TEN YEARS OF BITE CLUB — STREET FOOD EVENT CELEBRATES AT ARENA BERLIN

TEN YEARS OF BITE CLUB — STREET FOOD EVENT CELEBRATES AT ARENA BERLIN

Clear tomorrow evening’s calendar and start saving up your appetite, because Bite Club is celebrating ten years of poutine, pulled pork and pancakes with an XXL street food party at Arena Berlin (11.08.2023 from 17h). Since landing on the scene in 2013, the food series has been the torchbearer for the food truck trend in Berlin. One decade on (can you believe it?! we can’t) the team – led by London-Born design historian and foodie Miranda Zahedieh – are back at their home venue with a mix of old favorites and new kids. The list of trucks, stands and stalls reads like a who’s who of trendy Berlin food vendors: Butter Bronsons are in attendance with their buttermilk chicken burgers, as are Munchies with their indulgent birria tacos and burgers (little reminder: when they aren’t at Bite Club, Munchies also make lunchies – in front of the Cee Cee Cafe). If you’ve never sampled street food from Karachi, the Dhuwan stand ought to be on your list with its Pakistani-inspired paneer tikka subs. Also worth a stop is Jarú, which serves very simple and very good Peruvian ceviche. And since you planned your visit properly (you did, didn’t you?) you’ll still have space for dessert. This comes courtesy of  Jones Ice Cream (scoops and cones) and Brammibals (strawberries and cream doughnuts). With your appetite taken care of, grab a spritz and a seat and enjoy the Spreeside sunset. Oh, and since this is the final Bite Club of the season, you might want to grab one final treat before you leave. An Octopus ball from Takoyaki? Let the party continue…

THE BIG SCREEN UNDER THE STARS — WHAT TO SEE AT THE OPEN AIR CINEMAS IN AUGUST

THE BIG SCREEN UNDER THE STARS — WHAT TO SEE AT THE OPEN AIR CINEMAS IN AUGUST

As we reach what is officially called late summer, there’s no better time to watch movies under the stars. We’ve dug through the open air cinema schedules and found six must-sees, starting tomorrow evening (11.08 21h) at Freiluftkino Hasenheide which will be showing Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City. In this laconic comedy, star-struck visitors go to a junior Stargazer convention and are suddenly cut off from the outside world due to an extraordinary event in the American desert town. On Sunday (13.08 21h), take a trip back to your school days with Das Lehrerzimmer at Pompeji in Friedrichshain. The film is set to win several German film awards for its outstanding portrayal of the German school system and the powerful performances of the cast. Next Thursday (17.08. 20h45) the Mobile Kino in Charlottenburg will take you to a completely different world with The Banshees of Inisherin, a film about the abrupt end of a lifelong friendship between two Irish men.

The film Everything Everywhere All At Once at the Kino am Kaisersteg (24.08. 20h45) is not only captivating because of its profound characters, but also because of its multidimensional world structures and its genre-crossing storytelling. You should definitely see this Oscar-winning masterpiece on the big screen. Next up: if you haven’t seen it, what are you waiting for? The Barbie movie will be playing at the Freiluftkino Friedrichshain on 24.08.(20h15) – complete with bright pink outfits and entertaining punchlines. Or how about Oppenheimer, this summer’s other hit? The story about the construction of the atomic bomb and its inventor J. Robert Oppenheimer will be screened at the Freiluftkino Rehberge(30.08, 20h15). Time to pack your blanket, grab a deckchair and get ready for a night of entertainment in the great outdoors.

ITA — LATIN AMERICAN FUSION WITH BISTRO FLAIR

ITA — LATIN AMERICAN FUSION WITH BISTRO FLAIR

Once in a while, you eat a dish that you can’t get out of your head. For a few weeks now, we’ve been entranced by one of the starters at Ita: the tlayuda. This pizza-like dish from the Mexican state of Oaxaca is a large, crispy corn tortilla topped with coriander cream, peas and summer vegetables. It’s a perfect snack to share on an August evening, and you’ll find yourself ordering a second one because it’s just so good. That said, at this cool, charming restaurant run by Micaela and Javier (of Remi and Bar Normal fame) every dish is good. The pair opened the Helmholtzplatz bistro in June 2023 and it became an instant classic. The décor is tasteful, the atmosphere warm and the dishes among the best in Berlin. The menu is Latin American-inspired, but blended with influences from other countries. There’s chicken in black mole and aguachile but also wonderful, freshly baked bread with miso butter. Dishes are cooked in a stone oven and employ regional, seasonal ingredients.

Then there’s the natural wine, a topic on which Micaela is happy to advise. The drinks menu includes favorites from her private collection as well as bottles from wine importers like Material. The name Ita is short for “itacate”, the Spanish word for food or provisions. It makes sense, since these are dishes you’ll want to eat today and tomorrow. This idea of being provided for reflects not just the food, but the atmosphere of the restaurant. You feel like you are in good hands, looked after by staff who seem at home. In a way, Ita is a bit like being in a living room. One which you share with your best friends and where there’s only one task: enjoying yourself.

CYANOTYPE WORKSHOP — CREATE YOUR OWN BLUE-HUED PRINTS WITH KARINA ROVIRA

CYANOTYPE WORKSHOP — CREATE YOUR OWN BLUE-HUED PRINTS WITH KARINA ROVIRA

At the end of June 2023, the Cee Cee team headed to Libken in Gerswalde. In a place where there is plenty of room for work and thought, we used the opportunity to gather without our screens, coming together for foraging hikes, communal cooking and chats around the campfire. There were many highlights, but one thing stood out: our cyanotype workshop with Karina. Cyanotype, one of the first photographic printing techniques, creates unique blue-colored prints. We searched diligently for the most beautiful grasses, flowers and fruits to create our cyanotypes, which we did on white shirts. There are technical reasons for why it works but we couldn’t help feeling there’s a bit of magic involved. If you want to find out, you can attend Karina’s next cyanotype workshop which takes place over two days in September 2023. You’ll learn when and how the first cyanotypes were created, how different artists adopted the process, and what can emerge from it. You’ll also get to know the materials and the coating of the paper.

Then, on the second day, you’ll make your own prints: Karina will provide everything you need but you can also bring your own materials. The beauty of this technique is that you can easily develop new compositions from home once you’ve got the hang of it. There’s no real magic, of course – but you’ll need some sunlight (or, on these particularly gray Berlin days, a little help from UV light).

BUFFALO MILK ICE CREAM FROM PAOLELLA — RECOMMENDED BY KYURIE SHIN

BUFFALO MILK ICE CREAM FROM PAOLELLA — RECOMMENDED BY KYURIE SHIN

Berlin’s ice cream game just got a step up thanks to the folks at Paolella Mozzarella, who make fresh buffalo milk ice cream from grass-fed buffalo living on a 200 hectare farm in Brandenburg. The result is the creamiest, richest and freshest ice cream you’ve ever tasted. This small shop, located opposite U-Bahn station Dahlem Dorf, offers 12 rotating flavors including “pure”, basil and whiskey walnut. Buffalo milk’s higher fat content creates an irresistible texture and flavor that lingers in the mouth, with no artificial sweetness. While ice cream is one of their newer creations, Paolella has long been a key player in Berlin’s gastronomy scene with their handmade buffalo mozzarella and meat. You can find the products at selected retailers. The ice cream is sold seasonally at the Paolella shop, which is located inside the Luise Biergarten – ideal for stopping by before your lake trip.
