WAVY WINTER KNITWEAR AND WORKS FROM BERLIN ARTISTS — PLĀS COLLECTIVE POP-UP ON KOTTBUSSER DAMM

WAVY WINTER KNITWEAR AND WORKS FROM BERLIN ARTISTS — PLĀS COLLECTIVE POP-UP ON KOTTBUSSER DAMM

The clothes from Plās Collective are, in the label’s own words, “drawn by chaos”. The “chaos” here lies in how they’re constructed: the cotton garments are made by making random movements with knitting needles, giving a wavy motif that makes each piece unique. The resulting knitwear collection – made in Italy from organic cotton, no less – is called Unseen Realities and includes winter warmers like the “Glitch” fingerless gloves and the slender “Oddity” scarf. Plas is not your average fashion brand: it’s a sort of hybrid between a garment label and art project, based not in one place but always moving around Europe (“nomadic” is the motto here). Mainly focused on clothes, the collective has also dabbled in design objects like sculptures and stoneware. Now it’s Berlin’s turn to welcome the nomads with a ten-day pop-up in the Somos Art House on Kottbusser Damm.

Besides the off-kilter knits, you can browse and buy design and art from Berlin-based creators: cute garments from hand embroiderer Stefanija Pejchinovska, paintings from Italian-born illustrator Elenia Beretta and prints from artist and photographer Sara Scanderebech. Just the thing if you want your bedroom wall to be as stylish as your wardrobe…

15 YEARS OF PICKLES AND POP ART — COLLECTED PRINTS FROM THE SLAVS AND TATARS ART GROUP

15 YEARS OF PICKLES AND POP ART — COLLECTED PRINTS FROM THE SLAVS AND TATARS ART GROUP

2022 has been (another) year of art collectives. As it comes to a close, Berlin-based Slavs and Tatars are adding to the chorus with a book: Лук Бук (Look Book). For the first time, the highly productive group of artists are publishing a collection of their prints – the result of 15 years of art that has been displayed in galleries including New York’s MoMA and Secession in Vienna. Published by Distanz, “Лук Бук” is in fact a catalog to accompany an exhibition of the same name at the Frans Masereel Centrum in Kasterlee in Belgium. Tonight (03.11.2022) at 18h30 the book’s launch is taking place at the publisher’s offices on Hallesches Ufer. Publisher and author Pablo Larios will talk to the Slavs and Tatars themselves and you can also buy a selection of Merczbau merchandise. Proceeds will be donated to the University of Lviv in Ukraine.

FROM BIO-INSPIRED DESIGNS TO THE FUTURE OF ROBOTS — TALKS, WORKSHOPS AND FILM SCREENINGS AT BERLIN SCIENCE WEEK

FROM BIO-INSPIRED DESIGNS TO THE FUTURE OF ROBOTS — TALKS, WORKSHOPS AND FILM SCREENINGS AT BERLIN SCIENCE WEEK

From pandemic preparedness to the future of mobility – it’s all going on at this year’s Berlin Science Week (runs until 10.11.2022). Once again, the annual gathering of innovators and whizzes is open to anyone interested in science. From astronomers to zoologists, top thinkers will descend on the city for public talks, workshops, exhibits and screenings under the motto “Dare to Know”. Fresh knowledge is certainly not in short supply at the festival’s epicenter, the Natural History Museum, where besides 13-meter-tall dinosaur skeletons, you can join in a free weekend program of over 40 events and exhibitions (05 & 06.11). How about a workshop on bio-inspired design, where you can get hands-on by making things out of materials inspired by nature? Or a public discussion on the future of robotics and machine learning hosted by ETH Zürich university?

Other highlights include a screening of the film Jatun Yaku – Amazon of Rights, a documentary that follows a tributary of the Amazon in Ecuador to explore the extent to which rivers – and nature – have rights. You can give your own opinions at the subsequent Q&A with the film’s co-director, Dr. Maria Cecilia Oliveira, a researcher at the Institute For Advanced Sustainability Studies in Potsdam. Like all the events in the weekend program, you can attend with a free ticket. Check out the full two-day line-up online.

DINNER, DRINKS AND COMPELLING CONVERSATION — TABLE TALKS AT THE DRIVE SALON

DINNER, DRINKS AND COMPELLING CONVERSATION — TABLE TALKS AT THE DRIVE SALON

The dinner table: it’s where delicious meals are eaten and – given the right people – stimulating conversations are had. If good food and good chat are high on your agenda, you’ll want to check out the Table Talk series at the Drive Volkswagen Group Forum on Friedrichstraße. At these dinner events, you are guaranteed interesting guests – or, to be more accurate, guest – since each evening will welcome a famous face from the arts, culture or public life. Next week, for instance, actor and author Devid Striesow will be hosting a sold out night of conversation and cuisine. Over a three-course dinner and drinks, Striesow will talk about his book “Klassik drastisch”, in which he writes of his love for classical music with co-author Axel Ranisch, a director. The team are planning another dining event on 02.12.2022, so keep your eyes peeled. With the star guests sorted, all that’s left to do is pick your lucky dining companion. Besties to the front…

TOP INTERIOR DESIGNERS GATHER FOR A THREE-DAY EXHIBITION — AD INTERIOR: NEW PERSPECTIVES

TOP INTERIOR DESIGNERS GATHER FOR A THREE-DAY EXHIBITION — AD INTERIOR: NEW PERSPECTIVES

Every month I flip through Architectural Digest in search of interior inspiration and to discover the style and design of tomorrow. This weekend, however, I’ll be finding out in person: at AD Interior: New Perspectives (21–23.10.2022), an exhibition that is welcoming renowned design experts to the Kronprinzenpalais in Mitte. The three-day event will feature 12 design studios including Batek Architekten, Gonzalez Haase AAS, Julia von Werz, Stephanie Thatenhorst and Studio Oink. David Kosock and Joern Scheipers from Vaust Studio, for instance, draw on brutalism and play with familiar materials like stone, wood and – of course – concrete. Ester Bruzkus Architekten, meanwhile, are inspired by the idea of “boxes inside boxes” and have a soft spot for color. Their work is just one example of the new German perspectives on interiors, product design and architecture that go way beyond the usual Bauhaus, Bella Italia and Parisian Chic.
