CULT EYEWEAR LABEL OLIVER PEOPLES OPENS ON KU’DAMM

CULT EYEWEAR LABEL OLIVER PEOPLES OPENS ON KU’DAMM

Bauhaus permeates countless elements of this city’s style, and now you can also incorporate it into your own. In early October 2018, Californian luxury eyewear brand Oliver Peoples opened its first boutique in Germany on Ku’Damm. In keeping with the brand’s shop designs throughout the world, the interior takes heed from Californian Mid-Century Modernism, combining it with the movement’s Bauhaus origins — the classic “Bauhaus blue” sets the mood, complemented by rich walnut wood and chrome elements and finished with lamps from the ’20s and ’30s. All this provides a chic backdrop for the range of handcrafted frames for women and men, available as sunglasses or prescription glasses in the iconic styles, the Resort 2019 collection and a duo of frames created together with fashion brand The Row. A pair of limited-edition “Berlin” frames with blue-tinted lenses are exclusively available in this store — get into the mood with a campaign shot by Denise Bodden featuring Stella von Senger in iconic Modernist locations around town, like Mies van der Rohe’s Landhaus Lemke and Corbusierhaus Berlin. SEE BERLIN THROUGH THE LENS OF EYEEM FOUNDER GEN SADAKANE

Calling all hobby photographers (and who isn’t, these days?): What does it take to create a photo that turns heads, stops people in their tracks — or at least triggers an overflow of heart icons? Since 2011, the hugely successful Berlin-based photo platform EyeEm has been exploring and answering this question — generously sharing their expertise on the way. Next Tuesday (6.11.) EyeEm creative director and co-founder, the affable Gen Sadakane, is leading a photo walk through Berlin-Mitte — seeking out interesting motifs and passing on tips for seeing, and capturing, the city in a new light along the way. It’s free and open to all — thanks to Google Pixel Studio, a pop-up space for creativity and connectivity centred on taking incredible photos with the Pixel 3. Hint: with a few tricks from the experts, it’s easier than you think — register hereto join the walk and get the inside scoop on upping your snapshot game. VIA FILM AND FOOD, CLAM CLUB SHINES THE SPOTLIGHT ON WOMEN

VIA FILM AND FOOD, CLAM CLUB SHINES THE SPOTLIGHT ON WOMEN

One film, multiple courses and myriad new connections brought together from a feminist perspective: Founded by Kathrin Kuna in November 2017, Clam Club has been turning the spotlight on women who are working wonders in the film and food industries in Berlin and beyond. All genders are invited to experience an evening of inspiration, exchange and delicious food: the 6th round of which takes place next Saturday (10.11) at Pahr. In focus (and in conversation) this round are the multi-talented Leila El-Kayem, whose second short film, “Don’t Trust the Border”, will be screened — along with a dance performance by Jessica Nupen, whose choreography the film reinterprets. Taking care of the food will be Joyce Hermlin, a Kenyan-born chef takes inspiration from her grandmother’s farm in her cooking. If previous editions are anything to go by, this is one evening you won’t want to miss. Round up your friends and secure your tickets here. (Text: Anna Dorothea Ker / Photos: Luke Marshall Johnson)

21GRAMM — NOURISHING ALL-DAY DINING IN SOULFUL SURROUNDINGS

21GRAMM — NOURISHING ALL-DAY DINING IN SOULFUL SURROUNDINGS

A cemetery perhaps isn’t where you’d expect to find a bustling, cozy eatery. Yet from morning coffee to a nightcap, 21gramm is here to satiate your thirst and hunger throughout the day — pulling off each menu at a consistency that’s rarely seen at its all-day-dining counterparts. We visited one evening in early autumn, and were torn between taking a seat in the charming brick courtyard — complete with string lights and blankets — or in the vaulted interior, which owners and friends Jeremias, Daniel and Tilmann painstakingly renovated, choosing to leave a few gothic-lettered passages of scripture on the walls in honor of the building’s original purpose as a chapel. Whenever you visit, it’s all about the platter here — think creative twists on the classic cheese and meat boards for brunch. From 18-22h, a simple evening menu turns an after-work glass of wine into dinner: Our salad with flambéed goat’s cheese and caramelized walnuts was full of flavor and paired perfectly with a glass of Jülg 2017 Grauburgunder. Oh, and the name? Yes, it references the alleged weight of the soul. (Text: Anna Dorothea Ker / Photos: Pamina Aichhorn)

Curious about the secrets to success of women doing it for themselves? This Saturday (27.10.) Sara Nuru, entrepreneur, charity ambassador and model will be at Google Pixel Studio, a pop-up space for creativity and connectivity, to share the goals, challenges and accomplishments of the work she does with “Menschen für Menschen“, a charity working together with the local population in rural Ethiopia on projects ranging from farming and the supply of clean drinking water to education and health. Together with her sister, Sali, Sara also runs the fair trade specialty coffee label NuruCoffee, which works together with women coffee growers in Ethiopia.
