TIME OUT IN ITALY — YOGA AND ARTIST RETREATS AT VILLA PRAVERNARA

TIME OUT IN ITALY — YOGA AND ARTIST RETREATS AT VILLA PRAVERNARA

Slow, conscious, connected living. While it may sound simple, I often find it challenging to let go and make room for downtime. If you resonate with this struggle, a week at Villa Pravernara could be just what you need. Discovered by Sheila, along with her parents Be and Andreas, and her partner Yona, in northern Italy during the summer of 2022, the villa offered a sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of city life in Berlin. Sheila recognized its potential to provide an escape, not only for herself but for others as well. Dating back to the 1600s, Villa Pravernara sits halfway up a hill, overlooking the valley south of the small town of Valenza, an hour from Milan and Turin. Despite being unfamiliar territory for the family, they managed to restore the villa while preserving its timeless charm.

Starting August 2024, week-long yoga and meditation retreats will be available at Villa Pravernara, catering to various levels, languages, and budgets. Skilled instructors will be invited to lead sessions in Ashtanga, Jivamukti, Vinyasa, Yin Yoga, and Somatic Movement — allowing guests to choose the practice that resonates most with them. Additionally, the villa provides ample space and freedom for artist retreats — welcoming artists, music producers, authors, and anyone seeking a haven to focus on their creative processes within the 1400-square-meter grounds. With two large terraces, multiple living rooms, and a professional kitchen, guests have plenty of room for relaxation and downtime. Yona Whale ensures that guests are well-fed with full catering services, offering vegetarian and vegan dishes prepared with fresh, regional and seasonal ingredients. Start your day with yoga in the former orangery, explore the serene surroundings during the afternoon, and wind down with warm summer evenings on the terrace. Villa Pravernara serves as a gentle reminder of the beauty of taking time for oneself.

THE BARN OPENS A NEW SPECIALTY COFFEE SPOT AT CHECKPOINT CHARLIE

THE BARN OPENS A NEW SPECIALTY COFFEE SPOT AT CHECKPOINT CHARLIE

This coffee brand hardly needs an introduction, but for those of you who are new to Berlin, introducing: The Barn. Founded in 2010 by Ralf Rueller, the coffee company has been one of the most successful on the Berlin scene from the very beginning and has played a key role in ensuring specialty coffee has been on everyone’s lips for many years (in the truest sense of the word). The Barn has certainly helped shape my taste for coffee. Their focus is on the typical light roast from Probat’s custom-made drum roaster and enjoying coffee in single-origin form. With what is now their eleventh café in Berlin, the team has revived a meeting point in a vibrant neighborhood, next to the gourmet restaurant Nobelhart & Schmutzig. Located at the southern end of Friedrichstrasse, The Barn adds energy to the corner. Recently, there have been many new developments in the triangle between Checkpoint Charlie, Mehringplatz, and the Jewish Museum — from Michelin-starred restaurants to brunch spots — so it’s all the better that The Barn is now also doing its bit to make this area more attractive.

At Checkpoint Charlie, the well-known coffee specialties are prepared on 160 square meters — as always at The Barn to the point. This means that coffee is put into the cup exactly according to the recipe. The result tastes exactly like The Barn! There are also sweet classics such as chocolate almond cake and savory snacks such as toasted panini for those after a quick lunch. But of course, that’s just the practical and tasty part for us. The best thing about The Barn is that with every espresso, flat white or hand-brewed coffee, you make the coffee supply chain a little more sustainable and fair. After all, prices paid on the world market for raw materials and good growing conditions are unfortunately still not standard. The Barn has set itself the goal of remunerating farmers highly for high quality, and that means not only covering their costs but also enabling investment in the farm and the community. They also help to increase knowledge of cultivation methods and ensure the promotion of specific measures — such as wastewater filtration at Ivan dos Santos in the Brazil growing region. Here’s to a cappuccino.

And if you want to celebrate the new location together, then come along on 15.02.2024 from 17–21h. There’ll be cocktails from the Freimeister Kollektiv, DJs, and of course, coffee waiting for you!

