STREET FOOD FRIDAYS — BITE CLUB RETURNS TO GLEISDREIECK PARK

STREET FOOD FRIDAYS — BITE CLUB RETURNS TO GLEISDREIECK PARK

Start saving your appetite: Bite Club is back! After a Covid-induced break, the fabled food event is returning tomorrow (18.06.2021) with eight stalls of round-the-world cuisine from some of Berlin gastro’s leading lights. The rendezvous point for the Friday feast is the B-Part co-working space which overlooks the Kreuzberg corner of Gleisdreieck park, meaning you are (almost) guaranteed a good sunset. The lip-licking lineup includes Caribbean-hot jerk chicken from Vybz, fully-packed pittas from The Shawarma Mamma and fresh and fiery bibimbap from Son Kitchen. Also serving up the spice is another mother – Mama Shabz – whose crispy pakoras and sharp Koftas have made us keen fans of Pakistani cuisine. There’s liquid indulgence too, with classy cocktails from B-Part’s resident cafe Jules and cool beers courtesy of Brlo. Should you still have space after that, you can finish up with one of Woop Woop’s creamy-fresh nitro gas ice creams. More vendors are being added in the coming weeks, including Ma-Makan with their Malay dishes and matcha shaved ice from Tenzan Lab. Time to block your calendar: this summer’s Friday hangout is sorted.

TIME FOR THE TERRACE — OUR TIPS FOR OUTDOOR DINING & DRINKS THIS WEEKEND

TIME FOR THE TERRACE — OUR TIPS FOR OUTDOOR DINING & DRINKS THIS WEEKEND

We’ve all been missing our favorite gastronomy venues during the past year of ever-changing lockdowns. Last weekend we were welcomed back with palpable excitement to terraces across the city. And while it would be impossible to list all the places we’re looking forward to dining at again, here are a few tips for where to start, from breakfast in a cemetery courtyard to regional Thai lunch and cocktails in a former brewery. To start the day, 21 gramm in Neukölln is serving breakfast and brunch in their brick courtyard, plus cocktails and drinks should you decide to lengthen your brunch into the evening. For a full-day affair, Café am Neuen See may also interest you with their cafe, beer garden and restaurant. Their boat hire is also open if you fancy a scenic post-lunch cruise around Tiergarten. Over to Prenzlauer Berg and Kink Bar and Restaurant, which opened in a former brewery in June 2020. The terrace is back, and you can expect dishes such as langoustine with fermented celery, ruppiner lamb saddle with goat cheese moussaka and horseradish sorbet with yogurt and passionfruit for a sweet finish.

Shishi meanwhile brings Israeli-Mediterranean inspired dishes to the bold, blue tables of its Kreuzberg courtyard, with a wine menu of 100% natural wines. Also available are jars of homemade jams, dukkah and sauces to take home to keep the flavors lasting. Meanwhile, Ernst’s little brother Julius is taking advance reservations for their sun-soaked tables in Wedding, with vegetables front and center of their tasting and carte blanche menus. The menu at Lok6 is the epitome of summer with its bright flavors, and the terrace on the northernmost side of Gleisdreieck means a park stroll is easily accessible after you’ve tried a few of their whisky sours. In Friedrichshain, Khwan serves up regional Thai dishes and wood-fired barbecue to tables on the open patio. Expect punchy flavors such as the Som Tam papaya salad, Pla Tod Isaan fish with fresh herbs, and BBQ chicken with spicy tamarind sauce. Finally, Café Benjamine (formerly Cafe K) is especially great for a day trip with its terrace in the sculpture garden of the Georg Kolbe Museum – ideal for a digestive stroll around the exhibition or the greenery of Grunewald…

Current regulations (27.05.2021) require restaurant diners to have a negative Covid-19 test no more than 24 hours old or proof of full vaccination or previous infection. A maximum of five people from two households can dine together. Be sure to check each place’s requirements.

