AFRICAN BOOK FESTIVAL: THREE DAYS OF READINGS, TALKS AND PERFORMANCES — RECOMMENDED BY LARA SIELMANN

AFRICAN BOOK FESTIVAL: THREE DAYS OF READINGS, TALKS AND PERFORMANCES — RECOMMENDED BY LARA SIELMANN

This weekend, culture enthusiasts in Berlin are in for an exceptional literary treat: the African Book Festival, which presents contemporary literature from the continent of Africa and the diaspora and is returning for its fourth year. Under the direction of South African writer, filmmaker and photographer Lidudumalingani, Alte Münze will open its doors this weekend (26-28.08.2022) for insights into literary worlds that hardly get any attention (few books by African authors get translated). This year’s motto is “Yesterday. Today. Tomorrow.”, which highlights the intergenerational connections between the writers.

The wide-ranging program features renowned writers such as Ghanaian author Margaret Busby, British-Congolese author J J Bola, and Afro-German author Olivia Wenzel. In addition to readings, there will be panels, live music and comedy events. The team behind the festival is also launching a publishing house for African and Afro-diasporic contemporary literature just in time for the opening, including at least four titles by authors who will also be appearing at the festival. Plenty of good reasons to drop by Alte Münze this weekend, then.

ELECTRIC MIMOSA — EXQUISITE GOURMET BRUNCH AND SPREESIDE PARTY AT FLUXBAU

ELECTRIC MIMOSA — EXQUISITE GOURMET BRUNCH AND SPREESIDE PARTY AT FLUXBAU

Brunch and partying at the same time? This might just be our new favorite weekend activity. This Saturday (27.08.2022) Electric Mimosa is inviting you to a boozy brunch and party on the Spree. Kick-off is at 14h with an exquisite four-course menu by top chef Maximilian Kindel featuring freshly baked bread, trout caviar, braised pasture-raised beef, truffles and a pomegranate granita with white chocolate cream. The drinks are just as luxe, with selected wines and champagnes, refreshing Chandon Garden Spritz, frothy espresso martinis and classic negronis. DJs from Sisyphos, KitKat and SoHo House will be serving electronic sounds during and after brunch, so you can (hopefully) enjoy a sunny dance on Fluxbau’s riverside terrace. Whether you come for brunch or just to dance, you can look forward to music from the likes of Nat SûpriseMiba and Melendez. And if it does rain, you can enjoy the view of the Spree from inside the Fluxbau. Get ready for a party weekend with style included.

CLIMATE CULTURES FESTIVAL — SHOWING ANOTHER SIDE OF ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVISM WITH TALKS, SCREENINGS AND ART

CLIMATE CULTURES FESTIVAL — SHOWING ANOTHER SIDE OF ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVISM WITH TALKS, SCREENINGS AND ART

A record-breaking summer has given us a taste of what the climate crisis could mean for Berlin. But what about the dangers that countries in the global south are facing right now? And how can the rich world learn from these countries? From Rastafarian green solutions in Jamaica to climate justice movements in South Africa, this weekend’s Climate Cultures Festival (26–28.08.2022) is all about getting fresh perspectives on how to combat global heating. The three-day event will include 17 panel discussions, exhibitions and screenings, such as Jamaican filmmaker Esther Figueroa’s 2019 documentary Fly Me to the Moon, which follows the journey of a crucial resource – aluminum – around the world. The festival art exhibition, Echos, covers an entire continent, featuring works from artists in Morocco, Nigeria and Tunisia. Finally, a selection of 10 video works by Russian artists and activists considers the impact of war on climate action. The festival is being held at Alte Münze and is free to attend – another reason to go get inspired by the resilience and hope of climate activism.

A TASTE OF ITALY IN POTSDAM — ARCHITECTURE AND AL FRESCO SUMMER NIGHTS AT THE BELVEDERE ON PFINGSTBERG

A TASTE OF ITALY IN POTSDAM — ARCHITECTURE AND AL FRESCO SUMMER NIGHTS AT THE BELVEDERE ON PFINGSTBERG

You can thank the King for this little piece of Italy. The grand wings and imposing towers of the Belvedere Palace wouldn’t look out of place on a Roman piazza, but owing to Friedrich Wilhelm IV’s “Italian dream” to transport renaissance architecture to his northern kingdom, you’ll find this slice of grandeur just 3 km north of Potsdam city center. Combined with the equally handsome Pomona Temple and Lenné Park, it makes for a hilltop wonder that gives strong dolce vita vibes. A big part of the sweet life is of course food – something you’ll discover at next month’s Italian evening(03.09.2022, 18h), held in the grounds of this Prussian-commissioned Palazzo. While enjoying a late summer evening you can sample Italian antipasti, selected wines and diverse music from singer and actor Adriano Mottola.

You can turn things into an all-day affair by spending some time strolling around the grounds of the palace site before paying the Temple of Pomona a visit where, starting 27.08, you can see an exhibition from artist Georg Baselitz featuring nine new works. Also worth a look is the permanent exhibition in the palace itself where you can discover the site’s 150-year history. And finally, Pfingstberg’s 76m elevation means it has one more trick up its sleeve: a breathtaking view that stretches from the surrounding gardens across the green expanses of Brandenberg right through to Potsdamer Platz.

THE BEST OF THE OLD AND THE NEWEST OF THE NEW — ANDREAS MURKUDIS CELEBRATES 20 YEARS

THE BEST OF THE OLD AND THE NEWEST OF THE NEW — ANDREAS MURKUDIS CELEBRATES 20 YEARS

It’s Andreas Murkudis’s birthday – or rather that of his universe. Murkudis opened his first shop, back then still in Mitte, 20 years ago (yes, it really has been two decades!). For almost as long, he has been at the forefront of Berlin’s fashion and art scene and his name has become synonymous with quality and international flair – something hard to find in the city even today. There are three shops on Potsdamer Straße, each named after its house number: 77, 81 and 98. The most famous – Store 81 – is located in the backyard of the Mercator Höfe, surrounded by galleries in the rooms of the former Tagesspiegel print press. This space and two other premises in the immediate vicinity are to host various events over the next few days to mark the anniversary of a name known for design, fashion and art.

Saturday (20.08.2022) sees a presentation of the world’s largest Helmut Lang vintage collection courtesy of Endyma, a fashion archive founded by collector Michael Kardamakis. The fit is perfect, and not just because of the late 90s aesthetic: like Murkudis, Lang’s work has always crossed boundaries as with his acclaimed collaboration with artist Jenny Holzer who, among other things, designed Lang’s stores. Incidentally: the exhibits aren’t just for looking at – they’re also for sale. Saturday is also the launch of the latest cooperation between Raf Simons and Kvadrat in the Store 77 furniture shop, as well as a new edition of the exhibition Das Haus with objects from designer duo e15. Events continue during Berlin Art Week (14–18.09), World Coastal Cleanup Day together with the Feuerle CollectionValerie Objects and others.