THE MODERN KITCHEN OF YUVAL BELHAN: CROQUETTES, PET NAT & OTHER DELICACIES AT TELLER BERLIN

THE MODERN KITCHEN OF YUVAL BELHAN: CROQUETTES, PET NAT & OTHER DELICACIES AT TELLER BERLIN

One of my most beloved dining memories is a summer evening spent in a Neukölln backyard in 2022 — larger-than-life sharing plates stream endlessly from the kitchen, hands reach over the long table passing vibrant and ever-so-comforting dishes back and forth. Since that evening at Kiddush, I’ve been hoping something more permanent would spring up so I could taste chef Yuval Belhan’s food once again. My prayers were answered last month; a gloomy January in Berlin was lightened by the fact Yuval had opened his very first restaurant, Teller, in the former space of Mrs. Robinson’s. The name might seem obvious for a restaurant however, it came after both Yuval and his husband, Klaus, attended photographer Juergen Teller’s wedding, and each guest was given a plate with a photograph on it. Klaus remarked it would be a great name for a restaurant, and years later, the vision finally came to life. The plum-painted brick walls warm the dining, giving the space an elevated yet homely feel that matches the seasonal menu. Teller can be described as a love letter that combines the best of Mediterranean and Central European influences. Think crispy rarebit croquettes, homemade fermented potato bread, and fun creations such as “the chicken brioche sando”. The wine list compliments the menu perfectly with funky Pet Nat’s that will knock your socks off to classic Mencia’s which are a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. For the time being, Teller is just open Thursday through Sunday, so you should definitely book ahead of time.

BE BRAVE: THE JOURNEY OF COURAGE SUMMIT CONNECTS BIWOC* & TIN*BIPOC ENTREPRENEURS

BE BRAVE: THE JOURNEY OF COURAGE SUMMIT CONNECTS BIWOC* & TIN*BIPOC ENTREPRENEURS

“Inclusion” and “diversity” are buzzwords thrown around by companies (and beyond) constantly. It’s not uncommon for companies to claim diversity and inclusion without explaining what that actually looks like in practice. But what do these two terms mean from the perspective of BIWOC* and TIN*BIPOC, and what do workplaces require to be genuinely inclusive and diverse? The Journey of Courage Summit next Saturday (10.02.2024) at Ayoka in Kreuzberg will explore precisely these questions. (Quick explanation: BIWOC* stands for Black, Indigenous, and Women of Color; TIN*BIPOC stands for Trans*, Inter*, and Non-Binary People of Color.) The summit — initiated by Brave Spaces 2.0 — is an intersectional event hosted by and for people affected by discrimination. Leni Charles (Kids of the Diaspora), Beatrice Angut Lorika Oola (Fashion Africa Now), and Ouassima Laabich (Muslim Futures) are among those taking part in the event. The moderator at AYOKA — a Black Owned Business — will be ShaNon Bobinger. Gambian cuisine will be provided by Am Agie Njie, who is soon to launch her own catering business, Eat. Africa. The idea for this event originated at BIWOC* Rising. Former pilot and founder Loubna Messaoudi knows from her own experience how difficult it is for children of the migrant diaspora in Germany to navigate educational institutions and workplaces despite systematic and structural discrimination.

With her company, Loubna wanted to create a place and space where the economic, social, and career participation of TIN*BIPOC and BIWOC* is strengthened. Among other things, the BIWOC* Rising team offers anti-bias training for companies that want to build more inclusive structures. The Brave Spaces 2.0 project hosts events and workshops for TIN*BIPOC and BIWOC* entrepreneurs, solopreneurs, and freelancers and provides them with a database of helpful resources and a growing network of founders of color. You’ll hear many, many terms, not just buzzwords, but important language that makes discrimination visible and opposable at this unmissable event.

NO ONE SMELLS LIKE YOU: 15WEST IN CHARLOTTENBURG — RECOMMENDED BY CARSTEN FISCHER

NO ONE SMELLS LIKE YOU: 15WEST IN CHARLOTTENBURG — RECOMMENDED BY CARSTEN FISCHER

When you step into 15West on Giesebrechtstraße in Charlottenburg, you feel as though you’ve been transported to Paris or Milan. The reclaimed oak parquet flooring, earthy tones, floral armchairs, and three display cubes in the center — adorned with pastel tiles fired in a Bavarian workshop — create an ambiance unlike any other. Founder Marc Janssen has curated a space for exclusive niche fragrances at 15West, nestled in Berlin’s west, not far from Kurfürstendamm. Many of the meticulously selected fragrances cannot be found elsewhere in Berlin, and in some cases, in the whole of Germany. Hailing from the Netherlands, Marc Janssen’s deep-rooted passion for perfumes led him to explore perfumeries on his travels. The concept of his own “fragrance boutique” took shape 20 years ago, and in spring 2020, it materialized into reality — a haven for bespoke fragrance consultation from an unparalleled perfume connoisseur. 15West transcends your usual perfumeries; it’s about the immersive experience and the narratives behind each fragrance. Venturing off the beaten path, you’ll discover unique brands like Thomas de Monaco or Eternal Journey, whose perfumes are designed to be worn individually or layered. With Valentine’s Day approaching, 15West presents a distinctive opportunity to celebrate love and individuality. Here, you’re bound to find the perfect fragrance to quicken your heartbeat.