GOURMET TIME AT HOME — ENJOY SOME OF BERLIN’S FINEST FOOD WITH WOLT DELIVERY

GOURMET TIME AT HOME — ENJOY SOME OF BERLIN’S FINEST FOOD WITH WOLT DELIVERY

As we wait for Berlin’s restaurants to reopen, why not do the next best thing and get dinner delivered to your door? To help you pick from the endless options, we’ve selected five takeaways perfect for spring balcony lunches and weekend suppers at home. Delivery comes courtesy of the blue riders from Wolt, who have been zipping up and down Berlin’s streets since 2020. The Helsinki-based startup lets you order from a huge range of restaurants with just a few taps on your smartphone, and delivery is currently contactless to keep everyone safe. First up: for pizza that doesn’t play by the rules, Schöneberg’s Sironi is the Italian offshoot of the Kreuzberg bakery whose perfectly-baked pizzas come in spelt as well as traditional wheat flour varieties. Over in Prenzlauer Berg, summer has arrived – at least at Tribeca, where the team have already started scooping their Manhattan-inspired vegan ice cream (must-try: the Pistachio Lucuma). Prenzlauer Berg is also home to Fräulein Kimchi – AKA Lauren Lee – who serves up a range of Korean-American goodies from bibimbap bowls and quesadillas to her signature kimchi jars. For a bibimbap taste test, the two Mercosy restaurants in Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain also offer the classic Korean rice dish, including a nutritious sea asparagus and tofu version. Finally, some comfort food par excellence: the indulgent Swedish meatballs from Möllers Köttbullar in Kreuzberg, who have both vegan and traditional beef varieties with either fries or mashed potato on the side. You can order all this using the Wolt app, which since March 2021 serves an even bigger area including Charlottenburg, Wedding and Moabit. Enjoy!

FISH KLUB: FRESHLY CAUGHT FRENCH SEAFOOD SPECIALITIES —PICK UP READY-TO-EAT DISHES OR ORDER ONLINE TO COOK AT HOME

FISH KLUB: FRESHLY CAUGHT FRENCH SEAFOOD SPECIALITIES —PICK UP READY-TO-EAT DISHES OR ORDER ONLINE TO COOK AT HOME

Fresh fish is often hard to come by in landlocked Berlin, but that’s something seafood vendor Fish Klub is on a mission to change. Now with two outlets in Kreuzberg and Charlottenburg, the project began at Markthalle Neun in October 2019, serving up fresh produce that prioritizes sustainability and traceability. The diverse catch is all sourced from France, with much of the supply coming from Bretagne and Vendée on the French Atlantic coast. Behind the operation is Parisian-born Margaux Friocourt, who lived in nine different countries before settling in Berlin in 2016 to import oysters from the renowned area of Marennes-Oléron. The oysters are a favorite amongst restaurateurs and foodies across town, but the range also includes the likes of white, sweet zebra sea bream, cuckoo wrasse (great for soups and stews), royal sea bream plus classic salmon, hake and pollock.

These delicacies can now be picked up out west at the Fish Klub and Wine stand that opened in January 2021 at the Wilma market hall in Charlottenburg. The outlet is set up as a bar and besides fresh fish also offers beautifully presented ready-to-eat dishes and matching natural and biodynamic wines. Highlights include signature Japanese-style “tataki” tuna, mackerel sandwiches on handmade brioche buns and a range of homemade sauces. Whether you’re east or west, Fish Klub is a go-to purveyor of quality catches – and not just on a Friday!

THE GOOD TASTE — FINE FOOD AND DRINK FROM THE VIRTUAL PANTRY DELIVERED TO YOUR DOOR

THE GOOD TASTE — FINE FOOD AND DRINK FROM THE VIRTUAL PANTRY DELIVERED TO YOUR DOOR

In normal times, restaurateur Jonathan Kartenberg is responsible for two kitchens: Irma la Douce on Potsdamer Straße and the stylish Neukölln Eins44. But with restaurants closed, the 28-year-old has used the break to set up The Good Taste, a “virtual pantry” delivering products from select Berlin fine-dining restaurants and regional producers. The selection is impressive: there’s the brilliantly intense bouillabaisse stew from Irma La Douce which immediately transports you to the harbor promenade of Marseille. Or, for more tropical tastes, there’s the mango-coconut jam from Bob & Thoms. Other specialties include preserved golden beetroot from Charlottenburg restaurant Lubitsch and a versatile vegetable salt from the brewers at Brlo. Meanwhile, Eins44 restaurant is offering preserved pears and a kale gremolata, while for drinks the team at gastro venue The Noname have created a ready-to-enjoy dirty martini. Over the coming weeks even more treats from the leading lights of Berlin’s restaurant scene will be added. We can’t wait!

Valentine’s Day special: choose from one of three multi-course meals for you and your favorite person, with drinks courtesy of the Bonvivant drinks box that includes the Valentine’s Spritz – a mixture of grapefruit, orange, Sekt, Chartreuse and St. Germain. Order by 20h tonight (11.02).
