book is dedicated to a region or city: Bavaria, Cologne, the Black Forest, Hamburg, Leipzig and of course Berlin. Besides the lakes, for each region the book also includes 12 accommodation tips – from hotels to tiny houses – which is handy if you plan to stay a night or two. Like all the books in the series, this edition is full of hidden places and practical advice that will take you from the mountain lakes of Bavaria to the sand dunes surrounding Berlin. In our opinion it’s worth grabbing a copy just to admire the design and photography – that said, it’d be a shame if it never left the coffee table. As for us: we’re already planning our 2022 lake debut.

FUN AND FUNKY HOMEWARE DESIGNS AND VINTAGE OBJECTS — PODIUM X FRIENDS CHRISTMAS MARKET AT H&M MITTE GARTEN

FUN AND FUNKY HOMEWARE DESIGNS AND VINTAGE OBJECTS — PODIUM X FRIENDS CHRISTMAS MARKET AT H&M MITTE GARTEN

It’s the Christmas shopping classic: you go out to buy gifts for your loved ones and end up with a bag of goodies for yourself. But don’t feel bad – just get yourself down to the Podium X Friends Christmas Market this weekend (18 & 19.12.2021) where we’re pretty certain you’ll find the perfect pressies for your besties. The event is hosted by vintage collectors Luisa and Sonja at Podium who, besides showing off their own retro homewares, are inviting a bunch of their designer friends to bring their creations. The location for the market is the outdoor area at H&M Mitte Garten, a shop and event space that occupies the ground floor of a beautiful Altbau just off Hackescher Markt. The designs on show are fresh and unconventional – not least the plates, vases and cups from Studio Roi, whose mission is to celebrate the female anatomy.

Other highlights for the home include the wavy mirrors and candleholders from Lisa Land or, if you want to give the gift of a new hobby, the candle making and needlepoint kits from The Good Kit. Foodies meanwhile should check out the otherworldly cakes from Eliza Mozer and the Aussie wines from Pét Shop. But it’s not just about the shopping: you’ll also want to soak up the festive vibes with mulled wine, vegan hot dogs and a music line-up that includes daily DJ sets by Catelle and an acoustic gig on Saturday night from Jonny Mahoro. And once you’ve got your gifts sorted, you can head inside Mitte Garden: a high-concept H&M flagship where you can browse curated womenswear, third-party brands and vintage pieces. So treat yourself – we won’t tell anyone…

HAFERKORN & SAUERBREY — CUTE CHRISTMAS CARDS, ELEGANT WRAPPING AND DESIGN-FORWARD STATIONERY

HAFERKORN & SAUERBREY — CUTE CHRISTMAS CARDS, ELEGANT WRAPPING AND DESIGN-FORWARD STATIONERY

Need some finishing touches to match your carefully-chosen Christmas gifts? Berlin-based brand Haferkorn & Sauerbrey offer a tasteful solution with their seasonal cardspapersribbons and gift tags. Designed in-house, the online collection was founded in 2008 by designers Romy Haferkorn and Miriam Sauerbrey, who found they couldn’t connect with the stationery styles on the market. Having previously designed for brands and magazines, the pair joined forces to create their own stationery and greeting card designs. As well as papers, the ever-growing collection includes some great gifts: vibrant notebooks, Bauhaus-inspired prints and even silk blend scarves. And if you know a friend who needs help organizing – or if that person is you – the brand’s beautiful calendars and planners will help make 2022 run smoothly. You can browse the full range online.

ROTHOLZ STUDIO SALE — SHOP SUSTAINABLE FASHION WITH DISCOUNTS, SAMPLES AND ONE-OFFS

ROTHOLZ STUDIO SALE — SHOP SUSTAINABLE FASHION WITH DISCOUNTS, SAMPLES AND ONE-OFFS

If you need help finding fashion-forward Christmas gifts, why not just swap cities for the day? Potsdam may be Berlin’s little sibling, but it’s home to a clothing brand you’d be wrong to overlook: Rotholz. Located in an elegant glass-fronted store in the west of the city, the label is known for its sustainable casualwear: clean-cut knits, sweats, jackets and caps that are made from climate-friendly materials. You can check out the whole range – and get some pretty great discounts – by heading to the brand’s Studio Sale this Saturday, 18.12.2021. For one day only, the team are offering up to 30 percent off the current collection, which includes elegant overshirts and over jackets and a range of minimalist pullovers for both men and women. The label was launched in 2008 – long before sustainability was on-trend – to create responsibly-sourced fashion without sacrificing on style.

As for the specifics: the knitwear pieces are manufactured in Germany from organic merino wool – indeed all the items are made in the EU (there’s specific sourcing info for all the pieces on the website). Besides the latest cuts, Saturday’s event will be a last chance to shop pieces from previous collections as well as samples and other one-offs at reduced prices. And since it’s Christmas, there will be mulled wine and music to bring the festive vibes – so take your time and make a day of it.
